Zappa was indeed the original George Lucas. Letting that man near digital equipment as he was getting ill with cancer should've been a goddamn felony.

I could never get into Sheik Yerbouti before I went out and bought the vinyl, which sounds amazing. Now it's one of my favourite albums of his, even though I think much of the humour of You Are What You Is is funnier and more clever.

The launch of the Universal 2012 reissues was such a blessing. I remember finding Hot Rats on Spotify and nearly getting a seizure when I heard the drum intro for Peaches En Regalia. I hadn't listened much to the vinyl mix, but I knew what I was hearing. It sucks that Cruising With Ruben & the Jets, Uncle Meat, the remix of Cheepnis, Zappa In New York and The Man from Utopia are all stuck with digitalitis, though.

Maybe we should start a Zappa thread before I start gushing over the 1973-1974 band ;)

I did pretty much the exact same thing - started with that album, then began getting the rest...
though I soon realized I'm more of a Captain Beefheart kinda guy, and his discography is easier to collect.

There must be something about Space Quest that attracts equally demented minds... at least as far as musical taste is concerned.
Zappa - The original George Lucas! Back in the early 2000s, after „The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life" and „Sheik Yerbouti" got me hooked, I had the utterly retarded idea to collect this guy‘s entire discography. I musta had money to burn at the time and I managed to build quite a sizeable collection. My local public library had a bunch of Zappa CDs, which were older issues than the ones I had. First thing I noticed was that the reissue of „The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life" was missing a track, „We‘re Only In It For The Money“ sounded completely different from the version I got*. Things got even more fun once I got my hand on a few old vinyls - the version of „I‘m So Cute“ on vinyl runs much longer than the CD version, which basically cuts off mid-song.

*Side note: The dreaded 80s CD re-issues of early Zappa albums do have their interesting aspects, such as a few uncensored lyrics.

So, thanks for the link I guess! Can‘t wait to find out in which ways the versions I got are inferior to previous releases! :P

On another side note: Fuck Zappa‘s widow for being an impossible cunt!

From a dollars perspective, I think everybody can understand using the name for a non-adventure game. The King's Quest name takes a boring, generic game by a random studio of nobodies and puts both on the map. It draws undue attention and interest to what would otherwise be a minor product.

King's Quest isn't even a very original setting or lore in the first place. It's the most generic of generic European-fairy-tale fantasy. The sole reason for appropriating the brand to create any random "modern" game is advertising.

But I think real grognards ought to be upset anyway. The idea is founded on a fundamental disrespect for the license: "We're not going to do anything meaningful with the license anyway, so let's go ahead and use it to boost your random title." No, the only way you'll get the kinds of games you actually want is to say that you don't want a platformer.

If you don't really want a new King's Quest that's actually an adventure game, then obviously you can slap Activision on the back for "breathing new life into the license." But really, we got more out of King's Quest when the corporate owners were ignoring it: that's when we got THREE beautiful remakes and other beautiful adventure game riffs on the license.

We wouldn't have gotten any of that if Activision were busy milking the name to create a "new, modern brand" of platformers.

You know, I'm kinda happy that Grim Fandango is just a simple remaster and not some HD Director's Cut type thing, like the Broken Sword games. But I would also have settled with the original being made available.

That said, I hope they plan to fix the now infamous bug that reportedly blocked the player from some important plot information.

Looks like Humble is selling abandonware (in the truest sense of the word) now...

And at the top tier too! Like, if you're going to be brazen enough to keep selling an unfinished beta release, might as well go all out, right guise?

Is Broussard part of the new 3D Realms as well? The guy may have had his moment of fame, but he fell from grace with Duke Forever the only thing he‘s good for now are the comments he leaves on Hardcore Gamer about how point&clicks are totally "gay" (his words, not mine) and tweeting gems like "lol can‘t raise my arm and my speech‘s slurred haha I mighta had a stroke lol" (I wish I was kidding about that one, but sadly I‘m not.)

I‘m tempted about getting the Anthology though. Too bad it‘s $40 now and they don‘t make physical copies, the cover artwork looks absolutely awesome and I‘d gladly cough up some dough for a proper, DRM-free physical copy.

Oh well, I‘ll definitely grab a copy of Bio Menace for free. That one‘s by far my favourite from the old Apogee catalogue. I mean, the protagonist‘s name is Snake Logan.

    SNAKE LOGAN.

Let that sink in for a while.

He has a mullet and a mustache and he wears a garish green shirt.

It also features the most over-the-top gore of all the old 3D Realms sidescrollers, with badly mutilated bodies strewn all over the place. And still the monsters in the game look like something straight out of a Pixar movie. It‘s one of the most apeshit insane things I ever played (and also one of the most unduly forgotten games) and it has a rockin‘ soundtrack. Do yourselves a favour and go play Bio Menace!

KQ5 is the worst offender for dead ends. Seeing as you've already passed that, the worst is behind you. KQ3 has a timer but for long sequences. You must accomplish tasks while the wizard is away pr sleeping. There's a timer on the status line and it's easy enough to figure out how long his trips/naps take. There aren't any bad timer areas, though, like you're referring to.

KQ7....I personally don't like it at all. Try it. Some love it.
