It's odd, cause while some people are saying that we've got a more LucasArts-like game, others have commended us for preserving the Space Quest-feel. But hey, who am I to argue? Those are hardly the worst comments we could get :)
-
Sweet - now the ball is rolling!
-
No, you're right there, Brandon. We had somewhat high hopes as well, but I guess we're at least five years too late. Oh, well. At least our games might help non-Space Quest fans get into the series. I'm certainly grateful for the feedback we've been getting, and your remake seem to be doing really well too. Deservedly, I might add :)
-
Yeah, thankyou for the kind words, Akril :) And trust me - Roger falling off the cliff isn't the only nice death scene in there!
-
As I've just written on the AGS boards, I'm really looking forward to playing it. Congratulations, guys. Your KQ3 remake was really good, so I'm sure you've done a great job with this :)

Hey, Sam. I can assure you that there's no bitterness on my part anymore. Partly because I have to admit that you leaving acrimoniously also had a lot to do with my own immaturity, and with ineffective team structuring. So there's no reason for me to not forgive you for that. It appears you've moved on as well, and that's great. There may have been some fairly ugly stuff since your departure, but you know... the game is out there now, and I prefer to dwell on that. If people want to Google up all the other crap, it's there for all to see. As for the quality of the game, Chris is right. If I have to be frank, we've had three different VSB's in production since the beginning. You'll find a lot of stuff has changed, but I honestly think this iteration is the best possible one. At least, not a single diaper is being changed in this one  You still have a credit, mind you, and I think not giving you that would be unfair. Despite all the changes, a lot of the structure and a lot of the pre-production ideas still came from you, and I don't want to pretend that doesn't matter. So yeah, download it and give it a spin and uninstall it again if you don't like it. That's perfectly fine. As long as there's no more pointless resentment, I'm happy. Slightly off-topic... are you still working on "Outer Edge of Earnon"? How's that coming along?

More like 9.5 years, actually  Anyway, like pcj, I hope you'll enjoy the game. It's quite overwhelming to finally be able to release it and hopefully give Space Quest a new lease of life. I also want to thank everyone who has contributed to the game and supported us, even when we were acting like a group of dorks :) Oh, and do feel free to join us on our forums. Comments, criticism, hint requests, bug reports and nonsensical banter are all very welcome.

What'd you like to present to Scott Murphy at his birthday?
Frede replied to Sledgy's topic in Starcon Academy
I heard he doesn't really want to check out the fan projects, but should he change his mind, he'll be able to take his pick, yeah :) -
Good to see you around on a forum again, Pstonie. It's been a while! Thankyou! Feels great to finally have a game that's ready for testing. It's definitely the first completed non-remake SQ fangame of this scale. Not sure how it fares in comparison to other fan projects, but I think it's safe to say it's definitely among the bigger AGS-games ever completed as well. And without spoiling anything, VSB and Incinerations would probably also be the first fangames that share a new continuity. I'm not sure which of those two games is the larger one, but without tooting anyone's horn, being a Space Quest-fan will be getting more exciting shortly :)

Well, it finally happened. "Space Quest: Vohaul Strikes Back" has hit the beta phase. I'm just going to repost pcj's post from the Adventure Game Studio forums below. -- We've been slowly working on VSB on and off for about 9 years now and it's finally entering beta stage. It's gone through several different iterations but we've come up with something awesome. If you don't know what VSB is, here's a brief plot intro: Roger Wilco and Beatrice Wankmeister are in the middle of an important conversation when they are interrupted by an apeman sent by a reincarnation of Vohaul. Roger soon discovers that he must once again stop Vohaul from destroying the galaxy. We're looking for a few beta testers to help iron out any last few bugs before release. We ask for serious testers only, we want to get all the bugs out of the way so everyone can enjoy a bug-free game. Prior experience with beta testing is a plus. A couple of screenshots: Any comments/questions are also welcome. Thank you. -- Even though it's already noted above, let me stress that we're not just looking for people who want to be the first ones to play a new Space Quest-game; you're going to get that chance soon. We're looking for someone who can be serious, dedicated and have the time to spare. Tell us why you think you will be good for this job, and we'll do our best to respond to your applications as fast as possible. As always, you are also welcome to register at our forum. The place isn't as dead as it looks

I've gotten these games the internet way several times, but a couple of years ago, I decided to pick up all of the 2006 Sierra collections, even though they're simple rush jobs. I wouldn't recommend getting those now that you can also get them on GOG (the LSL collection being the frustrating exception), but I certainly would recommend that you buy the games. Collector's patches should work on the GOG version as well. That's a guess - I don't know for certain - but GOG games for DOSBox are actually very easy to mess with. If you consider yourself a fan, you have to own them legally, I think. Back in the day, you could excuse yourself with the fact that these games were long out-of-print. Bidding on an overpriced SQ collection on eBay may be fine for a diehard, but it's a little bit too much for a casual fan who just wants to play these games. Now you have a choice and considering you seem to be addicted to all things Space Quest, I'd say it's worth it.
-
It is - we're just keeping a little quiet about it. But I really hope it's going to be released this year. Maybe early next year, before the end of the world  I also agree on different types of humour for different countries - it's made a lot more complicated by the net as well!

