suejak reacted to Troels Pleimert in SQ7 ManiaAlso, this would be a fantastic time to break out the awesome-looking sprites that Akril drew, back when we were talking about having a tool chest of graphics for fan games. Now I can't seem to bloody find them! :/

suejak reacted to MusicallyInspired in Back Seat DesignersI never said we were smarter. I said we're more impatient now because current technology caters to that mindset more than it used to. We've always had the same potential we have now, it's just easier not to indulge it.

suejak reacted to JimmyTwoBucks in Is it worth playing...YYYYEEEESSSS, I JUST FINISHED THE ORIGINAL KQ2 AND IT WAS AMAZING!!!!
Ok, maybe "amazing" is exaggerating a little, but I did enjoy it a lot.
This might be due to a combination of things...
--I liked the graphics and the locations and it had more characters and everything seemed
a lot fuller and more colorful and interesting than the first KQ. I really liked the underwater area
(even though most of it wasn't explorable) and the clifftop and how you went to an enchanted area, etc.
--Also I had a better idea after playing the first KQ of what the deal was, like I knew some items were
just treasure, and that if something has a word on it then you can just say that word (thanks to the bowl puzzle).
--Miscellaneous stuff... the couple of adverts for SQ1 and KQ3 in there were great and also there were more
save spaces in this one, which was handy. It was almost like the first KQ was a little test run for this game or an
extended demo for it.
This one also seemed more logical and thought-out with the puzzles, I felt the game was
relatively fair with the puzzles, and so I was less inclined to look anything up (I find in general
that I turn to walkthroughs more readily if a game has screwed me over several times with crazy logic...
I then don't trust the game to be fair to me in future puzzles)
I did have to check a couple of things out, they were sort of more game mechanic things than
puzzle answers though...
--I had read the inscription on the first door (with there being something to do with water), so I took this
as just a hint and I couldn't be arsed to walk aaaaalll the way back to the beach, so I restored a previous
game where I was at the beach already (I had all the same items, so I figured I didn't lose anything by doing this).
That was a mistake, because reading the inscription is what actually triggers the mermaid to appear, so I was
wandering around for ages looking for something that wasn't there.
--I got the first key but then couldn't unlock the door... tried "key in door", "open door", "put key in keyhole" etc. etc.
Turned out it was just "unlock door". Doh.
The rest of it I completed fine, though I had already heard about not crossing the bridge too many times,
so I avoided that pitfall.
I didn't get full points... I assume there is something more complicated to do with the snake, but I just
smashed that dude with the sword because why give me a sword if I'm not going to use it.
Onwards to KQ3!

suejak reacted to Johnathon in Scariest scenes in Sierra gamesNot sure if it's been mentioned yet, but you know that death sequence in SQ5 when you dock to the wrong section of the Goliath, and use the laser cutter, and then, one-by-one, those creepy mutants peer their creepy, creepy little faces into your tight enclosure... oh... SHUDDER...

suejak reacted to JimmyTwoBucks in Is it worth playing...HOOOORAY! I finished KQ1! (with a little help from a walkthrough a few times, haha) I know it's unfair to judge it too harshly as they were inventing the genre by the seat of their pants at the time, so you expect it to be a kind of work-in-progress almost, as they iron out things in later games. I found it kind of fun, but it felt sort of underwhelming in a lot of ways, somehow the puzzles weren't that satisfying. I like that it's a short game in a contained area with not that many puzzles to complete, but some of them are such random mindbenders that I could see being stuck on some parts for years if I hadn't looked them up: --The bowl still seems random to me... I had looked at it and saw "fill" but that only suggested to me that
it needed filling with something at some point, not that you can just say "fill" to fill it. --The bird... ok, it's swooping down, but how would you know that it's going to carry you away unless you spent hours trying every random thing? I didn't know if I was meant to give it something, throw something at it, put something on the rock for it to eat, whether it had something in its mouth I needed, etc. Even when you know roughly what to do, it's not that easy to actually do it, so I could see being stuck on that part for ages. --The gnome... wow. Just wow. I think with some of the puzzles, having to use the exact right words and be standing in the exact right place often makes them even tougher... you think you've tried something and ruled it out, but you just weren't in quite the right place, etc. And then conversely some puzzles were really straightforward - give cheese to a rat, put water on dragon's fire, eat mushroom to get through opening. I was really surprised that some items like the diamonds, egg, walnut did not have specific uses. I was like, "yesss, I have the diamonds, now I get to complete some puzzle somewhere else with them and progress!" Nope, they stayed in my pocket the whole time. The most interesting items in the games were ones you couldn't pick up... "Wow, an axe! And I wonder what this water pump does! Hey there's a bottle of something at the bottom of this well!" Yeah, well tough sh-t, you don't get to pick up any of that stuff. Here, have a carrot. I'm not sure if I would recommend the game to someone else apart from historical value... it was fun while I was going around picking things up and trying to work things out, but it seemed to never find the sweet spot of puzzles between "too obvious" and "brain-melter". Surprisingly though, I actually enjoyed the challenge of climbing the beanstalk. At least I knew what I was meant to be doing. All in all I am glad I played it, just so now I know what it's all about. Anyway... onwards to KQ2! -
suejak got a reaction from JimmyTwoBucks in Is it worth playing...Random thought, but reading your preferences, I think you'll hate King's Quest 3. Many of us did at first. I tried to play KQ3 sooo many times over the years, but the first sequence with the wizard drove me nuts.
But then someone told me to stick with it. Take to heart Josh's comments in the other thread about hiding stuff under the bed and eventually being able to beat the wizard. Also, just wait -- be obedient at first and don't try to rush it. You may have to restart a few times, and it'll seem annoying because the wizard just ambushes you and resets your progress over and over.
Stick with it, though, and try not to let the first few minutes spoil you on the whole game. It's worth playing. No Space Quest, but it's worth it.

