drdrslashvohaul reacted to MusicallyInspired in Back Seat DesignersI never said we were smarter. I said we're more impatient now because current technology caters to that mindset more than it used to. We've always had the same potential we have now, it's just easier not to indulge it.

And it all might happen sooner than you think ... dun-dun-duuuuun!

That was a great episode. Got me right in the feels. Jess, Fred and Pope made me laugh, Brandon brought teh rawk and Lucky China dropped some cool perspectives on what was ostensibly the topic. And, really, Gareth deserves a great big man-bear-hug for putting the whole thing together on short notice and being incredibly uncharacteristically sweet about the whole thing.
But we all know it's not about the show or my life troubles. It is about ethics in game journalism.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to JDHJANUS in Space Quest Historian podcast - season 2Heart hat, huh, Brandon? :D
Your music piece was fantastic! It sounds pretty awesome!! I look forward to hearing more!
Gareth, Frederik, Jess, Serena, and Alan, it was great to hear your parts as well! Thanks for sharing!
Sorry that I wasn't able to contribute to the most recent podcast. *Apparently* my story wasn't acceptable for Pete Toleman... ;)
(Actually, I legitimately dropped the ball and have been crazy busy and wasn't able to get a recording in on time).
That having been said, my story is continuing, and the next chapter should (barring any random problems that would delay it) be recorded for the next chapter!
Darren, I hope for your sake that Pete Toleman doesn't read these forums as well. Then again, I'm not sure where Priapic would be without you!
Talk to you later!

Thank you Josh! I'm glad you enjoyed my segment! I have a few choice words for Pete as well as a few others on the next exciting episode of The Lucky Corner! :D

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Collector in Gold Rush! ClassicI have encountered people who formed attitudes about DOSBox from years ago with much slower machines and when DOSBox had much lower compatibility and never re-evaluated DOSBox. It is not unusual for people to have never touched it since. This includes pre-Intel Mac users and retro hardware freaks. PPC did not have access to the dynamic core and DOSBox was generally pretty slow on it. Many retro hardware freaks have not touched DOSBox since 0.58 and think the sound is crap. Sound accuracy is very important to Qbix and the quality of DOSBox's sound shows this. Even ScummVM uses audio code lifted from DOSBox. More often than not, there is nothing you have change with DOSBox's audio settings, but many don't realize that you have to use the game's setup to get optimal audio, just as you had to on a real DOS PC. Case in point. Many of the SCI0 to SCI1.1 games shipped with Roland MT-32 set as default. Play this through AdLib and it will sound like holy hell.
As MI notes, DOSBox is incredibly easy to use once you grasp the concepts of mounting. In fact, for many games it can be as simple as putting a shortcut to DOSBox on the desk top and dragging and dropping a game's EXE onto the shortcut.

drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from Troels Pleimert in Al Lowe retires (again), probably due to issues with Paul TroweHe also recently went back on the abuse front with a prominent adventure game community member because they had the temerity to click on his LinkdIn account. (Seriously - who pays that much attention?).
The positive for me is that he seems to be a parody of himself. As someone who hasn't had to deal directly with his bullshit, he's just brilliant as a muse for writing criticism of the gaming industry. I mean, blocking someone who tried to promote his games? That's almost literally a word-for-word enactment of a sketch I wrote for the SQH podcast.
Melon.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to MediaGlitch in Space Quest III Tribute VideoI had too much time on my hands and made a YouTube video about Space Quest III. If you're incredibly bored, you can watch it. If you've got something better to do though, I totally understand lol.

I just don‘t understand. Why this? Why now? It‘s been over a year since the shitstorm hit the fan. Many a bag of popcorn was consumed, but I thought that - save for a few disgruntled backers still waiting for their shit to arrive - this was over and done with. Did he realise that he ruined his career and reputation and figure „Well, if interwebz drama is all I‘m good for, then dammit, interwebz drama they shall receive!“

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Troels Pleimert in Al Lowe retires (again), probably due to issues with Paul TroweAt least something good came from the whole Replay debacle: I got to know Jeroen, Tom, Serena and other magnificently magical people who deserved so much better.
Jeroen's a truly cool guy who loves adventure games and has fantastic facial hair.
Tom is a true friend who barely sleeps but stays up making cool shit all night instead.
Serena is, well ... need I say more?
And, for better or worse, it totally brought the community even closer together.
So there's that. ;)

