nockgeneer reacted to Troels Pleimert in Space Quest 7?I think that may have had more to do with his bitterness at how Sierra folded rather than anything to do with Space Quest. If you talk to him about just Roger Wilco and the plots of the Space Quest games, he gets very excited and starts talking at length about what he had planned that never came out. But if you talk Sierra and its politics, particularly towards the mid-to-late 90's, the stories turn less rosy. ;)
That said, Scott seems genuinely at peace with it now - despite a few outbursts to the contrary in Hangouts, but that's just him having a laugh - and a lot of sour blood from the past has been sweetened. Ken and Roberta coming out to support them was, he said, particularly heartwarming.

nockgeneer reacted to Capn_Ascii in What is art?"Art" is somebody's brain vomiting its ideas out into the physical world, and then someone else's brain lapping up that vomit like a hungry dog and then misinterpreting it, thus completely ruining the whole point.
Art, my friends, is communication. Sweet, disgusting communication. ;)
This door sucks. The technical skill of the artist leaves much to be desired, the thematic symbolism is confusing and self-contradictory, and it's not blue enough.

I hate that bear. He keeps breaking into my study and drawing cartoon mustaches on all of my paintings. Even the ones that aren't portraits.

nockgeneer reacted to mhaley in Ken Allen Interviewed at 1UPI've pledged $50 so far. Looking at the reward tiers, I'm halfway tempted to upgrade to $125 for the vinyl edition, but I've already donated so much to SpaceVenture. I wish Ken all the best, though. In my opinion, he was the greatest composer to ever grace Sierra On-Line.
A friend of mine thought that I gave $2.50 to SpaceVenture when I first told him about it. Nope, that decimal point's two places to the right.

I've been lurking for a long time, popping in and out of the community. When I have been around, I've mostly been writing articles about Space Quest and SpaceVenture (and throwing money at SpaceVenture). Yesterday, I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Ken Allen about Space Quest IV, his new album and SpaceVenture. It was a real treat. He shared some stories about SQ4 that I had never heard before (or just didn't remember).
For anyone interested in that interview, it can be found here: http://www.1up.com/d...try?bId=9117876 (be sure to comment or upvote for more front page attention)
EDIT: With 1UP's pending closure, I cannot guarantee that the above link will last, so you may also find the interview on my personal blog: http://thegrigpost.blogspot.com/2013/02/interview-with-ken-allen.html

nockgeneer got a reaction from penguinfan in What is art?My thoughts exactly; though in my case I was/might still be good at it. My idea is more: Art is the production of profound elegance. This means what one persons deems art can be different from another (seen in practice) and that anything can be turned into art if the crafter is willing to become an artisan (whether that be an arrangement of flowers or a particularly beautifully laid-out circuit board).

nockgeneer got a reaction from Frede in Style of the new game...Oh man, talk about manly tears. They go, "Here, have a nice story about childhood friends that grow up and get married. Sweet story, right? They're such a cute couple. Now here's a knife to stab yourself in the heart with. Are you done yet? Make sure you get it reallly deep and twist a couple of times. Great. Now we can start with the rest of the movie."

nockgeneer reacted to Capn_Ascii in Space Quest 7?I have to admit, I feel something similar on the subject. A part of me doesn't really *want* a new official SQ game. Aside from all the license and legal issues, the fact of the matter is that Space Quest has been undead-and-gone for 16-ish years now. Do we really *want* it to be revived by a corporate team or otherwise done by someone treating it more as a commercial product than a labor of love? We all know how bad the original Sierra/made SQ7 would have been...do we really have any reason to think it would turn out any better now?
Another question: do the Two Guys even really *want* to make another SQ game? Sure, they'd know what they're doing (obviously), and they'd have an established fanbase to pander to - but isn't that what Spaceventure is doing already? Spaceventure is, for all intents and purposes, a spiritual sequel to Space Quest - the same style and themes, the same sense of humor. It's everything that a good Space Quest sequel would be, except with the added benefit of being an original universe in and of itself. This gives the Guys the freedom to do whatever they want to with it, without being constrained (and possibly becoming burnt-out on) their older series - which IMHO means a better chance for fresher, higher-quality creations.
Personally, I'm inclined to treat Spaceventure (and potential sequels) as 'the new Space Quest'. Think of it as Space Quest: The Next Generation - same creators, same theme (sarcastic sci-fi comedy), same style, but with new characters, places, and concepts to explore. With fangames to take up the torch of the original SQ series, I'd be perfectly happy letting the Guys focus on their new baby - and letting the fans take Spaceventure into the fold *alongside* SQ and treating them as two extensions of the same awesome family1. The more, the merrier. :D
1) Commence the endless Kirk-vs-Picard-style "Roger vs. Ace" debates.

