Viscera Cleanup Detail is a game about a janitor cleaning up the space station after an alien attack. Here is how the creators discribe it:

"Disaster! An alien invasion and subsequent infestation have decimated this facility. Many lives were lost, the facility was ruined and the aliens were unstoppable. All hope was lost until one survivor found the courage to fight back and put the aliens in their place!

It was a long and horrific battle as the survivor dueled with all manner of horrific life-forms and alien mutations, but our hero won out in the end and destroyed the alien menace! Humanity was saved!

 

Unfortunately, the alien infestation and the heroic efforts of the courageous survivors have left rather a mess thoughout the facility. As the janitor, it is your duty to get this place cleaned up.

So grab your mop and roll up your sleeves, this is gonna be one messy job.

No, I meant "this sounds familiar" as in "this reminds me of that time Roger Wilco woke up in the janitor's closet aboard the Arcada and the Sariens had slaughtered all his crewmates." No bell ringing on your end? ;)

This thing is a work of genius! They're faithfully retaining every single massacre-in-outer-space-FPS-cliché in the book (the levels look like they were lifted straight out of Doom 3) while replacing the fast-paced action with the most menial chores imaginable. And oddly enough, it works! Not just on the subversion level, this thing is actually fun to play.

I watched some of the video - this thing is brilliant! Just watching someone else clean up is addictive.

Just found an alpha gameplay trailer for an indie game called "Routine". Aside from being smitten with one of the most nondescript titles anyone could possibly come up with, this looks quite promising. Like "Viscera Cleanup Detail" minus the janitorial duties.