suejak got a reaction from JimmyTwoBucks in Is it worth playing...I think KQ7 is the easiest to like. It's very Torin's Passage-y in that it's too "modern" and slick, but it's pretty good.
After that, I think 3 and 4 are worth playing in their original form.
KQ 1 and 2 are of interest for historical value only. KQ 1 SCI is very pretty, and the VGA remakes are worth playing if you enjoy beautiful adventure games.
-
suejak reacted to MusicallyInspired in Is it worth playing...What would have been nice is a "classic" mode for KQ2+ where you could just play the original game. The graphics were all there. It would have taken a bit to program, yeah, but it would have been worthwhile. I love KQ2+, though.

Despite how many people like this game, I found the puzzles in King's Quest III to be rather challenging. First, realizing that the wizard was on a timer, then actually figuring out how to get rid of the wizard....We played that game for years when I was a kid and we could never figure out how to get rid of Manannan. We cast all the spells, and we had the cookie, but the game never told you that you could actually get rid of the wizard, and the idea that you could hide things under the bed and they wouldn't be noticed was also never explicitly mentioned in the game. We literally thought that you had to get everything done while he was away (i.e., explore Llewdor, gather all of the items, cast all of the spells, somehow escape the country, and beat the game before the wizard ever came back), which is impossible to do in 25 minutes (even if you know what you're doing!)
I didn't beat King's Quest III until many years later, and then only by following a walkthrough (the only King's Quest game that we weren't able to complete without using one, although we did have a friend who had beaten the game help us with the moldy cheese wand-powering machine in King's Quest V).
Not necessarily illogical, but the unstable ordinance in Space Quest IV was particularly annoying as well. We never got anywhere in that game (i.e., we never even got off the surface of Xenon) for several years because we thought there was something that you had to do with that in order to escape (going into the sewers never occurred to us). That was another game that I had to use a walkthrough to complete (along with the original Space Quest I, although that was because we never realized that you were supposed to turn ON the translator to understand the alien in the underground section of Kerona...)
The procedures that you MUST follow in Police Quest 1 and Codename: Iceman made them incredibly annoying games. I was thankful that PQ2 was much less focused on the procedures than its predecessor...Then again, I don't consider them necessarily poor puzzle design as I do poor gameplay design.
As mentioned before, the tape-splicing in GK2 was ridiculously absurd, and don't even get me started on some of the Babel fish puzzle in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!!!
Conversely, I started the game Space Quest: Incinerations this weekend, and have really enjoyed the puzzle design of that game. Fantastic job on that game, Chris!!!!! :D
Talk to you later!

suejak reacted to Troels Pleimert in Space Quest Historian podcast - season 2That was a great episode. Got me right in the feels. Jess, Fred and Pope made me laugh, Brandon brought teh rawk and Lucky China dropped some cool perspectives on what was ostensibly the topic. And, really, Gareth deserves a great big man-bear-hug for putting the whole thing together on short notice and being incredibly uncharacteristically sweet about the whole thing.
But we all know it's not about the show or my life troubles. It is about ethics in game journalism.

suejak reacted to Darren77 in Space Quest Historian podcast - season 2Hi guys,
I just wanted to let you know that I was asked to produce the latest edition of the podcast. Pete Toleman, my boss, is the host, but he got me to do the technical stuff.
He talked for at least 4 hours, about all sorts of stuff - including how the Jews run the media and why women shouldn't be allowed to be firefighters. But I managed to keep some of it on track, and I've condensed the show to 45 minutes.
I just wanted to say thank you to Brandon, Jess, Alan, Serena, Fred and Chris for helping me out by sending in broadcastable material for the show. I hope you enjoy it.
The file is with Chris Pope. Expect it to be out at some point in the next few days, God willing.
I also apologise on behalf of Pete. Man, I really hope he never reads this forum.
