Troels Pleimert got a reaction from MusicallyInspired in Space Quest Historian Season 3
Bumping an old topic: As you may have noticed, the 3rd season of the Space Quest Historian Podcast is actually a thing now!

We're two episodes in, and some of the things I was teasing over a year ago are actually in the show now:

    - CyberCedric ... and, yes, Frederik ended up voicing him.

    - Broader themes: I started doing "celebrity interviews" with other adventure game dev's. So far, we've got James Dearden (Technobabylon) and Li Boar (Gibbous). Future guests include Agustín Cordes (Asylum), Natalia Figueroia and Isak Martinsson (Fran Bow), and Dave Gilbert (the Blackwell series).

    - Musical stuff: I talked for two hours with James Mulvale, Brandon Blume and Ken Allen, and I've cut that chat into 10 scintillating parts. And, SPOILER, I actually DID get in touch with Tim Clarke (ex-Dynamix composer of SQ5 soundtrack) -- thanks, Ken! -- but I haven't had the chance to interview him yet.

    - More Pete Toleman: Pete now recounts his early days. Featuring our very own Joe Cassara as Pete's "announcer."

Things I did not get to include:

    - More Chuck Clusterbluck. Tom King (who played Chuck) seems to be very busy these days, so I haven't written him in. If he gets in touch with me during the season, I'll be happy to include him, but it's not planned.

    - More Lucky Corner. Alan Luckachina was on board, but had to bow out at the last second due to other commitments.

Anyway, hope you guys like it. It's not as Space Quest-centric as the previous seasons, but I figured it was time to branch out and do more stuff. I'd love to hear what you guys think of the "new" format (which is very much like the old format, just with less pre-recorded stuff and more interview-y stuff).

That's Joe Cassara. He was on board to be the narrator for Space Quest: Vohaul Strikes Back, when they were still actively doing a talkie version of that game.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I'd like to make a suggestion as well in case it's not too late. I've been listening to the Space Quest Historian podcasts, and Gareth Millward (the guy who plays Pete Toleman) really cracks me up! He reminds me a bit of Wheatley from Portal 2, who was one of the funniest characters in any game that I've played recently.

VSB was more of a comedy-first game (more akin to SQ3 or SQ6), and Incinerations wanted to tell a story (more akin to SQ5). I really respect and love the immense effort that went into both games -- VSB because the team went through so much to get the game out, and Incinerations because it was basically a one-man job.

Personal preference? Probably Incinerations. But don't tell Fred that. ;)

I'm holding off doing Let's Play's of Space Quest games until I've actually gotten somewhat good at this stuff. My first couple of LP's were, let's say, quite amateurish. They're not much better now, but at least I've fixed the weird mic audio and the frame rate problems that were bothering me during my latter Normality episodes and the first couple of Broken Age episodes.

For that style of game, I'm rather partial towards Gone Home. That one really resonated with me. For obvious reasons.

My own audio tribute isn't going so well. I had hoped more people would send in their thoughts, but, so far, only one person has. I'm going to see if any of the Two Guys or the Pope would have something to say, although I realize it may be a bit touchy so soon.

    This. Very this.

I think you hit the nail on the head there, Brandon. For my sake, at least, one of the key things that made SV happen was that so many bridges were built, animosities forgotten and sour relationships patched. That's what makes me really proud to be in this crowd. Sure, at the end of the day, we're just a bunch of nerds who like our sci-fi comedies a little on the sarcastic side. But the community spirit -- I mean, just look at how fast the SQN/Broomcloset merger suddenly happened! -- is really second to none.

Paul is like the Blue Meanie at the end of Yellow Submarine, trapped in a land of colors and flowers. (And, if you've ever seen that acid trip of a movie, you know he comes around at the end. Not holding my breath for that one, but still.)

Josh deactivating his Facebook page, as far as I know, had nothing to do with him leaving/being asked to leave Replay. It may have been related to it, but I got the feeling it was just him needing to wind down his on-line social life? (I also have no idea of the story surrounding his departure from Replay, either. I'm guessing that, in due time, the man himself -- or Trowe -- will let us know. Hopefully, they both will -- Josh for the honesty, and Trowe for the snidey, unintentionally funny, mostly-fictional side. ;) Sorry, that was mean. Back on my high horse.)

