Nobody said that the only reason they didn't like SQ1 was because of Scott and Mark not being involved. It was just the one point they made in the thread before moving on.

So you're not "just sayin'" about there needing to be more valid criticism (because nobody claimed or denied that). You're just shit stirring.

But, hey. You're edgy. You speak your mind. You're not going to kowtow to what "the man" says you're supposed to behave like. Manners are for squares. For mealy mouthed sheeple. You talk. Scott Manley backs quite a lot of Kickstarters and Early Access titles, mostly to do with sci-fi.
Anyway, one of the good points he makes here is that Double Fine spent far more and got far less productivity out of their project than comparable games. Rimworld, FTL, Maia, Kerbal Space Program. Despite having a bigger, more-established studio, they were pumping out less material than one guy in his house in Canada (Rimworld). Pretty pathetic, really.

I know a lot of Kickstarters - the Two Guys Included - have realised that maybe having a developer forcing you to keep deadlines isn't always a terrible thing. But they were, for the most part, 1-5 people in a virtual office. Double Fine has the infrastructure. Just needs a man with a whip...

I'll be honest, and I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually like the remake a lot. Moreso than the original. But then again, my perspectives are a bit eschewed for several reasons.

    1. I generally dislike ALL of Sierra's AGI games, due to not being a fan of the AGI engine in general. With the exceptions of Space Quest II and  Manhunter 2, I really don't like Sierra's AGI games (even the early KQ games).

    2. I also dislike arcade sequences in games, and the fact that you can neither skip the skimmer game nor the slot machine in the original causes it to lose points in my book.

    3. I think a big part of what colored my dislike for the original SQI was how hard it was for me and my family as a kid. To give you an idea, we NEVER got off of the surface of Kerona. We made our way to the big alien head, but I didn't learn until I replayed the game as an adult what you had to do to understand him in the first place. We never even knew we were supposed to kill the Orat, and I don't think we ever figured it out. And we played it for YEARS!

So yeah, that's my perspective. Ken Allen's soundtrack, of course, is amazing, as is Josh Mandel's script writing. And I do like the updated graphics as well. I can appreciate the artistic nature behind the AGI games, and I definitely understand the perspectives of the people who prefer the original. It's just not something that I'm a huge fan of.

In response to Troels' and Frede's most recent Back Seat Designers podcast, I suppose SQ1 VGA would be a guilty pleasure of mine. ;)

Although, I will say I still prefer SQIII and V to either version of this game.

    Talk to you later!

I can't believe I had no idea about this.  I'd been regularly checking the Andromeden Spaceport for Spaceventure news but hadn't been looking anywhere else this year.

Of course I had been around during PT's original remarks about Spaceventure and had expressed sadness about the whole affair.  I had wondered how Al Lowe could tolerate such behaviour and still be part of Replay.  In a way at least I'm glad he and Josh are out of there.

However what with the whole conviction of PT and the details surrounding it, the whole thing leaves me very sad for Al and all the Larry fans.  I always was of the opinion that the as long as Al and Josh were developing the games I'd be happy.  Now it's almost tragic that the rights to further Larry games are once again in the wrong hands.

I feel like a total Muppet for posting this on twitter in March.  No wonder there was no response :(

Say what you will about Phoenix, but at the very least they get shit done. While Jane Jensen is about to push her second release since her Kickstarter out the door, Tim Schafer is trying to come up with a way to magically let the funds for the second half of his game fall from the sky.

Maybe their technical skillz aren't quite up to scratch, but at least they appear to have work ethos and seem to know what they're doing (instead of going for the "Let's make this shit up as we go along!" approach). Which comes in handy when working on a shoestring budget.

I like VGA, but it's not a Two Guys from Andromeda game. It's a Bunch of Random Guys from Korea game. That takes some of the glitter off it. So I went with "No", even though I'm not sure you can even answer the question you posed with a no. Whatever - you sure as hell aren't getting a "Yes".

SpaceVenture hasn't finished anything yet, let alone a first half or part of a game. This doesn't bother me. Development times and money issues...I just don't care. If the game comes out and it's good then I consider it time and money well spent, both for myself and the developers. With DF, I had faith in them...faith that was misplaced. I don't like the game they ended up making. Of course, the second half could still be better, but I can't comment on it right now. All I know is that Act 1 is not what I wanted. If Act 2 is better then I'll change my tune.....I can't imagine that, though, because I just don't believe that Tim's vision of an adventure game is something I have in common with him.

