Dude, he has boobs. Didn't you notice? That should blur the lines a little bit. VSB has implied male orangutan nudity, courtesy of Rodney spreading 'em off-screen. I'm not sure if that's a good thing in your eyes, but it's there.

SpaceVenture Update #82 (Split from Criticism thread)
Frede replied to billybob476's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
Damn, you should totally have done that! Part of me was a little bit disappointed back when I initially played SQ2VGA because I had been expecting SQ2+. Not a complete departure, but definitely more of a redux. Of course, you made a really good faithful remake, so it's not as if the decision to go for that was bad at all. Which was also what I realised after spending some time with it. You more than accomplished that goal. But a whole new game path would've been really interesting. Especially considering what AGDI were able to do with the hollow shell that was KQ2. As far as fan remakes go, that one is still the benchmark, in my opinion. -

That, or flatter your way past the bouncer. It's a nice little setup because it hints at the different paths you have to choose from later on. I've personally gone for the wits approach in most playthroughs, though it's awfully tempting to have Indy say "Let me in, you Darwinian nightmare". -
I'm obviously insanely proud of my work on Vohaul Strikes Back, but would have go with Incinerations as my favourite. Chris made just about one of the best non-commercial games ever with that. SQ2VGA and Pledge Quest are honourable mentions. The former is a great love letter to SQ2 and the latter demonstrate that you can make a great game even under very tight constraints. Bigger does always automatically mean better. Least favourite would have to SQIV.5. I've actually never played it, but I hate games that use ripped resources. Derivative art is fine, but there is a line. Especially if you try to pass off your "work" as something original afterwards. It's my least favourite to a degree where I will never play it. Only bitch about it.

The thing about SQ3 is that all remake efforts have been cursed from the get-go. Okay, maybe not Infamous' attempt, but the SQ3VGA projects I've seen rise and fall have usually been less than impressive. Either they were gaussian blur-fests where someone had just dragged Mark's original artwork into Photoshop and applied some colour tinkering and blurring to make it look "newer", or they'd have overly garish artwork that would merely have been painted over Mark's originals. And never with any sort of gameplay expansion. Same game - only with new audio and new visuals. The problem with SQ3 is that it looks great to begin with. Mark really got the most out of those 16 colours. Unless the developers of a remake wanted to really play around with the boundaries, there'd be nothing to gain from a VGA remake. Yes, you'd have 240 more colours, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? An SQ3 remake would have to be a well-done overhaul rather than a new paint job if I were to feel something had been gained by remaking it. Infamous Quests could get a way with a - mostly - 1:1 remake of SQ2 because there wasn't much to work with to begin with, in terms of the visuals. With SQ3, it's as if - because the original is near-perfect - no one really wants to replace the original aesthetics. Just arbitrarily make them "better". Which I'd argue is exactly the approach that'll never lead to a successful SQ3 remake. I want to see the backgrounds from new angles, a bigger Garbage Freighter, new planets, etc. Don't just give me what the Two Guys released back in 1987 with a new coat of paint. You'd be doomed to fail because the old coat of paint is still damn impressive.

Paul Trowe criticism on Kickstarter update
Frede replied to Troels Pleimert's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
I do agree, but I also agree with Steve that Paul should not get a pass on this. Paul is the CEO of a game company while the moderators are volunteers. It's incredibly difficult to hold the latter accountable for rotten behaviour, but the former is in a position where you just don't get to pull crap like this. I still think this should be handled in the most civil manner possible. But that said, it's too dangerous to just go "Eh, it happened. It won't happen again". We did last time around, after Paul's apology, and the Kickstarter sabotage quietly went on in the background. And clearly it was just a matter of time before Paul came out of his hole to spread more nastiness. There's a difference between taking the high road and being overly forgiving. Even if people were acting like martyrs, which I don't think they are, Paul doesn't deserve the latter. We thought he did the first time around, but now the ship has sailed and it's borderline proven that Paul will betray one's trust and abuse it to hurt other projects. I still firmly support the petition and/or joint letter that has been proposed in here by several posters. As far as I know, this is still happening, which is a good thing. Because if you've been following this closely, including the Kickstarter sabotage problems, you'll know that this is absolutely neccessary. -