nockgeneer reacted to Troels Pleimert in Style of the new game...If I may take a step back for a moment, I think we can all sleep safe knowing that SpaceVenture won't be a cartoon adventure, at least not in the Tex Avery sense.
It may borrow elements from that style, just as it borrows elements from graphic novels and the Alien movies. I think the predominant influence we've seen from the concept art thus far has been the modern style of computer animation like Pixar and such, but with a grungier tone. I, for one, have no problem with that. Hell, I loved Wall-E. ;)

nockgeneer reacted to Capn_Ascii in Happy Broomcloset Day!Feeling old yet? ;)
So what you're saying is...you looked out into the Internet, saw a Virtual Broomcloset-shaped hole, and felt compelled to fill it. :D
Seventeen years...my god, has it been that long? Yes...yes it has. I vividly remember my first brush with the 'Closet - I had purchased the then-recently-released SQ6 sometime around '96 or '97, and had spent six months stuck on the endodroid puzzle because I didn't know you could bend one of the pipes in the background (grr!). After leaving the game for so long and the coming back to it determined to beat the damned thing, I realized that, with my family's new computer and this brand-new Internet thing that came with it, I could see if anyone else has posted a solution to the game's puzzles. My search quickly took me to a walkthrough on the Broomcloset, although at the time I didn't appreciate the gravity of the find - I simply took my puzzle solution and went off to beat SQ6 and then laugh at it victoriously. :D
As I got older, and I began to see more and more of the Internet, my love of games gradually evolved into the fanboyness of all things fictional and geeky it is today. I began to properly appreciate fansites at that point, although I lurked at the Broomcloset for years before finally getting a proper login on the message boards and starting to poke my head into topics. I remember that part quite well - late September, 2001 was when I made my first post. Unfortunately, the only reason I remember that is because it was only a week or so after the 9/11 attack, which was a hot topic when I made my debut...
In case you're wondering, I was just as long-winded back then as I am now. Really, though, the only reason I talk to much is because I love discussing the subject at hand. ;)
Like a lot of fans, after several years I began to drift away from the SQ fandom due to the utter lack of new material to work with. I never really *stopped* loving SQ, mind you - I just switched to more of a private worship instead of the public services we used to hold. :P SQ was like the first girlfriend you ever dated, who's no longer around but you still cherish her memory just the same. I stopped keeping tabs on SQ happenings (mostly because I assumed there *weren't* any) and focused on other things.
Then a bunch of guys drop three completed SQ fangames on me from out of freakin' nowhere. Admittedly, part of the shock was because I hadn't been keeping up with SQ news at all, but the bigger shock is that games of such magnitude - *especially* VSB and Incinerations - got completed *at all*. Back in the glory days of the fandom, it was something of a running gag that new SQ games cropped up at a dime a dozen, and were cancelled just as quickly - the idea that these design teams kept chugging along during the Silent Years without stop and with hardly any fandom left to support them still blows my mind.

nockgeneer reacted to Troels Pleimert in The Nostalgia TimestreamHi, guys. Not much out of me lately, huh? Well, here's something brand new.
Google+ opened up the possibility to build "communities." Since the original intention behind the 2GFA Google+ page (http://gplus.to/rogerwilco) was to just post nostalgic screenshots from the Space Quest past and wax romantically about them, I thought I'd graciously give the rest of the world the chance to do likewise. Especially since the focus of the Google+ page has moved on from nostalgia to more current topics (cough-SpaceVenture!-cough).
Enough smarm already. Here's the nostalgia channel for all you "Plussers" out there. (God, I hope they come up with a better name for G+ users soon.)

nockgeneer got a reaction from Troels Pleimert in Ace Hardway ... what a guyHe also seems to have a lot of luck going for him—way above average having somehow managed to not be eaten, melted, blown up, shot, frazzled, sliced, diced, clawed to death, squered, roasted, blown off into space, left for an eternity to slumber, dehydrated, strung up, run over, skated over, left in an alternate dimension, shaved, pelted to death, deleted, drowned, choked, dematerialized, digested, depressurized, mutated, impregnated by an alien kisser, left to rot in prison, re-formed, turned inside-out, washed, or to simply even fall off a precipice over the course of his many adventures—while still being someone no one would miss. Maybe she hoped those qualities would stay with the body.