Sounds like someone got busy with the ban-hammer.

Unlikely, my friend, since he now believes that SQN is populated solely by trolls. Not troels'; trolls. ;) From his witty and insightful retort on Kickstarter:

"So go troll on spacequest.net and gossip about me because honestly, I won't lose sleep over anything you guys have to say about me."

He's right; I think he has more pressing things to lose sleep about, to be honest.

I'm so glad to hear people rallying for this and seeing through the bully tactics. And even though we have a right to be furious, I'm happy to see that we're also taking the high road on this.

Troels Pleimert got a reaction from suejak in Walking Speed of Character? Option for Quick Pace is Desirable
I like the double-click-to-run mechanic myself -- the Blade Runner game used this especially effectively where repeated clicking made the character run faster. I also really like the double-click-on-exit to change rooms mechanic, too.

But some games, I feel, also took it too far: in Torin's Passage, you could right-click anywhere on the screen to instantly teleport there. And after a while you start getting lazy and just zip all over the screens instead of leisurely exploring the game world. And in Beneath A Steel Sky, turning up the game speed also increased the speed of everything around you, not just the main character's walking speed. Those are, I think, some of the pitfalls to watch out for.

Sorry, not yet. I still haven't gotten quite a good grip on it, and Fred's keeping me pleasantly distracted with that other podcast of ours.

But season 3 is not dead, far from it.

I have some ideas, including putting more focus on the fan community, and actually start to do live content (as opposed to pre-recorded). I'd love to spotlight a fan or someone who was involved with the games, and have them tell their story. Instead of having them mail me a voice file, I would actually get on Hangout or Skype with them and chat for half an hour, then cut out the bits that were interesting and use that on the show.

I'd also still like to do a story arc involving SteveBot, but I haven't figured one out yet. Likewise, I'd like to continue the Musical Interlude segment and I was itching to have the gents Clarke/Stevens from Dynamix talk about their SQ5 soundtrack. But I haven't been able to get a hold of them. Another idea would be to ask interview guests what tune from Space Quest they'd like to hear, and why, and have that be the Musical Interlude.

So, the format in my mind currently is: A "topic" segment (as usual), a live segment (interview with someone), and then whatever voice mails/submissions I've gotten in (Lucky Corner, Pete Toleman, Chuck Clusterbluck, Ken Allen, etc.).

But I have no idea what guests to feature yet, and thus I have no idea when the show will start again. Yet. You will be the first to know, obviously. :)

Thanks for the suggestion! In my original proposal document for Fred (that sounds almost romantic), one of the suggested topics was "Walkthroughs: Cheating or not?". The subject of game difficulties in recent years would be hard not to broach in that regard.

We haven't gotten around to covering it yet, though.

I think I forgot to mention it here, but Frede and I are doing a little podcast on the side where we bitch and rant about adventure games in general.

It's a phenomenally low-effort kind of affair, so you may have to get used to the audio quality. It is quite literally produced by me calling up Fred, recording the call on my phone (using the Record My Call app) and then throwing the whole thing online without any editing.

It does, however, boast a pretty kick-ass chiptune intro theme by MusicallyInspired.

I know the fan-SQ7 had planned to get rid of the DeepShip 86 characters early on in their game, and Josh Mandel was on board for that plot development, so if Josh had been allowed to continue the series in an official capacity, I have a feeling he'd have done the same.

As to what Roger's next mission that Stellar mentions at the end of the game, I really have no idea. And I strongly suspect neither Josh nor Scott had, either.

I'd love to have seen Space Quest return to the more "futuristic comic book" style of SQ3, SQ4 and SQ5. (Well, SQ5 was maybe a little too "pretty" and not grungy enough for my tastes, but I can't deny it looks friggin' gorgeous.) SQ6 kind of tread this weird line between Disney-ish animation and gritty backgrounds, which didn't feel cohesive. And neither do I think a "Curse of Monkey Island" type aesthetic would work for Space Quest. For my money, it has to be dirtier and grimier.
