Well, yeah -- apart from some great additional writing by Josh Mandel and Ken Allen's kick-ass soundtrack, the VGA version will always be the inferior one. In my mind, at least. Oh, and don't mention the VGA version to Scott Murphy -- he will LOSE. HIS. SHIT.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to SteveHNo96 in Other kickstarters that need helpEvil little shit. You know, that pretty much sums him up to a T. There's something wrong with a guy who would intentionally sabotage other Kickstarters out of spite. So yeah, those three words seem to fit him perfectly.
You may never know how truly evil he is (mostly because of events that won't be discussed here) but let's just say that not only does he look like Leisure Suit Larry, he's much lower in the primordial gene pool.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Frede in List of Space Quest Fan GamesWell, the game is out there, so people are free to decide whether they love it or hate it. I should know - VSB has gotten a fair bit of flak as well. Producing a fan game does not necessarily mean insta-worship, and it's not going to disappear just because someone doesn't like it. Also, this is me disagreeing with you. On a discussion forum. Not picking your statement to bits.
You're right to talk about respect, though. But some of us have reasons for not liking that game, assuming this is SQ4.5 you're talking about, nor respecting its creator. I know that statement is annoyingly cryptic, so here's the story, for the umpteenth time (yes, I'm bitter and I like rambling):
The guy who made SQ4.5 worked as composer on Incinerations. As did I. But I turned in music I had made myself. He ripped a bunch of music off some film soundtracks and sent in that. When he was busted, it was too late to delay the game and he wouldn't even admit what he'd done; he was blaming his "record company". Cause they'd gone off and used his Space Quest music for Battle: Los Angeles and TRON Legacy without his permission. Yeah, that'll be the day.
And, just to be clear, Chris Ushko who made this game had asked for original music. The entire game had a temp soundtrack during development, so if he wanted to risk a C&D, he wouldn't even have had to bring any composers on board. He HAD a ripped soundtrack handy!
I think it's entirely my right to harbour resentment for these actions and judge this person's other "creative" works based on it. He made a brilliant game look slightly worse, he is still endangering its very existence (unless Disney never finds out about the TRON music) and he potentially made the work of us other composers come off worse. You know, cause if one of the composers is a rip-off, someone might think the others are too. All that for 15 minutes of fame.
I hear the "original soundtrack" in SQ4.5 is anything but. Wonder who the record company sold his music to there.
By all means, use ripped resources to convey your story if you must. But be honest about it and don't let your lies potentially damage other people's reputations. Have pure intentions. Then your "Space Quest mashup" of sorts (admittedly, I tend to love mashups) is worthy of my respect. I hope the above clears up why I think this game is not.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Troels Pleimert in Least Favorite Space QuestTruth: Sierra changed Radio Shock to Hz So Good of their own free will because they didn't want a lawsuit.
Truth: No women's organizations ever sued or complained over the Latex Babes. Mark was kind of disappointed, actually.
Truth: They actually did get in trouble for using the Eveready/Energizer/Duracell bunny in SQ4, because, apparently, the bunny is owned by one company overseas and another company domestically (in U.S.). It was settled out of court, though, so no lawsuit.
Truth: ZZ-Top actually found out about their appearance, years after the release of the game, and threatened to sue (ironic having no sense of humor and sporting beards like that, eh?). Again, settled out of court.
Truth: I'm a jerk.
Truth: So is Fred.
Truth: Space Quest fans are awesome.
Truth: My foot itches.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Frede in I'd like to see SQ3 redone like SQ2 wasYeah, remakes are tricky for some reason. Probably because a well-made fan remake can be difficult to distinguish from an official, licenced product. When we did Vohaul Strikes Back, we were never contacted by Vivendi, or once the Sierra properties changed hands, Activision. And we kept going for nine years during which we were quite open about the project. We only turned to near-complete radio silence once Space Quest 7 was axed.
A theory that was making the rounds on our team was that the lack of a number probably cleared us. Had we called ourselves Space Quest 8 or something like that, all hell would probably have broken loose. That, and people have largely referred to the game sans the "Space Quest" prefix. Neither strategy can be used for a remake, obviously. But it is apparently possible to steer clear of Activision should you have to.
Or maybe it was just all dumb luck.

Yeah, but it's still nice to hear the presentation, though. You might hear something that they didn't bring up here in the thread. Plus this podcast reaches farther than just the community of these forums. ;)

Well, don't hurry to tell us now how you did that.

Oh, come on, the Quake 4 gag was brilliant! "I knew it had a Q in it somewhere!" I was laughing my ass off. "That's ... not how I remember it."
And Fred's Cedric doll will haunt me 'til the day I die. You fucker. ;)

Deadline: November 1st
Deadline passed! Video complete!

