Well, admittedly, the above has made me more critical of SQ1VGA. As a fan, I care about this kind of trivia, so how could it not? Something that has not been mentioned is that KQ1 got a remake that is way closer in spirit to the original. Which is interesting, because King's Quest, as Ken's darling, was always used as the guinea pig for technical innovations. Interestingly, this one time, this status arguably allowed KQ1 to get a faithful, authorised-by-the-designer remake. I think that's rather telling as well.
That said, SQ1VGA was always the odd man out, style wise. And I definitely fell for it more so than the original back when I first discovered Space Quest. It had more immediacy to it, so it got easier across to me. Now that I'm older, it feels a little overblown.

I like the art style, even though it's different, and I very much like Josh's writing. SQ6 is more overtly funny than the other games, and that resonated very well with me, back when I'd still miss some of Scott's more subtle jokes because of the language barrier. It's the Curse of Monkey Island of Space Quest, and CMI is one of my overall favourite adventure games.

But the story I find very forgettable. I don't care much for Stellar either. So the whole plot, in my opinion, ends up playing second fiddle to the click events, the dialogues, Roger bickering with the narrator, etc. And that's ultimately quite a weakness.

I reach for SQ6 very rarely, but when I do, it always manages to at least raise a chuckle. But the story never manages to make me care.

Cartoony =/= 50's retro. There are various styles of artwork that are all cartoony. I really enjoy SQ5's artwork. But it's nothing like SQ1VGA's or SQ6's. There's a tremendous amount of detail in SQ6's backgrounds and I respect that. And while the characters are cel-shaded, at least they're not as bad as and much better animated than KQ7's.

But as far as SQ1VGA's artwork, it's not the sprites and animations I have issue with, it's that round-edged 50's sci-fi look that's just so completely contrasting to the great work that Mark had put into the visual style of Space Quest. Space Quest's art has always been classic, sleek, and stylish, not overly colourful and bubbly like some ages 1-4 kid's PlaySkool funhouse theme park. At least SQ6 stayed true.

Ugh those stupid mantis and chicken space ships....I loved Space Quest's ship designs...all but the ones from that game. They ruined it.

What MusicallyInspired said. The cartoony comic book look of SQ4 and SQ5 was (supposed to be) futuristic and imaginative. SQ1VGA went in the completely opposite direction.

Objectively, I guess the SQ1VGA art isn't bad, per se. It just goes fundamentally against the unspoken art credo of the Two Guys' games.

See, I understood what they were going for in the SQ1VGA remake - it was an homage to EC comics style art - Weird Science (The Comic), Tales from the Crypt, Haunt of Fear.  It was pretty well done, but in the end I don't think it was thematically the best choice for "Space Quest".  I'd play the hell out of another Sci-Fi game like that.

I didn't say you hated it. I agree the soundtrack wasn't the greatest. The only SQ game I feel that had a totally great soundtrack all the way through was 3.

I didn't say it was just the Inner Space angle. That's just one thing. And the only thing I can really 100% pinpoint. There are many things. The art style, Stellar, the soundtrack, the other characters. I also never said I hated the game. And I also don't hate SQ1VGA.

I don't know if it fits in the category, but I made (or I tried to make) a high-resolution version of the screenshot that has been posted on the old spacequest.net, a long time ago, showing a mysterious bear-like creature in a film-strip. After spending a couple hours in paint.net, and coloring the bear with the normal, used Space Quest III colors, this is what I came up with :

    Old one :

    Retexturized :

Doing this showed me a couple things :

One, whatever they were going to do with this bear, they probably didn't finish texturizing it.

Two, the eye of the creature has no pupil.

Three, the eye colors are a lot different than in the original image.

Anyways, that's all that I have for now. I was really hoping to be able to retexturize "The Empire Sucks", on the Tie Fighter, but I might just do that later. Anyways, I hope you enjoy. Stay tuned!

I never said we were smarter. I said we're more impatient now because current technology caters to that mindset more than it used to. We've always had the same potential we have now, it's just easier not to indulge it.

I wouldn't be against the bridle not being mentionedand I'm not against the fact that it is not visible on screen. I do agree that it's a little too far when you have to he standing in exactly the right position. I replayed it recently myself and even though I remembered and knew what to do it took me me a frustrating few attempts.

