nockgeneer reacted to Troels Pleimert in Roger Wilco as an idiotI love your animal analogy. I just disagree with it applying to Roger. :)
Roger never struck me as stubborn or particularly dogged. He struck me as someone who is thrust into a situation he has no business being in, and has no real interest in, either -- except for his desire to somehow get out the other end unscathed and get back to whatever it was he was doing (in this case, sleeping in a closet).
Roger's only tenacious because he has to be in order to survive. He's the best kind of lazy: the kind that's so committed to being lazy, they'll go to often ingenious lengths to remain lazy. :)
But I think it's safe to say we're getting into personal interpretation territory here, though. ;)

SO COOL!! Now it needs to happen .. just so I can say .. in the smallest way possible I helped out and was involved.

You know, I was thinking about this HTML5 thing the other day. It reminds me a bit about the late 80s/early 90s with Sierra.
What made Sierra's games great (apart from the actual quality of the stories, the graphics, the gameplay, etc.) was that they were pushing the boundaries of the systems they coded. The graphics they managed to get out of SQ1 and SQ2 were truly remarkable given the quality of monitors and the processing power of the machines at that time.
People say that HTML5 is limiting, cannot do this, cannot do that. But I wonder whether people have a) lost that pioneering spirit and B) forgotten the point of coding.
In the late 90s we, for the first time, had hardware that outpaced software. Rather than trying to tidy things up and make it efficient on machines, coders just got something that "worked" and slapped it into the games. No need to save space when you're writing 30MB games on a disk that holds 700MB. No need to optimise code when it will run on a 500MHz machine and a large section of the target audience has 1.2GHz processors. No need to optimise memory usage if the game is using 500MB of RAM when most machines hold 2GB.
Games companies had to make games quickly and get them to market without really sitting down and making the machine do something beyond the ordinary. Current games makers aren't constrained by their hardware (at least not to the same extent) and the limits of games really are the imaginations of the conglomerates which fund them.
I have no doubt that with a pioneering spirit (which we know the games makers of the 80s had), they can do some wonderful things with HTML5, pushing it places even the designers didn't know it could go to. Assuming, of course, that they use it.

nockgeneer got a reaction from penguinfan in SpaceVenture Haiku, Limericks, Ballads, and other poetryThe Andromeda Triangle sounds a tad tough
But the Andromedan people had had enough
They punched in the numbers, and made a new goal
To crunch the ol’ triangle under their sole
They powered the quark drives and sped off to purge
The world of the triangle’s terrible dirge
It was that bad place where good things went away
Now it's the mem’ry they pushed back that day

nockgeneer reacted to Frede in Reminder: Second Superfan Hangout -- today! That was fun. Somewhat sillier than last time, though Peter's AGI Tetris and very potent remarks on adventure games made sure we weren't just having a four-hour laugh.
I do feel I should state that my remarks on the reception of the SQ2VGA remake should be taken with a grain of salt. I love the game dearly. I guess, in my somewhat... inebriated state, I was trying to convey what it felt like, having worked ten years on a sequel, suddenly seeing people go for the 1991-approach. I do have a bit of a character flaw in the fact that I'm very rarely serious in situations like this, and that I like retorting to ironic vitriol. I'm sorry if my attempt to tell the story in an off-kilter way offended anyone. My closing remarks on SQ2VGA being a great remake were very sincere, however.
And hey, at least, the VSB intro was dissed way more often ;)

nockgeneer got a reaction from penguinfan in SpaceVenture Haiku, Limericks, Ballads, and other poetryOkay, time for another song. I'll see what I can do about singing/chords (not much exp. there) but as it is you can sing it to The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals.
...Gilligans Island works too... and Amazing Grace for that matter. It's a draft that I might polish up later but hopefully it's usable for now.
The Ballad of Andromeda:
The galaxy Andromeda:
A place of fame of lore.
From there two guys with porcine snouts
Came seeking fame once more.
And though they could not stop for breath,
Space Pope—he helped them cope,
While fighting up to the top of this
Oh so slippery slope.
“How can we get this Venture made?”
So came the baleful cry!
“We need some way to kick-start things.”
“I know! Let's eat some pie!”
With sugar needs well satisfied,
They starting making plans.
Things started clicking into place,
And there they were, the fans.
Now problems came, they were not few,
How would they deal with those.
Banding together's the only way
To end such foul repose.
Videos, adventure games,
Art, comics, beer and drink.
An Ace was rooted from the sleeve
To pull back from the brink.
The galaxy Andromeda:
A place of fame of lore.
From there two guys with porcine snouts
Came finding fame once more.
This tale we tell while we await
Many more phenomena
From the snout-nosed ones we all know as:
Two Guys from Andromeda
Two Guys from Andromeda