It has been suggested before that people alert other games to this whole situation on Steam, but I, too, agree that it may be going overboard. Well, I don't have a problem with it if it's not an organised effort; Mvalnor is simply linking to information that is publicly available and who am I to prevent gamers from boycotting it on their own? I certainly don't intend to buy it - I'll just have to show my support for Al and Josh some other way. But generally, I rest my case; let's focus on SpaceVenture positivity and leave the actual petitioning/letter-writing to the people who got burnt. Speaking of SpaceVenture... who's looking forward to hearing how things are really going? :D -

VideoPad sounds extremely useful. Thanks for telling your tales of woe. I have Premiere lying around. Don't ask me why. But as far as using it, I'm an idiot. Sometimes, you just need the really simple stuff. Something like Movie Maker or iMovie. The old versions of both, mind. Keep up the good work! -

I guess he's finally learned a lesson about Josh-tice. Yeah, okay, I'll show myself out. -
Do you think SQ would have followed continuity?
Frede replied to SteveHNo96's topic in Starcon Academy
Well, the bad thing about time travel as a sci-fi plot device is that you might wind up painting yourself into a corner because you've established something that has to happen. On the other hand, "time travel stuff" works as an excuse for just about any retcon or plot hole you can run into, so I think the issue is two-fold. I can easily imagine future Space Quests finding a way of dealing with this to take the series out of the predefined path in which Roger has to be on Estros by SQ10. In fact, start off with Roger breaking the space-time continuum by accident and you've got a game that practically writes itself. Take a look at Space Quest: Incinerations if you want a look at a Space Quest fangame that treats time travel in exactly the right way. Heck. Take a look at it anyway; it's a great game. -

Spoke to Jeroen about this. I'm in favour of a petition or one single well-written letter signed by a number of fans. I'll probably relegate myself to the background of affairs as I think I'm spending way much time on TroweGate right now. It's becoming a bit too much and I want to gear down and take a deep breath. But I definitely support the initiative. -

Maybe if we do a joint letter. I think mail bombing them is a bit extreme. But you will have my signature in a petition or in a letter for sure. -
Paul Trowe criticism on Kickstarter update
Frede replied to Troels Pleimert's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
Yeah, I can understand if those of you who have been screwed over Trowe wish to contact Codemasters, but that's something you have to do separately from the SpaceVenture promotional effort. As passioned as I am about adventure game developers not being dicks, I didn't back the Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded Kickstarter. It'd be wrong for me to contact Codemasters because it'd seem like I'm only in it for the mischief and ultimately, it may reflect negatively upon Guys From Andromeda and the fan projects I have been involved in. And I don't want that to happen. So, by all means, I think you should organise yourselves. Intendant S, DrJ, cavefish, Fronzel Neekburm, Irishmile, etc. Everyone who got the short end of the stick and want to see their beloved Larry in more capable hands. But for a lot of SpaceVenture fans, the discussion probably ends here as it'd just have too dire consequences if we followed you down that road. Those of us need to find the positivity and prepare ourselves mentally for GFA's October 16 update. -
Paul Trowe criticism on Kickstarter update

For what it's worth, I have it on good, Andromedan authority that Paul was lying through his teeth back when he claimed he'd been in talks with both Scott Murphy and Ken and Roberta Williams about the Space Quest and King's Quest franchises. He hadn't actually called any of them. So tread lightly; Ken has not cut any sort of deal with Paul about King's Quest and at no point has he considered doing so. -

http://www.adventure...php?newsid=6394 The story has hit this German site. Google Translate is probably mangling it, but they seem to be retelling what went on in a very objective manner rather than commenting on it or jumping to their own conclusions. Paul Trowe criticism on Kickstarter update
Frede replied to Troels Pleimert's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
I do hope Al eventually gets to remake LSL2R, preferably under another banner. I criticised the original game on Twitter at one point because of its inhuman difficulty and Al actually took time to reply, basically saying that he agreed and wished he could get to do things better. LSL1R didn't really need a remake to the same degree. So it's kinda frustrating if the Reloaded-series ends this way because of the self-destructive behaviour of one guy. I suppose all we can do is wait and see. Blackthorne's words really resonate with me. I'm done. Trowe is a dead fish in the water, so now it's all about supporting the Two Guys on the road to SpaceVenture. -

That image made me pull out the most crooked, sarcastic smile ever. I raise with this. I don't think sharing content that's publicly available is unethical, but the context sure makes all the difference! Personally, I can think of many other words than "LOVE", but some of you out there may have children looking over your shoulders. -

Well, a huge difference is that you've got all the proof you need at your disposal. And I don't think it's petty if the sentiment is "Value your volunteers and don't be evil!" rather than "Down with Paul Trowe!".
