BlockMaster reacted to MusicallyInspired in SQ1 VGA: Stop the HateIf you disagree then you're stupid. I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you...

BlockMaster reacted to suejak in SQ1 VGA: Stop the HateTime to settle this question once and for all: Which SQ1 version is the best, and why?
Straight-up, I prefer VGA. I love the AGI engine and I love parsers. I even made an AGI game when I was 12: Monkey Man and the Quest to Kick Some Balls, set in the Ulence Flats bar and starring characters both new and familiar to Space Quest fans.
Yet I undeniably prefer the VGA remake. It is the one I remember admiring the box art for in the store. It's the one whose 60s film-style trailer sucked me on an old demo disc. It has personality and it looks amazing. The Deltaur is a rad-looking giant mantis that locks on predatorily to the Arcadia. The interior of the Deltaur is beautiful and suspenseful. The bar has seriously rockin ZZ Top music, and you can even talk to the patrons. You don't even have to savescum to rake in the cash at the slot machine. All the portraits give the characters new personality. Running from the spider droid is way more fun with a mouse than it is with arrow keys. Killing the orat looks awesome, whether you do it with the spider droid or the bottle of dehydrated water, because the orat looks so awesome, and the little orat part that comes out looks awesome, and everything is awesome. I'm sure there are hundreds more great things about the VGA version, but there are too many so I forgot.
People say the AGI parsers offers more freedom, and they're probably right. But it also offers more Ugly, and a lot more Sorry, I don't know what a Plunger On The Wall is.

BlockMaster got a reaction from Dat Engineer in Blue frogs in the Time Pod NEW : Now (maybe) solved!I think I'm the closest that I could get to solve the mystery of the Blue Frogs line. I looked at all the comments, searched in the game and script of both the CD version and the beta (I can't look in the files of my copy of the original version, since it's a french copy, and it is on my Windows 98 that can't connect to internet, and that doesn't support USBs.), and I came up with this thoughts :
First, I looked in the files of Space Quest IV beta, and that line, and the frog::doVerb script are not there, so it is not something from the time that Space Quest IV had a text parser, since the beta is from the time where they already changed to point-and-click, so it was added sometime between the beta and the release.
Second : It's probably a reference to Hero's Quest/ Quest For Glory II "suck blue frog" cheat
Third : I'm almost sure it's also a parody on the song "Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy", by John Denver.
Fourth : I found another line in the text files of the time pod room, just after the Blue Frogs line, that isn't there in the game : Where To? I looked in the frog::doVerb script, and that line is there in the script :
frog::doVerb: link $1 pushi $1a ; 26, back lofsa string_0883 ; "Where To?" push pushi $1b ; 27, mode push1 pushi $4d ; 77, 'M', title lofsa string_088d ; "Time-O-Matic" push pushi $6d ; 109, 'm', new pushi $4e ; 78, 'N', button lofsa string_089a ; "Estros" push pushi $6 ; nsTop pushi $6d ; 109, 'm', new pushi $4e ; 78, 'N', button lofsa string_08a1 ; "Mall" push pushi $c ; 12, lsBottom pushi $6d ; 109, 'm', new pushi $4e ; 78, 'N', button lofsa string_08a6 ; "Xenon" push pushi $12 ; 18, brBottom pushi $6d ; 109, 'm', new pushi $4e ; 78, 'N', button lofsa string_08ac ; "Ulence" push pushi $18 ; 24, elements pushi $6d ; 109, 'm', new pushi $4e ; 78, 'N', button lofsa string_08b3 ; "Ortega" push push0 pushi $6d ; 109, 'm', new calle export816_1, $34 sal local[$2] lsg global[$80] ldi $2 lt? bnt code_14f8 lsl local[$2] ldi $6 ; nsTop eq? bnt code_14f8 push2 pushi $213 ; 531, talkWidth push0 calle export816_1, $4 jmp code_1553 That makes me think that it is the script for a time pod warp menu, where you can press a button to go somewhere instead of having to type the code manually. I'm 87.35% sure that it is not accessible in-game, because that script calls two animations for the buttons and text : view 77 and view 78, and these views are not in the files. I think originally, the Blue Frogs line was triggered with either the Smell or Taste icons, and that's how the Two Guys made it inaccessible, since you can't use these icons in the Time Pod. (edit: you can't use those icons in the Time pod in the beta either, so the Smell and Taste icons have nothing to do with the Blue Frog line.) At a certain point, you could, though; some lines in that room look like they were triggered by smelling or tasting : Placing your proboscus closer to the switch would result in severe quark burns from the unshielded cables. But it might also rid you of those unsightly nose hairs. ,
Licking switches is never a good idea unless your into the kind of buzz that causes you to loose all control of your muscle system. This could results in the lose of control of all bodily functions., Not only does the time pod look like a used tennis shoe, from the inside, it SMELLS like one, too!, So that's the result of my research. Thoughts are always appreciated and I would like to know if I'm wrong in any of this. BlockMaster -
BlockMaster reacted to suejak in Opened spore inventory item in Space Quest II?Something about Gary Owens saying, "It's your spent spore, Roger" seems more like an LSL line...
-
Haha - yeah. While we're at it, let's gte Activision to give us a budget to clean it up and get Gary Owens to record the narrator!
Bt
-
We must make a quick hotfix patch!
-
Huh. Always wondered this. Nice.