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Frede in Phoenix Online Remaking Gabriel Knight 1Gabriel Knight is a sexist asshole, and I think it's fair enough if some people can't see past that. I think it makes him endearing, and the other characters often get to one-up him, making him the butt of a lot of jokes. It makes the outcome of his romance with Malia all the more heartbreaking and it paves the way for a series-wide character arc. He's a lot mellower in The Beast Within as a result of his experiences in the previous game. As opposed to someone like King Graham who's essentially a walking cardboard cutout throughout the King's Quest series. I don't think it has anything to do with "progressiveness". Seems that some people just don't like human ugliness in their games.
I completed the game yesterday. I'm not gonna write a long-winded review, but here's my personal low-down:
Pros:
The cutscenes are brilliant. Especially the new cutscene in the police station, as well as the way the ending plays out. The music is (mostly) great; there are still some cues that sound like overcompressed crap (listen to the way the drums drown out everything in the Gedde Mansion theme), but there are fewer of them than there was on the pre-release soundtrack. The new take on the Voodoo Museum cue is awesome. The animations are much, much better than Moebius. I'm so happy Phoenix are finally using motion capture. No more drunk hunchbacks! The new voices are surprisingly good, with the lone exception of Wolfgang Ritter whose accent is a Frankensteinian mess of German and American accents. It didn't take long before I had gotten over the loss of Curry, Hammill, Remini and Dorn. In fact, the actor playing Dr. John manages outstage Michael Dorn, in my opinion. The remake sometimes manages to outcreep the original. The rope-skipping girls outside the police station freaked me out and Hartridge's dead body looks a tad grislier to me. I wish Phoenix had let the horror element shine a bit more, cause when they have the balls to do so, they pull it off better than I expected. I love that Gerde, Schloss Ritter and Rittersberg have been retconned to match the more realistic way they're handled in the sequel. No more Disney castles, nor snowfall in June. And Gerde is confirmed to consume food other than a truckload of potatoes. Cons: The vase-busting cemetery squirrel, Sam's advertising campaign, the Ask-the-Loa machine and the Ritter crest slider puzzle are all - to be frank - moronic additions. The new stuff should have been optional. The former two could have been written by Roberta Williams in her overrated, Cheese Machine-writing "prime" and the two latter, while being relatively easy to solve, don't fit into the narrative at all. The only positive thing is that the first one allows Willy Walker to be even more of an asshole. "I said $120, m'sieur." That made me laugh. The game is still buggy as hell. Now that I've finished it, I feel that my rage against Phoenix was way over-the-top, but it still kinda tarnishes their reputation to me. Why not wait 1-2 months longer before releasing it? Big Finish pulled it off and I'm sure that time helped them make Tesla Effect more stable. It amazes me that the QA team weren't able to find the Moseley's wallet bug on their own and it gives me the (wrongful, I hope) impression that the testers frankly aren't very good at their job. The graphics are rather good most of the time, but sometimes, they also drop the ball. Like Richard Corbett mentioned in his review, some of the gritty locations in the original game are now clean as a whistle. Not the biggest of problems for me, but the graphics often just aren't as atmospheric. Some screens, like the Dixieland Drugstore, are welcome exceptions. Ultimately, while I think the cons are pretty big, I feel there are more pros to this game. I do recommend that fans of the original play it, and I hope we might see a re-adaption (rather than a 1:1 remake) of The Beast Within some day, if not a Gabriel Knight 4. -
drdrslashvohaul reacted to tomimt in Phoenix Online Remaking Gabriel Knight 1I do find it baffling, that some people think game characters should all be cut from the same cloth, as in being heroic and chivalric and all that jazz. I do wonder why they do feel like writers should shackle themselves in regards of what kind of charcaters they write. Some people do kind of miss the point in that to write something is not the same thing as to advocate something. Not always atleast.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Fronzel Neekburm in SQ4 without zombie in SQ12That is so supremely fucked up! I absolutely love the idea!
(As a side note: I find it amazing how one of the most nightmarish scenes in any video game I've ever played is actually in a comedy game. Kudos to suejak for somehow finding a way to make that sequence even more terrifying.)

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Capn_Ascii in SQ Multiplayer. How'd it be?Ignoring the more suggestive aspects of this statement for the time being, this does remind me of something. I've been playing with/DMing for a tabletop RPG group (through IRC) for years, a group that started with members of this very community. Well, more accurately, with members of this community's former, pre-Spaceventure-revival incarnation: myself, BLusk, Jeysie, and SlowIdent.
None of those folks are still with me playing anymore (something about 'real life' or some crap. Boo!), but back when they were, I actually ran a couple of Space Quest campaigns for them. I stole borrowed a number of d20 gameplay elements, including a bunch of stuff from the Star Wars KOTOR games, and adapted a bunch of SQ material to fit those rules. Things like a list of playable races, feats to replicate Roger's unusual anti-bell-curve luck factor, statistics for SQ technology and equipment, a galactic map (with original game locations laid out on it) for use as reference, etc. I think I still have most of that stuff lying around...
