drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from JimmyTwoBucks in Walking Speed of Character? Option for Quick Pace is DesirableTo avoid making people bored, or so the Two Guys can avoid communication with people who are boring?

drdrslashvohaul reacted to JimmyTwoBucks in Something that DOES worry me...Hmm, I don't like this way of criticizing the dismissing of criticism. If someone wants to dismiss criticism, I think we should let them. Then again, maybe you are within your rights to criticize any dismissal of criticism as you see fit. Maybe I am in the wrong, with my criticism of your criticism of criticism dismissal. Something to think about. -

Apart from playing the waiting game after finishing The Last Door (the next episode is coming soon), I've been playing quite a bit of Papers, Please. Which is arguably more entertaining than it should be. Quite thought-provoking too.

drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from JimmyTwoBucks in Something that DOES worry me...Soccer is better than life itself. The rioting is just the garnish that makes it so damn tasty.
It's also good having a "world" champion that, you know, actually includes the rest of the world (and no, letting Candians play doesn't count).

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Frede in Something that DOES worry me...I might follow the World Cup. Considering the current body count, I think it's gonna be a doozy. Probably closer to Counter-Strike than usual, too.
Yeah, the PC Police is currently on a strike. Budget cuts.
Jokes about the World Cup aside, Corey Cole just posted a damn interesting comment with some fascinating historial information on the Kickstarter page. I realise the "If only it had been Ken Williams producing this..."-argument hasn't really cropped up here, but I still wanted to share this bit of insight.
Adding that to Troels' post above, I guess the morale of all this is "Shit happens". With an optional "Deal with it" postfixed ;)

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Troels Pleimert in Something that DOES worry me...I just wanted to chime in unhelpfully and thank those guys'n'gals (you know who you are) who have stepped in to bring some much needed balance to the criticisms in the latest Kickstarter update.
It's not that criticism isn't valued. I know the Space Pope reads every single thing and the team are having regular meetings to discuss these as well as game matters. No one's opinions are being ignored. But there's also something to be said for keeping your heads down and staying true to your vision, which is exactly what the Guys are doing.
To unnecessarily reiterate, sliding/motion puzzles will NOT be the bread and butter for this game. The demo is NOT to be taken as indication of the final product. The demo was a gift to us backers to show what was going on AT THAT TIME. Anyone who has been involved in a creative process knows how unnerving it is to show a work-in-progress that may have little to no bearing on what the finished product might be -- you hope that people will look at the elements individually and realize it's not a cohesive package yet, and this was exactly the case with the backer alpha demo.
Delays in projects are annoying and it's understandable that people are frustrated. Sitting on the sidelines making easy snide comments about what should and shouldn't have been anticipated is just that: easy -- and not helping anything or anyone. Everyone's hindsight is always 20/20. Real life just has a way of never turning out exactly how you planned.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to pcj in Something that DOES worry me...Gareth is right guys, SpaceVenture should be run more like FIFA. Now taking bribes for no swiping in the game.

drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from Dat Engineer in Something that DOES worry me...I think what we're all forgetting here is that the World Cup starts on Thursday. We don't have time to play a computer game.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to JimmyTwoBucks in Something that DOES worry me...True... though I think from the demo we don't have a broad enough sense of the game to really judge...
We're only really discussing three little puzzles (maybe even just two, as the door one would take 5 seconds with
fixed controls) and I think they took up way more of people's time than they normally would have, due to the controls and lack of instruction.
Also, regular adventure game inventory puzzles tend to play out over a far larger area (eg. item on screen 3 is used on screen 24, etc.),
and the demo is only a few screens, so it meant they couldn't showcase lots of inventory puzzles (especially as the demo is
part of the game and not a stand-alone demo), and so it seemed more heavily weighted towards swiping.
I think if the demo had one fewer swipe puzzle, then no one would have really made a big deal about it,
and it would be seen as just a nice little variation to add variety to the overall types of puzzles.
It's just people saw the crates AND the cart and are extrapolating that we're going to have to play a sliding puzzle
(like below) every five seconds and that they will make up the majority of the puzzles in the game:
Now, if that's true and it really is "Sliding Puzzle Venture" then sure, it'll probably get a lot of criticism for it,
but I don't think there is necessarily any reason to assume that it will be loaded with those puzzles.
And there is always the potential for hilarious uses of swipe functions too...
I think that's pretty unfair...
When people are making broad criticisms it's helpful to break it down to specifics and to provide some evidence
for the claims, so we can see what we're dealing with and make a more informed judgement.
If someone says every scene is empty and that won't make a good game, then let's look at equivalent screenshots
from games we agree are good and see how many objects are in them.
If someone hates all the swipe puzzles, let's actually break down how many there were and why people didn't actually like them
and see if there is actually cause for concern.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Frede in Something that DOES worry me...As soon as people start throwing words like "redemption" (chill out - it's just a game) into the discussion, it's a free-for-all as far as I'm concerned. I would say all those phrases are fairly common, but maybe that's just me.
And I think Gareth is spot on. SQ4CD was delivered on time with a set of dreadful timer bugs that I'm sure - despite the advancement of technology being the culprit - could've been picked up in a code review. SQ6 was delivered on time with the solution for a very complicated puzzle cut from the manual without its primary designer being asked, and a crapload of bugs. KQ7 was delivered on time with resource files that were indicating that a sizable chunk of the game had been scrapped at the last possible minute (King Graham being scrapped after he was voiced).
Truth be told, I wasn't playing these games back when they were released, but I do know a few bits of Sierra history. If you were to ask someone more knowledgeable like Troels, Rudy or Andrew, the list of examples above would probably be longer. The rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia seem to be messing an awful lot with people's heads here.

drdrslashvohaul got a reaction from JimmyTwoBucks in Something that DOES worry me...Aren't mea culpa and pro bono pretty common phrases? Like rendez-vous, coup d'etat and schedenfreude? Though to be fair, the person I've seen using them most is Fred, who's European like me. Perhaps it's a Eurotrash thing.
One thing I am seeing in the Kickstarter comments are some reasonably legitimate points about deadlines and wasted time (even if they do come wrapped in bile and insult). In that sense, I think it's a good thing that the latest update has admitted to making mistakes (without needing to go into them and inviting more uninformed crap), and then set out a broad road map for what's likely to happen over the next 12 months.
What I'm hoping is that this proves that, yes, with Ken Williams' money and whip you get your games "on time"; but with time and patience you get a much more rounded gaming experience.

drdrslashvohaul reacted to Blackthorne in Something that DOES worry me...Space Venture looks Space Quest-y as fuck!! They know what the hell they're doing; it's funny how everyone's turned into armchair game-designers over the years. I mean, I thought my armchair quarterback Uncle was bad, shouting at the players on the television when they mangle their latest sports games, but people these days in the video gaming world have taken it to an art form.
They know what they're doing; Space Venture looks cool as hell to me. I know, since it's not out, all people can do is speculate - but it's going to be funny to look back on times like these when it's done and out, isn't it?
On my end, I think things are looking good - and if they're finishing in 9 months, that is awesome. It can happen, really - sometimes you have all the stuff; it's just putting it together in the engine. And the development of the "stuff" takes longer than the programming in the engine, generally.
