Hmm, I don't like this way of criticizing the dismissing of criticism. If someone wants to dismiss criticism, I think we should let them.   Then again, maybe you are within your rights to criticize any dismissal of criticism as you see fit. Maybe I am in the wrong, with my criticism of your criticism of criticism dismissal.   Something to think about.

Gareth is right guys, SpaceVenture should be run more like FIFA. Now taking bribes for no swiping in the game.

I might follow the World Cup. Considering the current body count, I think it's gonna be a doozy. Probably closer to Counter-Strike than usual, too.

Yeah, the PC Police is currently on a strike. Budget cuts.

Jokes about the World Cup aside, Corey Cole just posted a damn interesting comment with some fascinating historial information on the Kickstarter page. I realise the "If only it had been Ken Williams producing this..."-argument hasn't really cropped up here, but I still wanted to share this bit of insight.

Adding that to Troels' post above, I guess the morale of all this is "Shit happens". With an optional "Deal with it" postfixed ;)

I just wanted to chime in unhelpfully and thank those guys'n'gals (you know who you are) who have stepped in to bring some much needed balance to the criticisms in the latest Kickstarter update.

It's not that criticism isn't valued. I know the Space Pope reads every single thing and the team are having regular meetings to discuss these as well as game matters. No one's opinions are being ignored. But there's also something to be said for keeping your heads down and staying true to your vision, which is exactly what the Guys are doing.

To unnecessarily reiterate, sliding/motion puzzles will NOT be the bread and butter for this game. The demo is NOT to be taken as indication of the final product. The demo was a gift to us backers to show what was going on AT THAT TIME. Anyone who has been involved in a creative process knows how unnerving it is to show a work-in-progress that may have little to no bearing on what the finished product might be -- you hope that people will look at the elements individually and realize it's not a cohesive package yet, and this was exactly the case with the backer alpha demo.

Delays in projects are annoying and it's understandable that people are frustrated. Sitting on the sidelines making easy snide comments about what should and shouldn't have been anticipated is just that: easy -- and not helping anything or anyone. Everyone's hindsight is always 20/20. Real life just has a way of never turning out exactly how you planned.

For me, it's a bit hard to take argumentation seriously because we've only seen a fraction of the game. Probably a fraction of the third that's been completed, too. Of course, they're not gonna show off all the good stuff right now. Pope has written countless of times that Mark, especially, doesn't want to spoil anything major. Judging from that, we can probably conclude that anything released prior to the game that is Mark Crowe-approved will be fairly innocuous.

I think you're acting like you instantly know how the entire game is going to be just by looking at backgrounds (without characters and, presumably, objects you can interact with) and critiquing an early build which didn't even contain the complete script for the section it showcased. It comes off as more than a bit arrogant. The guy who was pretty much forced to take over as lead programmer on the game (pcj) has stated, like, two or three times that you're only really stirring the pot here. That your fears are unfounded. I don't know what else you want. A piece of paper going "SpaceVenture will NOT be what you fear!" signed by the entire team?

In that light, it becomes more than a little bit annoying to read "Yes, but here's a[n] [hyperbolic adjective] worry of mine that would [hyperbolic verb] the entire game for me!" And to me, it honestly doesn't seem like you're interested in a discussion that goes beyond "Well, yes, Fronzel, you could very well be right". I am trying to reply in a serious fashion, you know. Not just put down your arguments for the fuck of it. You could be right, but in my view, chances are you're not.

Ultimately, I suppose it's a "glass half-full, glass half-empty"-type thing. I just choose to be optimistic. Fair enough that some people have become pessimistic due to the delays and their reactions towards the material they've seen, but just remember that:

    1) It's a crowdfunded game, so it's literally based on goodwill.

    2) It was pitched as the Guys from Andromeda doing their thing in 2014. Not as Guys from Andromeda pulling a Tim Schafer, Guys from Andromeda looking over the shoulders of Telltale or the AAA companies, or Guys from Andromeda asking the community for advice when every design decision has to be made.

Even if it's been 2+ years, I personally pledged to give them a chance. Till they either give up or release the game, that's still my goal. And yes, dammit, I will be popping in here regularly to dish out a bit of vitriol to ensure that people do not forget the two points above.

Right, the swiping was part of a release from last year, and if you're complaining about it, you're behind the times anyway. If you have a new idea about the issue, by all means bring it out, but at this point you're just beating a dead horse and it's not helping anyone.