Decided to make a new thread for this. For those not in the know, following the events on the latest Kickstarter update, I thought it'd be nice to make a mass tribute video to the Two Guys and the Space Pope for all they've done and are going to do and for giving then some encouragement and a morale boost.
I don't know exactly what goes on behind the scenes, but after the...comment on the update, and the events that transpired afterward including the incredible level-headed and unwavering support from the backers, it seemed aporopriate to reinforce that support by blasting them with a completely unnecessary but heartfelt gob of sobbing thanks to the Two Guys for getting back together to make us games and to Chris Pope for being the great mind and engine that put them together again in the first place.
My idea for the video is simple. A short video (about 5-10 mins? I'm open to suggestions) of edited footage of the fans being overly emotional about all the Two Guys have done for them and how they changed their lives. Maybe even with a lot of sarcasm in places. And then ending on a serious note to show that we really do support them and that we support SpaceVenture and all of their future endeavours. Something to make them laugh and cry all at the same time. :) I'll throw some sappy music in there too for maximum sappage effect. I might even compose something myself, or just use some tracks from the SQ games or something. Or if anybody feels like contributing music or something else then by all means please feel free!
So if you'd like to submit a video here are some guidelines.
-Make it about 5 minutes or so. A couple minutes of a comedic over-emotional monologue of thanks and support, and a short note of serious business and honest well wishing and support at the end. I'll be picking and choosing the best bits I find to keep it condensed down. Or if it all fits then I'll use it all! If we don't mind this thing going 15-20 minutes then I'm game for that too! But don't limit yourself. If you've got some gold then just let it all out! I'll be editing clips back and forth of different sections between people and not putting whole videos back to back, if you know what I mean...what do you call that?
-Don't worry, it doesn't matter if you don't think of yourself as a particularly funny person. But if you think you can only be serious, then don't let that stop you. Send what you got! Likewise, if you don't think you can really be serious then just send in your sarcasm and wit. It will be used.
-It doesn't matter what format your video is in. As long as we can hear your voice and see you that's fine.
-If you have no camera but can record with a mic, just send that with a picture of yourself or an avatar if you don't want anybody to see you. That could actually be hilarious. You could make it sound like leaving a message on the answering machine and you misunderstood the point and thought you were getting money or something for doing it. I don't know! As long as its funny and or supportive just send it in! I'm wide open to suggestions on how to make it better. This is not my project but all of our project and as such should reflect the community as a whole and their ideas.
Ideally it'd be neat to have the video finished before their Oct 16th unveiling update when they'll tell us all about why the game was delayed and all that stuff. Just to show that although we appreciate the update and transparency and that we might be disappointed that we won't be getting Two Guys gaming goodness for a little while longer, in the end it doesnt matter and it won't change the fact that we're still going to support them to the end. But it's not the end of the world if it takes some people a little longer to get something together. That's totally fine. This could just as easily be an answer video to the coming update rather than a pre-emptive one.
You can upload your recorded video/audio file somewhere and link here to inspire others, or PM it to me if you're a wuss :), or you can email it to me at my email shine62 [at] gmail [dot] com.
Also, I'll be putting it together, but I'll confess that I'm not the best and most talented video editor in the world and if anybody who is better at it and wants a crack at making it more awesomer than I ever could, you are welcome to do so!
So that's it! Get filming/recording and send in your funny faces and voices! Good luck!

That is a subjective view. The QfG series has a very loyal following, perhaps in part because the character that you build can be imported from one game into the next. It provides for a continuity that goes beyond the other series that keep the same protagonists. It also successfully combines elements of an RPG with an adventure game, with the emphasis on the Adventure parts.
The KQ games also have a fair following with KQ6 generally considered by many as one of the all time best adventure games. This is probably in large part because of Jane Jensen's influence, which brings up her signature series, GK, which also has a very loyal following.
I'll leave it to the LSL fans to say why they love that series.
The remaining series have their following, but not on the scale as the previous ones.
Edit: This could be a fairly large in itself, so it may be best to split it off into its own thread.

drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from Intendant S in Space Quest Historian Podcast - The Official ThreadReally enjoyed Serena's piece, and totally agree that this should be a recurring feature as we get new news on various Kickstarters. Perhaps a segment which looks at some of the other adventure game series? While I played quite a few of them, my knowledge is far more limited than most of you, and I'd like some good recommendations of other quality adventures to procure.

Ah, yes. The HTML5 prototypes. I thought they were cute and showed that Scott and Mark still had that comedy charm, but so many cringed at it that it nearly broke the campaign.
And count me in as not-a-fan of crate puzzles. I nearly gave up on BS3 because of it.

drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from Troels Pleimert in SpaceVenture Update #82 (Split from Criticism thread)To be fair to the guys, they tried releasing imperfect stuff to show their work (the prototypes) and it über backfired. Perhaps swinging between extremes isn't the best policy (;)) but this is uncharted territory for them. Mistakes are bound to be made.
I liked the update a lot. Very self-aware and honest. I would hope that we get some more content just to show life. The podcast is a good start. It doesn't have to be game footage. Just the odd message / community-created content. Where's Glans Handerson when you need him?
