I don't like any of the locations or the atmosphere in SQ6, except for maybe the shuttle which is pretty neat. I just think it's really really funny. I also think the voice actors are top notch. I love Roger's portrayal. I dislike the portrayals of Roger as being so dimwitted he can't even talk right. He's not a neanderthal, he's just very very clueless. Perfect representation in SQ6.
Roger: "Hey, what the-....!"
Gary Owens: "While we await a fully formed thought from Roger, it should be noted that there is some kind of toxic gas filling the room."
Roger: "Hey! There's some kind of toxic gas filling the room!"
The writing, the delivery....comedy gold.

For me it starts amazingly, and then just gets more boring in terms of locations as it goes on...
I think it's not necessarily that the computer system and inside-the-body areas are horrible, they're ok,
it's just that they take up too much of the game and it means the game winds down really
unsatisfactorily for me. Those areas feel like "filler" areas rather than main events.
I think if there had been even just ONE more big area at the end that was maybe on an alien
planet or something like that, then I think SQ6 might have been my favorite of the series.
I just get a sense of disappointment when I think about it though, with the way it progresses as it is.

I don't hate it. In fact I think it's probably the funniest in the series. I just think it's the least faithful to the series in terms of tone and presentation. It's a great funny science fiction adventure. Going inside a body is not very interesting. I never liked the characters either. Or the locations. It has this air of boredom around it. The jokes are funny, but I don't care about the story or the characters. It's just not interesting and not Space Quest enough for me. It's a decent game on its own, but as part of the SQ series it suffers.
Not to knock on Josh's design too much, he's a great designer, but the Two Guys do SQ better.

drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from JimmyTwoBucks in Most frequently-replayed Space Quest title?I don't quite get the hate for SQ6. It's a game with loads of great set pieces (Polysorbate LX, the DeepShip, etc.), it just lacks the narrative to draw it all together. It's far from my least favourite.

drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from WilcoWeb in SQ1 VGA: Stop the HateOf course you can judge the game on its own merits, but if you're a fan of Scott and Mark's work it will colour your overall impression of it. Don't be so obtuse.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to penguinfan in IGN SpaceVenture interviewIf this interview was part of a conspiracy to get Mr Moneybags into the adventure game market, it might be a pretty widespread conspiracy. Look at all those adventure game articles by the same author listed under "IGN's Year of Adventure" on the second page, hmm...

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Collector in SQ1 VGA: Stop the HateThe issue is not where it was sent out for outsourcing, but that it was outsourced. While outsourcing is not a certainty of poor quality, it often has. New developers or outsiders may "get" the project, but it has also lead to atrocities like MCL and BOB.
-
drdrslashvohaul reacted to MusicallyInspired in SQ1 VGA: Stop the HateIf you mean cheap as in financially, yes it is. If you mean cheap as in low quality, I've already refuted that with the MI2 example. Again, I don't believe Koreans make crap artwork. Their artwork is fine. I simply mean that it was outsourced and therefore by definition not part of the team. They got some quick artwork (that is more than competent in quality) to fish out a quick cash grab. They could have outsourced to China, Russia, New Zealand, or New Jersey. My reaction would be the same, unless the artwork had somehow randomly lived up to the style of the other games.
Really it's not their fault at all, though. Like I said before, the art director for the project signed off on everything. It's really his fault.
-
drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from Frede in SQ1 VGA: Stop the HateYes, there's a distinction between assuming the outsourcing affected the game and knowing that it did. We're in the latter camp.
Not all outsourced stuff is shit (as Brandon shows with Monkey Island) and not all of it is out of step with the original team. This just so happened to be.
Prejudice is where you assume something based on stereotype. In this case the accusation fits the reality. It could have all been done in house and been equally out of step with the rest of the series; or outsourced and captured Mark's style seamlessly.
But, anyway. I like the VGA version, but I also feel like it didn't feel like "proper" SQ. Someone here said it was like a fan game, and I'd go with that. Having discovered the series via SQ2 (which my dad bought based on playing SQ1), I prefer the parser and keyboard interface, as well as the overall feel of the original.
Didn't realise it was drawn in Korea. Ultimately, I think it's a but of a diversion. It's simply another example of how it was a) not Scott and Mark and b) done to maximise profit. Which I think was The Two Danes from Danedromeda's original issue that started the bun fight.
Nowt wrong with any of what Sierra did, by the way. Just makes me think a little less of it (personally) as an overall package.

drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from penguinfan in IGN SpaceVenture interviewThere could be a whole host of reasons. It wouldn't be in keeping with the Two Guys' (and Chris's) style to do this to drum up capital investment and/or an impending release, but, yeah, could be that.
There's also nothing to suggest that it wasn't just a fan, or someone following the kickstarter story who wanted to do a very easy, very quick piece of e-mail copy and paste to get something up on the site and earn his/her $1.75 for a puff piece. There's no analysis there - it's just like one of those "interviews" the fan sites used to do back in the day.
What concerns me more than anything is the cynicism. Free thinking and critique requires questioning people in the public eye. It doesn't mean assuming that everyone is up to shenanigans and everyone is out to screw people over. Ask those questions about Scott and Mark. But don't assume it's the default position. Because if you think that's how they operate, then why give them any money in the first place? I prefer Hanlon's razor - Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.
If you genuinely think all journalists, businessmen and politicians are totally corrupted and have no desire to do good, then either:
a) do something about it and become a good journalist, businessman or politician; or
b) find your nearest doomsday prepper colony and ask about their long-term membership programme.
-
drdrslashvohaul reacted to MusicallyInspired in SQ1 VGA: Stop the HateOh come on. Don't start that. It has nothing to do with them being Korean. Their artwork is quite fantastic, actually. It has everything to do with them not being Sierra in-house staff and not matching the vibe of the rest of the series. Actually, the fault really lies with Ken Williams and the art director(s) who signed off on it. It's not because "they're Korean". It just shows how lazy Sierra was in developing the game.

Nobody said that the only reason they didn't like SQ1 was because of Scott and Mark not being involved. It was just the one point they made in the thread before moving on.
So you're not "just sayin'" about there needing to be more valid criticism (because nobody claimed or denied that). You're just shit stirring.
But, hey. You're edgy. You speak your mind. You're not going to kowtow to what "the man" says you're supposed to behave like. Manners are for squares. For mealy mouthed sheeple. You talk. You bring the truth. You say what needs to be said, because it needs to be said. You are: Fronzel Neekburm.