nockgeneer reacted to billybob476 in Fun with the MT-32I poured my nervous energy into getting my hands on a real MT-32. It came in the mail last week and I spent part of the weekend getting it hooked up and running via DOSBox/Cakewalk. I've wanted one forever! This is probably the coolest thing I've messed with in a long time. Sooo much fun! I'm spending quite a bit of time over at Quest Studios :)
I'm sure the prototype will be great, and great things take time.

nockgeneer reacted to s_d in TGFA Kickstarter Fan Art ProjectFolks; my wife & I have been thinking about this for about three weeks now, but backer Maya commented, in the aftermath of funding, that we ought to put together a celebratory fan art collage. I agree, at least to celebrate the difficult journey that project had in getting funded, if for no other reason (like a tribute or something).
I have no idea how or in what way it will come together, but I made this topic to spark discussion. This will be fun, I think!
So... SpaceVenture Kickstarter community... what do you think?
Should we do something like this?
What form should it take? Physical, digital, etc? Video? Something else?

Ode To 218K
-----------------
The Spaceventure got underway
And stalled around 218K
But you increased pledging power
While I was in the shower
And funded this bastard TODAY!
There are also haiku and my terrible limerick (which had one malformed non-rhyming stanza). If anyone else has, knows-of/remembers, or wants to author some more, that would be awesome, too. These could be read aloud to be dubbed over imagery by a KS backer with a golden voice (as yet to be found)... I (or Mrs. S.D.) could probably do it reasonably well. If we have trained voice actors amongst our KS backers, that would be much better.
Games:
PledgeQuest & The Mysterious Cartridge: http://www.spaceques...e-spaceventure/ Music: So, I'm not sure here... there is lots of music from before the Kickstarter associated with the fan games. However, as far as fan music authored for the KS project, I only know of the as-yet-forthcoming "Ballad to 218K" that Ohverture is composing right now.

nockgeneer got a reaction from penguinfan in SpaceVenture Haiku, Limericks, Ballads, and other poetryOkay, guess I too should contribute:
The attempt of the century: reunite
Two guys from Andromeda—you heard that right.
Their wounds all a'healed,
Their minds so congealed,
They made known their most perilous plight.
A campaign to raise oh some money, yes please.
Then terrible gaming they'll bring to it's knees.
With, yes, some bumbling,
And also stumbling,
They'll our cry for adventure appease.
As the pledges progressed, our blood it did boil,
As the makers and fans in tandem did toil
To scale that big wall
Of trolls, mighty tall,
That caused all the fine pledges to roil.
Cluck Y'Egger do please, come and lighten our load!
We cannot yet see the sweet end of the road.
We need more fan games!
Go spark some new flames!
And make the comments section explode.
But conquer we did! All the ones who entailed
to blast our Ace into space as one unveiled.
The man so true,
And rooter too,
They give cry that in might we prevailed!

nockgeneer reacted to s_d in Anyone just the tiniest bit restless?Chris, I'd settle for a podcast or video, or another commissioned comic, honestly (I really loved those, actually). I'd actually be really happy to see another commissioned comic if you can swing it, and if it doesn't hurt the budget...
At least to tide me over until LCA5 :)
-
nockgeneer reacted to Jared in Anyone just the tiniest bit restless?Waiting for the next Living Concept Art, that is. Mark's tweeted about the cool new animations, Scott's said that they're working on it and it's coming soon.... I dunno, I was expecting it to be out by now. I'm half antsy because I want to play it (of course) but half because I think it would seriously help any PayPal donations and get us some of those sweet stretch goals.
At the same time I realise the last few days of the campaign were completely nuts so it makes sense for it to be late and I don't want them to rush it if it isn't what they want to release... GAH! YOU ARE TEARIN' ME APART MARK AN SCOTT!
Actually, I think it's the whole campaign has got me over excited. I'm so nostalgic over Space Quest. Every KS that came along I was thinking "Oh, yeah, it's okay. But wouldn't it be awesome if there was a SPACE QUEST Kickstarter?" I literally haven't been this excited over anything since Christmases when I was ten and under. It's MADNESS.
Anyway, I am reeeeally looking forward to LCA5. Erm, which I guess isn't a big revelation...