BlockMaster reacted to suejak in Opened spore inventory item in Space Quest II?No, this is in the final game. You can get it.
I have it in my inventory in my most recent playthrough. I tried to screenshot it, but whatever. It's easy enough to get.
You can go back and get another spore at any time in the game before you climb down from the log into the cave-maze. This is AFTER you've used the spore on the mean guy with the club -- you can still go back and get another spore.
At the end of the maze sequence, you tumble down to where the little pink (?) men are. If you still have a spore in your inventory, it bursts once you hit the ground.
This incapacitates Roger, and you gotta stare at your screen for a while, or maybe go pee. It will take him a while to wake up again.
When you come back, he'll be awake and he'll have an "empty spore" in his inventory that uses that graphic.

Cool, nice job! I always wanted a time pod figurine sitting on my desk. This, I suppose, is the closest thing.

BlockMaster got a reaction from MusicallyInspired in Space Quest Lego UPDATE : Galaxy GalleriaThanks for the amazing feedback guys!
I made something new! The Space Quest IV time pod in Lego! It was quite difficult to make it minifigure sized, but I'm pretty proud of it. It's already ready to travel through time! You can check it out here : https://www.flickr.com/photos/106016985@N05/14586788353/in/set-72157644860948499, and as always, feedback is greatly appreciated. Stay tuned!

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to let people know about a game that we’ve been working on for the last couple of years. I made a post quite a while ago about it but the project has changed significantly since then. It was a little slow to get off the ground but we’re finally at a point where production is really ramping up. We’re aiming for a December 31st release date for Chapter 1.
Heavily inspired by Sierra & Lucasarts games of old, Exogenesis: Cryospore will be true science-fiction, exploring both the universe and the human condition.
The first Chapter will see us introduced to Kayla, a 22-year-old biogenetics student who is on vacation visiting her father on the Cryospore, an ageing military ship that has been re-purposed for deep space research in the middle of the Vela nebula. One of the ship’s navigation instruments has a calibration problem and her father has asked her to check it out as he’s busy in the lab. I don’t want to ruin the story so I’ll stop there.
This will be a 3rd-person point-and-click adventure game, and ideally we’ll release on PC, Mac, Android and iOS.
Please visit our website for more screenshots -

Ask away with any questions you may have! :)

Great art style! Can't wait to see the characters!
Also, nice "Star Quest 3" poster in the bedroom. :)
-
Oh, crap. I installed this on my phone. You know how hard pixel hunting is on a 5x8 inch screen?

Dear all,
I am pleased to inform you that the unofficial SQ prequel "Decisions of the Elders" has been released yesterday.
Playing Roger's parents it's up to you to save the legend.
Decisions of the Elders is a full length (about 30 rooms) retro game (320x200 EGA graphics, AGI fonts) with challenging puzzles. But don't worry! Even though this game is a tribute to the beloved Sierra adventure games there are no dead ends. And there is a walkthrough available!
If you loved the old Sierra adventures there's a really good chance for you to like this game!
You have heard of this game before? That's because a short part has been pre-released in 2012. Now the game is completely finished!
The game can be found in the games database of AGS (adventure game studio).
You can also download the game directly at: http://www.tonundtext.at/downloads/DOTE.zip
I will also try to attach the ZIP-file to this thread.
Have fun!!!

BlockMaster reacted to Troels Pleimert in Space Quest script searchingBest guess: probably just a background character that reminded the programmers of Clark Kent or something, and they gave him that nickname in the code. Doesn't necesssarily refer to THE Superdude. :)

BlockMaster reacted to JimmyTwoBucks in Regarding the May 16th UpdateGary Owens: "Well guys, that was a tough 72 hours straight of recording, but job done!"
Two guys: "Yep! Oh no, wait... it looks like pcj and Troels just made a ton of changes to the script
while you were in the recording booth. Well, back in you go Gary."
Gary Owens: " :( "

BlockMaster reacted to pcj in Regarding the May 16th UpdateActually, Gary can only record as fast as his fax machine prints out his script. So we're OK there.

BlockMaster got a reaction from Happy Cock Head in Space Quest Movie PosterI think both posters are great, but I don't think one is better than the other. Happy Cock Head, maybe you have experience in this kind of image editing, but that doesn't mean you need to come in this thread, discourage the one who probably put a lot of work in his project and based his price on the amount of effort he had put into it. I know his price seems exagerated for some, but today's generation is used to cheap stuff. The way you responded to this thread and stole the spotlight seems mean for the one who originally created this post only to share his great work, and maybe get money out of it. That's all I have to say. I don't want to choose a side in this what-is-the-best-poster war. I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

BlockMaster reacted to pcj in Space Quest script searchingIf I were a SpaceVenture programmer, I would sprinkle random nonsense throughout the code to keep the fans of 20 years from now amused.
Oh wait...
