pcj reacted to Rahul in SpaceVenture Prototype #1Hey guys, glad to see everyone trying it out! I'm one of the two guys from Q42 building this thing with the Two Guys. It's been a lot of fun so far, but we still have a long way to go. e1ven seems to have a good idea of how HTML can be used for a game engine and what kind of features we still need to work on.
We're really looking for your thoughts on where you'd like to see this going next. Is inventory important? Death sequences? Music and sound effects? More things to do? Text parser?

pcj got a reaction from Johnathon in Calling all fans! ITS VIDEO TIMEZ!Yeah, I'm probably going to regret this:

pcj got a reaction from Frans in AdventureGamers' forums' thoughts on the Two Guys' KickstarterSad to see it on a forum of people claiming to be "adventure gamers" though.
-
I find it interesting that a decent chunk of the criticism on message forums and comment sections has focused on the Two Guys' promise to include SQ-style death sequences in the game.
I get the impression that, for a lot of younger gamers, deaths are essentially "what's wrong" with old school adventure games -- especially Sierra games. Somewhere along the way, the LucasArts model seems to have prevailed, making games that feature character deaths seem "behind the times" or "unfair" in some sense. In many ways, the Space Quest series' emphasis on gruesomely hilarious (or hilariously gruesome) death scenes makes it emblematic for what a certain segment of the audience perceives as a "broken" gameplay mechanic.
Naturally, as SQ fans, we view these death scenes as part of the charm of the series. For some, though, I think the tendency is to lump character death right alongside unwinnable states as an unpardonable adventure gaming sin.
Just a largely irrelevant observation...

There's also a lot of people acting very precious about their own favourites, worried that more startups means they won't get the game they want. A legit position to take, of course, if a little myopic. More adventure games from more people creates an industry.
Are you telling me, for instance, that the 2GFA game is going to be worse for having to compete to look, sound and play better than its competitors? Yeah, right. Variety and competition drive up quality.
-
Right. And variety and competition is exactly what the scene has been missing for ages and why Telltale's games suck.

pcj reacted to Troels Pleimert in Silly videos and nostalgiaYo, guys. You know that semi-regular schedule I vaguely committed to in the Guys From Andromeda podcast? Well, here's some video fun to help explain what I meant.

Or just watch the sucker right here:

Oh, and if you need help convincing someone that this is worth donating to, maybe shooting them this link instead of trying to write out all the juicy bits of goodness and probably forgetting some along the way may help drive some traffic to the Kickstarter. Or it might deter them. Use at your own discretion.
Either way, massive amounts of enthusiasm means:
A new regular schedule for Space Quest Historian episodes A video you can use to explain to friends why this particular Kickstarter kicks SO much ass Something involving hair -

pcj reacted to ChrisPope in Thank you for sharing your forums!Dear SpaceQuest.net Forums,
First I wanted to apologize for not adding you to the Kickstarter special acknowledgement section sooner. You guys have been a huge driving force and somehow throughout the craziness of yesterday I managed to not add the site name there. I am owning up to that now, and want to let you know that you're added. But hopefully even more important is I'll be making it my mission to get a huge thank you to SpaceQuest.net and the leaders in the upcoming game. Please continue to push hard and lets get this sucker made.

PS- I'm gonna have Mark and Scott on the next podcast episode to get some questions answered :)

pcj got a reaction from Troels Pleimert in SQ3 Monolith Burger as an HTML5 AppSome of you probably saw this, but Martin Kool, creator of Sarien.net, made an HTML5 app about Roger Wilco in the Monolith Burger from SQ3 (kind of) that he's uploaded to the Chrome App Store: https://chrome.googl...hlnpdojdcmelhfd
He's linked it to the Two Guys and is helping them on the Kickstarter.

pcj reacted to Arthur in KICKSTARTER IS LIVE!I have not played much of Sierras games. However, I have played Space Quest 1 (point and click remake or whatever), and finished it if it weren't for the fact that I missed a vital piece from the beginning. So yeah, I kinda gave up - I really didn't want to replay the whole game just to get the ending. But other than the near-constant suffering, I enjoyed it. ;)
I've played a few other adventure games though, and I want more of them. Especially for Linux, so promising that upfront was a big factor for me deciding to back it. But the final straw was Rob Paulsen's involvement in the project. He has voiced so many of my favorite characters, so when he tweeted he was going to be involved I knew I wanted to back this.
The only way this could be more awesome would be getting Frank Welker on board. But I guess you'll just have to make the best out of it without him. (Not that it will be bad, quite the contrary, but he's just phenomenal). ;)

Seeing as the guys are shooting for $500,000, I've increased my pledge to $500. I understand they want a quality game but am concerned that there goal may be a bit high. I hope I am wrong.

pcj reacted to mrkenallen in Ken "your music pal" Allen says "HI"You know, I can see why you might think the BSG theme was an influence. So, yeah, probably. I just don't have a clear memory of what influenced my score for the SQ4 opening. Firstly, is was so long ago, and, secondly, it was a prolific and sleepless weekend for me when I produced the music for that sequence. I just wanted to impress the two guys from Andromeda and, to do so, I pulled out all the stops.
Hats off to Stu Phillips for composing such a wonderful score that was so inspiring.

pcj reacted to Telix Zmodem in What made Space Quest specialWhat made Space Quest special to you? For me, it was:
1. The games were funny! As a kid, I enjoyed the humor more so than LSL, which was over my head!
2. The box art was great! It stood out at Software Etc. It was like Star Wars.
3. There was no 'Star Wars Adventure Game', so it was something that was new, but similar to what I wanted.
4. This was before 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' so it also reminded me of 'Star Trek TOS'.
5. Other games like KQ had you play as a specific character, but Roger was generic enough that I could see me as Roger. It seemed more immersive.
6. It was a game I could play with friends, especially if they hadn't seen it, I would give the full presentation and hype it up like a movie. For a single-player game, that was awesome!
7. I studied every screen of Space Quest games. Mark Crowe did some awesome work with the graphics and animations. It was a very inspirational series!
Can't wait for the SpaceVenture!