Also, Rosella cleaning the dwarves house is right from Snow White. So, yeah. Different time. Like a hundred years ago.

Off the top of my head, my favorite "bug is a feature" is pressing the space bar during the intro to get text and speech at the same time (an option apparently removed from the final version).

Also that it is technically possible to avoid the Sequel Police on Estros and make it back to your time pod, but for no real reason. I had detailed instructions for that in the old SQ FAQ.

The secret time code to Ortega: top row left-to-right + first left button on second row.

"Blue frogs on my shoulders makes me happy" line in the audio file that doesn't appear in the game and which NO ONE, not even Scott Murphy, knows what it was for. Big mystery.

Differences in graphics between disk and CD version.

The "room removed for legal reasons" that's in the resource files but inaccessible from the game itself.

I'll try to think of more later.

No, it's not. You can justifiably be a whiny little bitch towards yourself for not having read the terms of service, but the Guys of Andromeda haven't done anything they're not entitled to do. Does it suck that the game is not out yet? Sure does. But the lack of security is part of the crowdfunding model. And the hyperbole is just douchy. "RIP Guys from Andromeda and SpaceVenture". "We will never, ever see this game". Either display a modicum of maturity or fuck off. The former can't be too difficult, seeing as I'm managing to do it. And no, I'm not on the dev team. Might as well let it be an open secret that I have $165 on the line. And, as I was studying at that point, that was a lot of money for me 2-3 years ago. So my point stands: grow up.

Get off Chris' back, man. It's not the guy's fault he has had to pick up the reins as far as the game development goes. He's been very active on Twitter regarding this whole shitstorm, and he also posted a comment on the Kickstarter page.

Also, as he pointed out on Twitter, he has been on Scott and Mark's back about releasing exclusive material more than anyone and there has been a number of cases where either Guy has been willing to budge. Most people in the KS comments seem oblivious to that. It seems like people are viewing Chris Pope as this project's own Paul Trowe when, in reality, he doesn't have that big a say against the Guys. Obviously, there's a fine line when posting a nugget of info like that; you can do it in a conversation on social media, but you can't do it as part of the PR gig. It'll look like a crappy apology. But it's now there for all to see.

Appointing Troels, as much as I obviously love the guy, would change nothing. As a matter of fact, it would likely make things worse, seeing as he's probably even less likely to start butting heads with his idols whenever they refuse to let us fans see some actual stuff from the game.

I don't think Troels is at liberty to do that, even though I agree that this a good idea. In general, I'd love to see some team diaries, which is kinda what you're describing here. But, to paraphrase Chris, he literally cannot get the team to do it. And as for the screenshots, we're now running into the problem above.

Fate of Atlantis is the one game I never gave a fair shake. I liked the intro sequence, but I didn't really enjoy the overall atmosphere.

The Last Crusade was pretty neat for a while, but I hated the Nazi castle with all the fights -- ironic, I suppose, because it's basically just an arcade sequence. I couldn't get through the Nazi castle without losing...

Full Throttle I did finish, and it's ok, despite being easy/on-rails. My biggest problem with it is it seemed to want to be a cartoon rather than a game.

You might want to stay away from songs like Heresy, dude. ;)

Anyway ... Yeah, good picks, people! I love Tool as much as the next guy -- in fact, I even bought that Lateralus vinyl with the double picture discs and the holographic artwork that didn't sound all that great, but looked spectacular -- and I have both Toxicity and Steal This Album from System of a Down (which is one of my wife's favorite bands).

Oh, and I gotta give a shout-out to this one:

Hell fuckin' yeah! Paradise Lost ticks everyone of my boxes with regards to depressing lyrics, punishing guitars, and -- of course -- a good, solid melody you can sing along to. I mean, it may not be everyone's favorite, but I LOVE the song "Symbol Of Life." Anyone who can sing the lines "can't get by with what I've got / always dwell on what I've lost / just a loaded gun, a symbol of my life" convincingly is a fuckin' hero in my book.

