Arcade sequences in new Guys from Andromeda game.
Akril replied to Chrono's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
I'd certainly welcome an arcade sequence.* I thought they acted as sort of a "palette-cleanser" in the SQ games, and the sequences that weren't essential to progressing in the game (like Ms. Astro Chicken) gave the player something to do if they had gotten hopelessly stuck in the puzzle-solving department. *Although, I first played the CD version of SQ4 on Windows 3.11, so I didn't come to know the horror of the Skate-O-Rama timer issues until years later...so I may be a little biased. -
Ah, I see what you did there. (Y) Ohhhh... Now I get it. No problem -- it happens. (Thanks again, guys! It's good to be doing this sort of thing again.)

[*:1rf4ake0]Infamous releases SQ2VGA. [*:1rf4ake0]Team VSB releases Vohaul Strikes Back, the first fully animated fan sequel to the Space Quest saga. [*:1rf4ake0]Chris (Datadog) releases Incinerations, a game that's just too kick-ass for words. [*:1rf4ake0]The Two Guys reunite after 15 years of not speaking to each other and announce they're making a new game. [*:1rf4ake0]The old VSB team kiss and make up, on this very forum, no less. [*:1rf4ake0]I reconnect with Daniel Stacey (Cadbury Wookie) after 12 years of estrangement. [*:1rf4ake0]Akril starts drawing Space Quest fan-art again. These events all happened within the space of a few months, completely independently from each other. Seriously, is someone spiking the water supply? Well, I have been changing medications recently... Not to shoot down a perfectly legitimate joke, but I wouldn't say that all of these events are entirely unconnected from each other -- I played VSB and SQInc and I was inspired... ...about 3.5 months later. Oh, and by the way, contrary to the 4/16/12 post here, I didn't create The Many Deaths of Roger Wilco -- that was entirely Jeysie's creation. I'm the other female SQ fan.

Yep, it's been a while, but I suddenly felt like drawing some Space Quest fan art a couple weeks ago. I got most of this picture done, but then I started to lose interest. Then I heard the announcement about the Two Guys... I finished it pretty soon after that.

It's official: The Two Guys from Andromeda are back
Akril replied to Troels Pleimert's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
Oh...my...gosh... LordKat was/is a member of The SubSpace Channel!? I've been watching his videos on TGWTG for years, yet somehow I never realized this. Crazy... -

I'm... I'm just going to sit here in stunned silence for about fifteen minutes... (But I think I've found the perfect song to celebrate this remarkable turn of events.) -
I'm growing convinced that even though it's been 17 years since SQ6 was released, it may still be many more years before every single injoke/reference/cameo in the SQ series is documented -- every time it seems like there's nothing more to be found, something gets found.

...when I realised that Karm Treebis* is an anagram of Mark Seibert's name. Not really that big or impressive a discovery, but I didn't see this mentioned on the SQ Wiki and I don't recall it ever being brought up before, so...yeah. *As in "Successful People Managing Techniques by Karm Treebis" ("Funny," the narrator says, "It's empty."), one of the disks Roger finds in Nigel and Singent's apartment.

Oh dear, what have I done... Well, I'd say that pretty much blew my theory out of the water. Maybe Vohaul just had an unfortunate tanning booth accident while Roger was exploring Labion (either that or he was experimenting with chameleon DNA). (And Mad_C33 pretty much said exactly what I was going to say about Vohaul projecting whatever physical depiction pf himself he wanted while he controlling the supercomputer.) And true, none of these details really matter...but they're still fun to discuss (especially after several years of inactivity on the SQ front). And I'd definitely take the "Vohaul was always blue" idea over the "Sludge is a clone of Slash, Elmo Pug is a clone of Sludge, Quirk is Sludge's nephew and Sharpei is possibly Sludge's sister" plot pretzel that the SQC comes up with. Wow -- very cool! (Not to be a complete buzzkill, but I couldn't help but be reminded of this article on Cracked.com I read a few months ago. Seems like a case of great minds thinking alike to me. ;) )

I haven't actually read the SQ Companion, but considering my reaction to most of the material in it that I've found on the SQ Wiki (mentally shouting "Oh, come on!" at the monitor), I'm not sure if I ever will. Having every single humanoid villain in the series be related to or cloned from Sludge Vohaul is eyeroll-inducing. It's almost implying that every character is evil because they are related to Vohaul, and it cheapens Vohaul himself as well. Roger himself is kind of cheapened as well in the SQC, which says that his father's side of the family is essentially an unbroken line of men (as well as one woman) all named Roger Wilco due to a tradition started by his distant ancestors. (Oh yeah, and Roger's ancestors lived on 20th century Earth and were inspired to name their son Roger Wilco because of their love of the Space Quest series, which was created by the Two Guys from Andromeda that the Roger Wilco brought to 20th century Earth [because that black hole actually took him to the distant past], so now the Roger Wilco has to do what he did in the Space Quest games otherwise there will be a huge paradox and agh my brain) I actually liked the decision to make Vohaul's entire family blue. It was cheesy, but in a good way. (Although I just had a thought...considering how Vohaul's skin changed to a regular flesh tone when Roger encountered him for the second time in SQ2 (both on the monitors in Roger's ship and in person) makes me wonder if there was some weird lighting in the room where Roger first encountered him that just made his skin appear blue in SQ2...hmm...)

