  3. To run the jar file you need to install a Java Runtime Environment. This will allow you to the jar file as an executable for your computer. You can download it from here http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp?locale=en (Don't extract the jar file, it won't work) The advantage of jar files is that if you can run the program on any platform that supports the Java Runtime Environment. With executable files, you need to recompile each file for each platform that you want to run it under.