As for the Two Guys, I still believe we share that common ground. At least mostly. I will continue to believe this until the game is out. I'm still all for giving people a chance.

Oh, I'm never funding anything by them again. Just from the fact that what I thought I'd be getting from them I didn't. This was my error I guess, not DF's, though. I thought I knew what kind of a game they were capable of making. The Broken Age outcome coupled with this news...no. Not again.

I should add that I don't really care about the money "issues". Developing games is not an exact science. I don't care how it's funded as long as we get the game. The problem is how the game is developed.

Of course, in this case it DOES have something to do with money I suppose.

The only complaint that I have with the parser is when it is badly implemented or incomplete. It drives me nuts if the vocabulary is so sparse that you have to play the "guess what word I am thinking of now" game with the developer. That breaks immersion. It should recognize all synonyms and variants of the word in question. I would go as far as to have it recognize all alternate spellings.

Other than that, I can see no reason that the parser could not find a place in a modern game.

There could be a whole host of reasons. It wouldn't be in keeping with the Two Guys' (and Chris's) style to do this to drum up capital investment and/or an impending release, but, yeah, could be that.

There's also nothing to suggest that it wasn't just a fan, or someone following the kickstarter story who wanted to do a very easy, very quick piece of e-mail copy and paste to get something up on the site and earn his/her $1.75 for a puff piece. There's no analysis there - it's just like one of those "interviews" the fan sites used to do back in the day.

What concerns me more than anything is the cynicism. Free thinking and critique requires questioning people in the public eye. It doesn't mean assuming that everyone is up to shenanigans and everyone is out to screw people over. Ask those questions about Scott and Mark. But don't assume it's the default position. Because if you think that's how they operate, then why give them any money in the first place? I prefer Hanlon's razor - Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

If you genuinely think all journalists, businessmen and politicians are totally corrupted and have no desire to do good, then either:

    a) do something about it and become a good journalist, businessman or politician; or
    b) find your nearest doomsday prepper colony and ask about their long-term membership programme.

No, this is in the final game. You can get it.

I have it in my inventory in my most recent playthrough. I tried to screenshot it, but whatever. It's easy enough to get.

You can go back and get another spore at any time in the game before you climb down from the log into the cave-maze. This is AFTER you've used the spore on the mean guy with the club -- you can still go back and get another spore.

At the end of the maze sequence, you tumble down to where the little pink (?) men are. If you still have a spore in your inventory, it bursts once you hit the ground.

This incapacitates Roger, and you gotta stare at your screen for a while, or maybe go pee. It will take him a while to wake up again.

When you come back, he'll be awake and he'll have an "empty spore" in his inventory that uses that graphic.

I've had similar thoughts about the viability of an episodic SpaceVenture. Are there really enough people out there who haven't already pledged to the SpaceVenture Kickstarter -- backers are essentially receiving "free" copies of the game -- who would be interested enough in the project to purchase half a game, thereby funding the second half?

I imagine it would require the first half of the game to get amazing reviews and attract a huge audience. Of course, splitting the game is likely to impact its quality (since, presumably, it wasn't designed from the ground up with a clear Part 1/Part 2 delineation in mind), which could generate negative reviews, damage sales, and decrease the likelihood of Part 2 getting the funding it needs.

Of course, this is all uninformed speculation on my part about something we have no real reason to believe is actually going to happen. I've never gone wrong before placing my faith in Mark and Scott.

Was going to draft a full reply, but then I saw this. You've clearly never watch South Park, or at the very least haven't seen it in the past 10 years. Possibly the best satire on TV at the moment. I'm a university lecturer and use it as a teaching aid. If you haven't seen it recently, I'd urge you to do so. If you have and still think it's fart jokes, then it's clearly gone straight over your head.
I'm not asking for stuff to be banned, either, which undermines that point you made.

So... meh. Boring argument is becoming even more boring. Time to bow out.

After all of the words and pages, what have we really learned here after walking away? I certainly haven't gleaned anything of value, and I read every post. Again, I find myself agreeing with Drslashvohaul the most.