This story...I don't know why, but this is the funniest thing I've read in weeks. This really deserves a dramatic reading. (Huh...I don't think I ever knew we had a Bard's Forum either. No surprise, considering how hard it was to find the thing.)

Ugh...I thought I replied to this thread the day before yesterday, but apparently I didn't. Ironically, one of the things I was going to say then was that some of the reasons I didn't feel capable of making a SQ fangame (short or otherwise) was because I lacked any genuinely fresh ideas for a plot, settings or puzzles to pad out the game to a decent length (that and the fact that the area of sci-fi I'm most familiar with is short stories published prior to 1975. I'm not that familiar with anything in another medium and/or beyond that date). I like the "group game" idea, though I'm not sure if I'd be up to participating. Some people on the AGS forums participated in a similar idea where the goal was to have a large number of artists, animators, musicians, programmers, etc. all working on a short game with each person not doing much more than an hour of work each. The average amount of work for each team member turned out to be much more than one hour and the game took a few months to complete, but it was still an interesting experiment to watch.
-
You're welcome. I don't know if I'll ever make a SQ fangame of any length, but it was great to get a chance to at least do concept art for SQInc. I think I'm happiest with the way Greg's design turned out.
-
Wow...this really is turning out to be an unusually eventful year for a community centered around a series whose last official installment was more than a decade ago. It's great to see you here again, Troels. I'll definitely be adding your site to my bookmarks.

Woah. Makes me wish Jeysie were here now. VSB didn't really feel like a LucasArts game for me -- it's just that I was running into so many Monkey Island and/or generic pirate references that I was starting to think, "Okay, there technically were pirates in SQIII, but this is getting ridiculous..." I agree -- I shed no tears over the lack of "walking dead" scenarios. I may have played a lot of Sierra games with dead ends when I was younger, but these days, I don't really have the patience for 'em. True -- there really weren't many conversations in the early Sierra games, and if you were talking to another character, the conversation was usually one-sided, with the occasional "You say [whatever]" narration. Still, I didn't mind the dialogue system in VSB -- I think it really helps flesh out the characters. (I also admit to preferring the text-over-character's-head speech as well.)
-
You're very welcome! And yes -- I died many times during that game, but I'm sure there's still dozens of other fatal scenarios that I've missed. Hmmm... I'll throw out a fair warning about SQInc, then. I've sort of grown addicted to making game cinematics.Don't worry -- judging by the trailers I've seen for SQInc so far, I doubt I'll have any complaints about those cutscenes. (Besides, with the cutscene-to-puzzle ratio in my games, I don't really have much room to criticize.) I lost count of the cameos/references/spoofs in VSB long ago, but I'd say that their number could definitely rival that of SQ6 (the most reference-rich game in the series).* *I admit that the amount of LucasArts references in VSB was a bit rich for my taste -- but to each their own.

I would begin this post with enthusiastic squeals of delight, but instead, I think I'll try to keep my composure as I write this: This game is awesome in so many ways: it's a SQ fangame (haven't seen one of those in a long time), it's a full-length game that's padded out with puzzles rather than cutscenes (though the cutscenes are spectacular as well), it's hi-res 2D (have there been any hi-res 2D Sierra fangames besides this one?), it's a sequel instead of a remake (no offense to the people working on the remakes!), and perhaps most importantly, it has been completed. With all the fangames over the years that have either fallen by the wayside or have become inexorably tangled in legal issues, it's amazing that a game of this quality should see the light after all this time. It's also great to see a lot of old faces from the SubSpace Channel showing up here. Not to mention that the release of SQII+ and the promise of SQInc in the (hopefully) near future pushes this whole thing from awesome to downright surreal. (And yet, for some inexplicable reason, I have yet to walk Roger over the edge of that cliff near the beginning in order to witness that death scene that was always cracking me up in I don't know what's wrong with me.)

Ah geez, I'm sorry about that. I guess it really has been a while...

That's a fun little video you've made, olzen! Nice job, and thanks for sharing!
-
Wow, thanks for pointing that out to me, Max!

I didn't mean for it as a reference to you. I don't remember exactly when I came up with it. I was trying to think of the most over-the-top, macho, "actiony" name possible for a character, and "Sledge Rockfist" was the name I decided to use. Thank you. There might be a third game, but it may be a long time before that happens. I don't have any real plot ideas yet. Yes -- the linearity was one of several things criticized in the first game I tried to correct in the sequel. Making a non-linear game was pretty hard, but I think it was worth it. Thanks again, Sledgy!

Sorry I'm late to this thread, but I wanted to thank Datadog for plugging my latest project, and I also want to mention that the bug he mentioned (which prevented completion of the game) has been fixed.

You're very welcome, Troels! Long time no see, and it's nice to hear that some of those ancient games will see the light of day again. Sometimes it really pays off to be an insufferable packrat. :D

I had a look at my hard drive, and I actually found a copy of the Eureka Trash Pickup ZIP file that's been on my computer for about ten years! I tried extracting the files in it, and it worked. Hopefully this means the EXE will work as well. Eureka Trash Pickup

Late reply, but you can download SCI Viewer here. As far as I know, it's the latest version.
