Wow, this looks incredible. I'm going to back it. I live in southern California, so I could easily check it out. I'm just a little confused about the goal. Only $82,000? To create a permanent museum? Are they going to lease a property in Hollywood? I don't know anything about development or construction, but, for comparison, supposedly the renovation work being done on the two Equinox sports clubs in West LA and Orange County is costing 15 million, and all I've seen there is new wall tile and flooring so far. So I can't imagine how $82,000 could even come close to funding a seemingly major development like this. Or maybe I'm missing something or have the wrong idea about this? Also, when this thing opens, I promise I will try to go on the first weekend and will dress like Roger Wilco. Maybe I'll try to get the attention of some reporter so I'll get on tv and will be able to say something Space Quest-related.

That would be fun. Private message me and we can exchange info. I haven't spoken with someone about space quest outside of an online forum in quite awhile.

Political correctness and feminism
PurpleTentacle replied to PurpleTentacle's topic in The Rocket Bar
Regarding the politically correct hierarchy and where different groups rank, this new video (not satire) helpfully explains which group belongs at the bottom, where this group of people is expected wallow in supposed deserved guilt: http://youtu.be/2HruwVGO-20 Racist, anti-male propaganda, you say? Goodness, no. It's really about "equality." -
Very pleasantly surprised with Tesla Effect. Am really enjoying it. Definitely recommended. Love the atmosphere.

Aren't there legal issues involved with selling this? I mean, this can't be legal, can it?

Someone mentioned Roseanne in another thread, and it made me think of this: http://twitchy.com/2014/04/21/neuter-boys-at-birth-humanitarian-roseanne-imparts-more-wisdom-on-the-masses/ Wanted to mention it there, but it was suggested that related posts be included here. Not gaming-related, but relevant to what had been discussed there. Imagine if a celebrity had advocated all baby girls undergo female genital mutilation. I believe there would have been a greater response. -
I don't like the idea of telling anyone to shut up just because you don't agree with them. Using the tired "bigot!" and "racist!" and "sexist!" charges against people who don't agree with you is often just a way of attempting to silence/censor others and render their points not worthy of consideration. It's a way to toxify people.

Troels, start with this excellent book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0684849577?pc_redir=1399183830&robot_redir=1

I thought Steve's comments were excellent. Obviously he is referring to a politically correct double standard; for example, why has "anti-sexism" become anti-male? The politically correct standards are not applied equally. And who gets to determine someone's "intent" behind a comment, anyway? Are we reading minds here?

SpaceVenture: Episodic or Full-Game release?
PurpleTentacle replied to PurpleTentacle's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
I am fine with a cliffhanger. It's a good way get people excited for the next game. Of course , I would prefer the cliffhanger at the end of a full game. But, really, I'd just be happy with a good, quality, fun product regardless. I could even live with an episodic release or with the game broken up, though it wouldn't be my preference. -
I definitely wouldn't give Moebius and its developer Phoenix Online Studios a high rating. But out of respect for the Two Guys and the fact that they probably wish only the best for Jensen and other Sierra veterans, I wouldn't feel right taking apart Moebius too much on this forum, though I agree with Fronzel. Anyway, do I see myself donating more money for Phoenix Online Studios projects in the future? Doesn't look likely.

Very nice! I think I vaguely remember my friend showing me something like this at one point. By the way, I hope you don't get in trouble for monetizing the video. Maybe you didn't mean to click to enable ads. Also, every time I hear that music... sigh... it does things to me. Love the music in that game.

I would be interested to check it out on YouTube.

Playing Sierra games on iPad or iPhone
PurpleTentacle replied to PurpleTentacle's topic in The Rocket Bar
I think I'm stupid or something. I can't get it to work. I finally figured out that I needed to turn off my pop-up blocker, and then it got me to this point... but I don't know what to do from here: (see attachment) I'm out in the middle of nowhere right now on the road at night waiting for the AAA tow because I blew a tire and I don't have a spare. Thought it would be a good time to brush up on the Sierra classics. -

Not sure if this has been discussed, but I believe it is an important consideration. What is something many of us do as soon as we start certain adventure games? Turn up the character's walking speeds, right? Who wants to sit and wait while a character lumbers from one side of the screen to the next, over and over? I was recently playing Moebius (disappointing product from a developer who apparently struggled technically to make the game work, but no need to get into that here), and I found it annoying how slowly the main character walks around and performs many actions. Even in tense scenes, where the character's safety is at risk, he still strolls around as if he hasn't a care in the world. My suggestion for SpaceVenture: definitely give us the option to make the playable character run/jog whenever we want, rather than simply walk.