I went back through that demo thread... I think you're skewing the response to the swiping --
most people seem fine with the concept of swiping, as long as the controls for it are
updated and there is dialogue added telling you to swipe:

"I'm ok with the swipe controls so long as there's good visual feedback" - alhazan
"I really like the earlier suggestion for the first screen or two to offer "gameplay tips" in the dialog...swipe in the direction you want it to go..." - audiodane "It's not clear that stuff can be swiped." - Thornado "...the airlock could probably be the perfect spot for a controls tutorial for the swiping." - MusicallyInspired "I think swipes have a potential to open up a load of new puzzle types and/or Easter Eggs if done correctly" - drdrslashvohaul   These quotes you posted are in the same vein... people who are just critiquing the actual controls:   "And also the wipes aren't very intutive“ - tomimt "Swipe controls are a pain“ - Uddasa "The swipe is unintuitive for a mouse on a desktop PC" - shdon "The swiping is realy awkward. [...] So I almost quit playing.“ - Thornado

Honestly, if you want to use a UI from the '90s you should stick with Space Quest. We're going to try new things in SpaceVenture, you should be aware of that.

It won't be - with the swipes they were just trying to extend the old-school adventure game control structure (clicking around on scenes in different modes) with new functionality. Believe me, it's not going to be all dragging around crates.

I think the way that Ace and Rooter work together (each with different aspects that make them better to solve a certain puzzle) certainly is something that wasn't seen in the Space Quest games and will definitely add a new twist without alienating the gamers looking for the traditional adventure.

Well, also there are a lot more pans (and a few zooms) than happen in SQ. I think there are only a few of those in the SQ series and they are happening a lot more in this game (mainly because it's easier to move the camera around the scene rather than have to re-draw the room for a different perspective)

That's certainly true. It reminds me a lot of the DeepShip 86 in terms of rooms.

Something you may not have picked up on in the demo is that the Nostrodomus (the ship Ace boards) is being abandoned due to some threat that Ace must confront (as seen at the end of the demo). (We also saw the Nostrodomus explode due to this threat in a recent KS update). So while it may not be flooded with people in that part of the game, there are certainly people you will bump into later on (remember, several of the KS rewards involved putting backers in game so we'll see a few familiar faces at least).

And finally, a few non-ship shots they've let us see...
    Desert planet:

    Equiv from SQ4:

    Inside something alien-looking:

    Equiv from SQ6:

    Landing place:

    Equiv from SQ6:

Don't know if this is a cutscene or not, but space vehicle:

One thing I noticed while doing this -- with a lot of the shots in SV, the perspective is closer to Ace than the SQ shots are to Roger,
i.e. the "camera" is further away from Roger in SQ... that will most likely mean there are more rooms in SV, as you can't
fit as much of an area in one screen.

It looks like the first spaceship thing is going to be bigger than most SQ areas... there are already around 14 screens for it and
we haven't seen every part of the ship yet (unless we're seeing inside multiple ships in some of the shots).

I think another big thing to mention is that we haven't seen any of the other characters placed within the game yet,
which will go a long way to making it feel populated and lived in as a world.

Yeah, the artwork for SpaceVenture does look pretty damn nice. I love how it reminds me of the art from first 4 SQ games, but in much higher resolution and quality. The character art is top notch as well and presonally I do think SV looks much nicer than some other KS funded adventures with similar budgets. Hell, I'd say it won't crumble down in shame in comparision to bigger budget titles with much bigger art crews.

The Two Guys have always done what they felt like. I'm acting as sort of a liason between them and my experiences playing other adventure games, because they honestly don't want to be influenced by anything else. And I'm trying my hardest not to inadvertently push them in a direction where we go, "Oh, popular opinion dictates that this and this is considered bad form or a bad idea, so we probably shouldn't do that."

In the end I may be completely biased (in fact, I totally am -- hell, I probably love the Space Quest series much more than anyone would consider healthy), but I am determined to let Scott and Mark build whatever the hell they want to build. Because, at least from my completely biased personal experiences, that's usually what gets the best results.

The Two Guys have been masters at taking something that on paper probably sounded like a horrible idea to adventure game purists and turning it into something that inexplicably works. I mean, they pioneered the arcade sequence. They made timer puzzles fun. They made killing off your main character something not to be avoided, but that players actively sought out. That's why I'm not worried. If anything looks or sounds like a bad idea, just wait until you play it. It could change your mind if you give it a chance.

The whole business of the art style, I think, does boil down to taste. I'm sorry. It has nothing to do with detail or lack thereof. This other game we're talking about looks damned amazing; no question about that. SpaceVenture, in my book, does too, but in a completely different way. It's more crisp, dare I say more cartoonish without making that sound derogatory. It takes a no frills approach. This, more than anything, I think is a stylistic choice. It may not appeal to everyone; it may scare people into thinking we're going in a Toy Story sort of direction. I happen to know that's not true.

Tl;dr: The Two Guys are punk as fuck.