Anyway, time for a showcase, ladies and janitors. How about some epic rhythm guitar work to start us off? Brandon, I know you're going to get a kick out of this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3269wR6Kg_M

These guys are (were) my fuckin' heroes of cybermetal. These guys effortlessly took everything that made Fear Factory great and just upped it to the ultimate level. You know that "next level" Tyra Banks always talks about on Top Model? These guys took the fucking warp cheat and went straight on to the last level. I was so sad to see these guys break up. Luckily, I did manage to see them live once and I got one of their guitar picks with "Sybreed" emblazoned on it.

Next up, let's go to Australia:

Sorry I can't show you a performance or anything, but this song is just ... well, it's creepy, it's technically impressive, it's hyper-aggressive, it's melancholic; it's everything I want in a song. These guys are Australian, so you'll have to fill me in on the cultural discrepancies, but, as far as I can tell, this is about a person in an abusive relationship finally exacting his/her revenge on the perpetrator. My favorite line of this song echoes the old Tex Murphy game "Mean Streets" with the breakdown, "My perception covered in red / All of the psychotic voices screaming inside my head / I can't separate anymore." Again, I realize in writing this sounds like any 14-year-old angsty teenagers diary and shit, but in the context of the song, the pause that comes before him screaming "anymore" and then the tranquil, melodic guitar line that follows ... well, shit.

What does this have to do with Tex Murphy, you may ask? Well, every time this dude yells "screaming inside my head," I immediately think of Carl Linsky's tape recorder: "They're in my head! They're in my head!" Okay, so I'm a nerd.

Right, finally ... let's get off our train to Depressionville and get on the expressway to JustPlainFuckingImpressiveTown.

Growing up I was always against metal. I didn't really understand what it was. I assumed it to be just loud noise and pointless aggression/animosity with no real respect for the music. Didn't know how wrong I was (I still believe some is, though).

I "discovered" metal (or rather, discovered how great it is) via Metroid Metal in the beginning, and then video game covers in general after that (Dwelling of Duels and MAGFest stuff). It turns out "metal" is just what I would have called "guitar music". So I liked it and I didn't even know it. It wasn't evil sounding and dripping with mindless hate, it had layers upon layers and the music was actually intricate and enchanting all at the same time. Metal is just rock music with the intensity amped up to 11 with all the delicious musical complexity you could ever want. Needless to say, I love intensity. Actually, I've come to appreciate a lot of soul and r&b music in the same way.

Bands? I still don't really know a whole lot. I used to be a huge music snob years ago when I was a dumb kid and would always go against the flow of what everyone else liked because it must be "dumb". Some of that has still carried over, even though I don't have that opinion anymore, so I don't go out of my way to discover these popular metal groups. Every once in a while someone will recommend me something, though, and I'll actually listen to it and fall in love with it. Need to take more musical suggestions more often. That's something I'm working on. I'm not a musical snob anymore, I promise.

Anyway, these are the metal or metal-related bands I've come to love:

-Pagan's Mind - Norwegian prog awesomeness, like Dream Theatre only heavier. If you don't mind power metal vocals. I love their actual music, though. Not so much from Heavenly Ecstacy, but they're earlier albums (sans their first, which was a bit of a flop, and they later reimagined themselves) are just amazing, musically. Some of the best and most talented guitar solos I've ever heard. Plus, their albums are all about sci-fi and Stargates!

    -Dream Theatre

-Ayreon - The epic sci-fi prog metal/rock/everything concept works of Arjen Lucassen. Guest vocalists and musicians on every double album. Just great. And he loves to use old "outdated" hardware and equipment. It's just great. His drummer Ed Warby who plays on most of his albums is one of the sickest drummers I've ever heard. I was excited to learn that one of his best albums The Human Equation is getting a live theatre performance. Most of the vocalists (including James LaBrie) from the album are involved as well. I was sad to hear that Devin Townsend and Mikael Åkerfeldt wouldn't be able to make it, though. Still, it will be epic. I need to listen to this guy's other projects as well, like Star One.

-Circle of Illusion - These guys aren't strictly metal. In fact it seems like they do a lot of styles like rock, electronic, soul, r&b, and even disco. But it's prog greatness and they do have a lot of metal as well. Fairly new group, I think. Yet another concept album band. Loving concept albums lately.

Nine Inch Nails - I haven't listened to nearly enough of this, but what I've heard tells me that Trent Reznor is a musician with true soul. Loved Hurt and some of the other tracks I've heard.