Playing Sierra games on iPad or iPhone

What version of iOS are you using? I am using 7.1 and it's not working for me. Hmmm... I have to keep trying. Will also try it on my iPad later. I want this to work!!! :-) -
Political correctness and feminism
PurpleTentacle replied to PurpleTentacle's topic in The Rocket Bar
It's intimidation when highly-damaging smears like "sexist" and "racist" are used to punish those who don't comply with politically correct demands. These are unique, poisonous slurs that stick, whether they are being used fairly or not. Someone posted a link to a EuroGamer review that employs this tactic. To avoid the punishment, content developers will self-censor. In this way, politically correct demands (which favor particular groups over others), and their accompanying threat of harm, chill free expression. People are being bullied into avoiding particular speech because certain other people don't like what is being expressed. Some fancy themselves politically correct warriors for a better world, condemning perceived objectionable racist or sexist material wherever they see it - and some people can find it anywhere! However, the standards are applied differently, depending on the group in question and its status in the latest p.c. hierarchy. One of the reasons political correctness is so dangerous is that it can lead people, not just game developers, to fear speaking openly and honestly. Luckily, enough people are recognizing the insidious and absurd nature of the neverending politically correct grievance mongering and are calling it out for what it is. Game developers, make the games you want to make, the way you want to make them, and don't worry about running afoul of the language police. If they throw a hissy fit, wear it as a badge of honor... and hope enough fair-minded people come to your defense if that happens. -
Has anyone here done this? http://www.padgadget.com/2013/07/26/padgadgets-flashback-friday-sierra-on-line-adventure-games-on-the-ipad/ Does it only work on iPad? I haven't been able to get it to work on the iPhone.

Political correctness and feminism
PurpleTentacle replied to PurpleTentacle's topic in The Rocket Bar
Yikes. Just saw this. Sorry, I don't buy the whole "change your game to how we say it should be or else you're oppressing women and anyone who isn't white, you evil oppressor" nonsense. The politically correct demands are more a desire to control than anything else. What's offensive to me is when some (not talking about anyone here) cloak their demands in a "righteous crusader for the wronged and downtrodden" facade as they bully and smear non-compliant developers as "sexist" or "racist." Someone in another thread posted a link to a EuroGamer review that reminds me of this. Anyway, the suggestion that games requiring you to rescue a female character harm women is the height of ridiculousness. But some politically correct critics, who could probably find objectionable, patriarchal, racist, sexist and whatever-ist content in any handful of pixels, if you gave them long enough, have to convince us that certain games lead to all kinds of terrible outcomes (e.g., "harmful to women"), since who would ever want to be seen as being anti-women. And then, when pressed to explain how such games are harmful, we hear critics claim that the real problem with non-compliant games is just that they're uninteresting or something. But, if you don't agree, you'll eventually be accused of being a racially insensitive person who is interested in maintaining a male-dominated power structure or something. That's why I don't buy that such objections are nothing more than wanting "more interesting" stories. Developers who are faced with such demands could tell people like the EuroGamer reviewer where to stick their complaints. And then they could mock them further by creating villain game characters modeled after the PC speech police. Refusing to be cowed by the intimidation would win the developer many new fans. -
I agree that crowd-funding is a great alternative. However, I have some real concerns about Kickstarter, now that it has been shown that they tried to censor a movie project about a serial killer. I still use Kickstarter, but hope that other platforms like Indiegogo rise in popularity.

Something that DOES worry me...
PurpleTentacle replied to Fronzel Neekburm's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
I definitely agree with this. I believe most of the iconic Space Quest scenes are from 3 and 4. Also, I actually loved the whole bright, colorful look of SQ1VGA. It totally livened up things from the original. Now, I might get excommunicated from the SpaceQuest.net site for saying this, but I felt like the SQ1VGA music and art outshone the actual game and puzzle design for the game. So it puzzles me somewhat to hear that both the Two Guys still resent that remake. But I guess I don't know what all went down behind the scenes. Of course, with Space Quests 3 and 4, the games are brilliant all around. So, count me as one of those hoping for a lively, striking, sometimes comical look rather than all drab, straightforward settings. -
This is awesome, but who did you use for the guy in the suit? He doesn't look much like Roger.

I'm totally lost. What is Kickstopper? I don't get it. :-( Also, that EuroGamer review calling LSL sexist and racist is ridiculous and seems like self-parody. Anyway, as for SpaceVenture and whether the scenes look uninteresting, I think a lot will depend on how much opportunity there is to examine and explore all the parts of each scene. I hope the narrator responses in the game often provide useful or relevant info to help the player with the puzzles and also enrich the story and atmosphere. They can still be funny. Sometimes just having a bunch of random gag responses to all areas of the screen is less satisfying than more game-relevant info. What I mean is, sometimes narrator responses can sound like they were written after the fact, as if someone were going down a list of items thinking of something funny to say for each one just because they had to complete the list. Please, make sure most of the writing is given purpose, beyond just fulfilling "need for gag when player looks at such-and-such." So, that, to me, is more important than whether the environment "looks" interesting in a screenshot. But I have to say that, reviewing the new art (what little we've seen), I'm not at all worried that we will be given lots of cool areas to explore. P.s.- about the writing: less is more. Keep it pithy. Oh, and please don't have the narrator describe the main character as doing something without animating the action for the player to see. LSL:R often let the narrator describe actions that were never animated, and the result was to help make the game feel cheap and the narration sometimes seem like optional fluff that could be routinely ignored.