the_wilco was a guy who trolled Jess' old forum, the SubSpace Channel. His English was terrible, you never really knew what he wanted to post, but he kind of belonged there! Nobody ever found out who he was either. I honestly think you're a little obsessed, Sledgy. Many have been that before you, but the heart of the matter is... these are just games. Life goes on without SQ7. And again, you're gonna get some awesome SQ games soon. As for your jokes and memes, well... you gotta ask yourself whether this is right place to keep posting that. People here aren't that serious, but for me, there's a long way from wrecking "Space Quest" stuff in MS Paint to something I think is really funny. I don't get this "Full Destroyer"-meme at all, and I don't think I'm alone there. That style of humour was just never that popular with this particular community... You're probably a cool guy, but I honestly think you should put a little more thought into your posts. Believe me, I should know; English isn't my first language either, and when I look back at some of my first posts at the Subspace Channel (or here), I really cringe. It takes some effort from you, yeah, but you'll find people here to be worth that.
-
I don't think people here are "very serious." Your current jokes just aren't very funny, to be a little blunt. Chris is right in that other thread; you want to see "Space Quest" live on? Support the current fan projects or do the effort to establish a proper project instead of endlessly raving on about a project that got cancelled years ago. "Incinerations" and VSB are both well on their way, and SQ2+ and "Outer Edge of Earnon" are looking really cool as well. Trust me - all of these projects are going to do a lot for the franchise. Mind you, you don't owe us fangame developers anything, but just a little patience and respect would come a long way. I'm sure the guys from the other projects would agree.
-
... I don't think I want to play it. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
-
Don't sweat it, Brandon. It ain't easy to compete against the absolutely mindblowing SQ4.5's and 7's consisting of ripped ressources. At least your project was mentioned :D
-
You left out VSB. Thanks. Guess the stuff I'm working on and testing at the moment doesn't exist. Oh well. Thankyou for telling me.
-
Oh, nothing to do with your English, man. I guess I just don't find 'em very funny. That's my loss, really. Make no mistake, Sledgy - it's nice to see someone being so active around Space Quest again :D
-
I think I can say somewhat safely that I don't get it... :P
-
True. The animation issues aren't occuring in DOSBox. As clunky as setting the cycles can be, I'm at least grateful that I'm not forced to use MoSlo or similar programs anymore. As for the audio, I do have a crappy on-board soundcard, so that's probably the cause of any audio glitches. At least the games actually work in both emulators!
-
While I'm not gonna disagree with Collector (whose patches are definitely brilliant, I might add), one feature of ScummVM I truly appreciate is that you don't have to adjust the CPU cycles. Finding the right number of cycles in DOSBox can be quite a pain. Plus, while the audio is indeed lacking in some departments (the AdLib emulation isn't as good), I always get quite a few audio glitches in DOSBox no matter what the prebuffer is set to while the audio works a lot more smoothly in ScummVM. And again, there are no conf-files, so configuration is a lot simpler. Again, I don't have an agenda here. I just think the ScummVM team deserve some credit for coming up with an emulator that's - in my humble opinion - a lot more streamlined. Even if DOSBox is still a more "complete" solution.
-
You're welcome! Glad I could be of assistance :P
-
Thanks! Now, seeing as the issue is likely with your output mode (the line which reads output=surface), try experimenting with that. I'm using opengl on my laptop and that tends to work out fine with these games. You may want to try out all of the available options as listed in the beginning of the file, though. I haven't actually experienced the exact glitch you're describing, but if I remember correctly, surface-mode has also been kinda glitchy for me in the past. As an alternate option, if you can't get this to work properly at all, get ScummVM. As the name implies, this project used to be an emulator for running LucasArts' SCUMM-engine adventure games natively in Windows. Since then, support has been extended to include a ton of Sierra games - virtually all of the AGI, SCI0 and SCI1 games. It's a lot less clunky than DOSBox in terms of configuration, and it includes some pretty nifty features. Among them, decent MT-32 emulation if you're in possession of the original ROMs from the device. And you should have no graphics issues with it. It's a pretty mind blowing emulator, though you'll still need to use DOSBox for some Sierra's later games like SQ6. Good luck :P
-
Hmm... I reckon the Steam collection uses DOSBox like the last collections released by Activision. You certainly wouldn't be able to run the games on Windows 7 otherwise. Is there a file named dosbox.conf in your game folder? Try posting the contents of that. I'm mainly interested in the "render ="-line in the [sdl]-section as this sounds like the graphics mode DOSBox is set to isn't working properly with your system.
-
But... I didn't make no video! I think you're messing up the ancient usernames there, Akril :P