nockgeneer reacted to Ohverture in The Ballad of 218KI....am going to bed. I hashed this out in the shower, and at work, probably subject to change, but here it is for now. All comments welcome.
The ballad of 218K -
Dedicated to those who never gave up, and everyone else besides.
(Think "The Times they are a Changin" by Bob Dylan, mixed with
"Scarborough Fair" - the Simon and Garfunkel version) With a dash of the Space Quest 1 theme thrown in for relief. :) 218K is pronounced two-one-eight-K)
COME! Gather around and I’ll tell you a tale
Of brave Women and Men who all Pledged to prevail
Over fantastic odds, and the trolls in their way,
As they reached the great slowdown of 218K
Space Pope was assembling an army to fear
Yes the Two Guys would come, but they were not yet near.
The Andromedan cavalry, riding our way
In the deafening silence of 218K
But the trolls did besiege our poor garrisoned mound
Well, the total went up, and the total went down
Oh they toyed with emotions and got in our way,
In that terrible struggle of 218K
Yes, we fought and we bickered, we knew it was bleak
Seemed we wouldn’t reach 500K in two weeks.
There would be no Space Venture, and nothing to play
If we just couldn’t win against 218K
But, in that darkest hour, hearts heavy with dread,
Our adventure games future, it hung by a thread..
Out of sheer desperation, with no more to say
We clawed out of the trenches of 218K
Now if we stood a chance, heck, we just couldn’t tell
With the cone on our side, though it wasn’t, as well?
Oh the Trends, and the Triangle fought us that day
As we clashed, worn and weary, with 218K
All adventurers rallied to put out the word
On the forums, and tweeted (though not like a bird)
And then, ever so slowly we pulled from the fray
And we gained some momentum through 218K
So! With 42 bullets and 5 guns apiece,
The Xenon Special Forces, they led our release
With the power of Polycheese, and Douglas A,
Slowly scaled the great mountain of 218K
*tempo slows*
As we drew near the crest, there was hope in the air
For we knew it would all be downhill beyond there -
With one final full-Nelson, pushed over the line...
…..And we gazed on green pastures of sweet 219
Friends! This story impassioned, is one of renown -
Tell your children to pass-down our tale to their own,
Of the Quests that we went through to be here today,
And to look back in wonder at 218K.
Yes we look back in triumph at 218K.
So. Who’s good with an acoustic guitar? :P

nockgeneer reacted to marsilies in Paypal PledgesLast night, during the wrap party, they mentioned that they're keeping the Paypal option open for a while longer. They listed some stretch goals for the additional funds:
550k - Translations (German, French, and I think Spanish, with Portuguese a possibility)
600k - Cluck Y'egger mini game (launched from the game menu)
625k - Cluck Y'egger animated graphic novel drawn by Mark Crowe.
650k - An additional level in the game featuring a playable female protagonist.
700k - EGA graphics mode
They didn't mention a specific deadline for paypal pledges or the stretch goals. Hoewver, a number of these can be added pretty late into the development, so I wouldn't expect them to cut Paypal funding until they need to lock down the game and finish it for release.
For Paypal pledges, now that the Kickstarter is over, those pledging will not receive any Kickstarter exclusive items like the Buckazoids. I think those paypal pledges that came in before the Kickstarter ended should get them though.
In addition, they're planning to open up a store for selling SpaceVenture merchandise. They previewed a Cluck Y'egger pilot wings pin that will be available. They also talked about the possibility of another Buckazoid coin with a different design from the Kickstarter exclusive. Purchases from the store will go towards the stretch goals.
Keep in mind that this is mostly from memory of what was said, and the Two Guys were pretty blitzed last night as well. So all this is subject to corrections or changes when they post the official announcements.
