  1. And I'm still Danish which, according to the WHO, is a step up from Estonian. Obviously, my affliction is not as severe as Troels', but that's just a matter of time. Ironically, I'm currently studying computer science with the goal of becoming... a software developer. I've been fairly indecisive regarding my education - back in 2008, I spent a semester studying comparative litterature before realising that wasn't it. Then I had the social security finance my sorry ass since I couldn't get a job afterwards, and I spent the next two years studying to become a teacher of Danish, English, Drama and Media Studies. But again, that wasn't it. I'm very happy with my studies at the moment, though, and with my life in general. I'm living with my girlfriend of four years, working on music in my spare time and, of course, working on the VSB voice pack on an on/off basis.
  2. You're not supposed to get past him. See if you can find another way. The way out sticks out like a sore thumb, so it should be easy enough to find - no... bones about it
  3. Admittedly, I do like what I have seen from the third game. Like the whole concept of Megaton, for instance. I'm guessing I'd still prefer the gameplay of the first two, but at least it's not "Fallout Tactics" all over again. Oh, and to get this back on-topic, I have completely neglected to mention the "Hitman" soundtracks. Huge bummer that Jesper Kyed isn't returning for the fifth game. His soundtracks for the first four games rank as some of the best and most memorable that have ever been written.
  4. Adding to what Andres wrote, my personal advice is that you just play it - believe me, there certainly are a lot of click events in there that the other LPs have missed. Nearly everything in the game has unique feedback. And I mean nearly everything; prepping the talkie is hell. The narrator alone has 2949 lines!
  5. Armstrong was fantastic. Let's let union of geniuses cement that ;) I'm a huge fan of the two first "Fallout"-games, which is odd, since I'm generally not very interested in RPGs. I think it's the retro-future post-apocalyptic setting. I have a huge fascination with dystopias in general, and the universe of those two games caters to that. I'd try "Fallout 3" and "New Vegas", but I fear my increasingly crappier laptop may explode if I try to run them.
  6. Oh, I certainly do now. Evidently, I wasn't very good at it when I was younger :P I was referring to the CDs themselves there. They were pretty much worn-out. Last time I played CMI, I used ScummVM as well (which does indeed work like a charm) and copied the game files from the CDs to avoid playing from them. That process took a lot of patience, though. That my laptop clearly has a lousy DVD drive didn't make things better.
  7. That does sound good indeed. I love how they used Louis Armstrong's "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" in the "Fallout 2"-intro. I grew up with my dad's jazz records, so hearing that voice was an unexpected - and pleasant - surprise.
  8. It's very refreshing to see a debate on this without the thread being shut down. This would have been no-go back in ye olden days where these games were, ironically enough, a lot harder to find than they are now. And I should know! I didn't actually own the "Space Quest"-games legally till I bought the 2006 collection around 08 or 09. I owe my love for "Space Quest" (and a lot of other games) to abandonware, but even if those games had been available legally to me without major hassle, I have always thought there is something awfully ass-backwards about going to eBay and shelling out the big bucks for some outdated collection of CD-ROMs that'll wear out a few years later anyway. The problem is also carrying over to downloads. While GOG offer very reasonable pricing, lots of freebies and total freedom over the games once you've bought them, the overpriced and DRM-ridden services such as Steam still have a ridiculously huge market share. And worse, they have lots of major developers on their roster. I mean, for the love of God... why on Earth would I want to pay €9.99 for a partial download of "Quake"? Partial because, as I've mentioned in another thread, you don't get the soundtrack. Not even as an extra. And good luck ripping a pristine copy of that from a used 1996 CD-ROM. I'm actually in a similar dilemma these days; recently, my battered old copy of "The Curse of Monkey Island" was stolen, along with a couple of other oldies I had lying around. One of the other games have since been released as freeware ("Command & Conquer"), one of them is available for next-to-nothing on GOG ("Fallout 2"). Heck, I already bought one of them ("Outcast") off GOG because of compatibility issues with the physical version. But that's where the fun ends, because for some reason, CMI - my favourite adventure game of all time - can't be downloaded legally anywhere. Mind you, the CD-ROMs were next to unplayable anyway, so the fact that they were stolen doesn't anger me that much; I have been thinking about how I was going to replace them for a while. But still, I paid for it once, so I'm heavily considering torrenting it wherever I can. I've looked on eBay, and the prices are just not reasonable when you take the age of the game and the relative fragility of the physical medium into consideration. Illegal as all this is, I just don't see why it's unethical. It's not as if LucasArts are losing more money on me downloading it than they are if I buy it second-hand. That was a bit of a rant, but as you can tell, the issues of copyright and the increasingly greedy tendencies of IP holders are huge interests of mine. I'd argue you can draw a direct line from "You're stealing someone's car when downloading this ancient game" (paraphrasing the example Ali mentioned) to the recent entertainment industry lobbyism for SOPA/ACTA/CISPA. It's a very slippery slope, and I think IP holders need to reconsider why they're even in the business to begin with. I'd wager most artists (in a sense, these games are art) didn't start with "Well, I'm gonna make me some money and treat my customers like they're drooling idiots." Wow. That was a long rant. Hopefully it still makes sense, if only to a certain extent. And now you'll have to excuse me. I'm off to download "The Curse of Monkey Island."
  9. There'd some great lewd humour in the early games, if you know where to look. The later ones also had their moments - the SQ6 line about Beatrice using Roger's sphincter as a necklace is a standout for me ;)
  10. Picking one favourite game soundtrack is quite hard for me, but at the moment, I'm gonna pick "Outcast". As you can tell, this shit is epic. Goes for the game as well, and if you buy the game on GOG.com, you also get the soundtrack as an extra download. As for the "Fallout"-series, I've never played the third game, but the soundtracks of the first two are awesome as well. They actually gave me more than a few childhood nightmares ;) The theme for the town Modoc in "Fallout 2" is a standout. I've rarely heard sadder music.
  11. I like the SQ5 soundtrack a lot, but I don't think I ever listened to this. Will give it a listen later today ;)
  12. The entire soundtrack was spot-on, though I sometimes secretly wish Reznor had scored that game as well. Would have been interesting. Apparently, he turned down ID's request, claiming that "Quake II" didn't have the atmosphere of the first game.. Of course, he was later commissioned to do the music and sound effects of "Doom 3", but that was not to be either...
  13. Awesome - welcome back indeed :o
  14. I suppose the community can deal with a few more :offtopic: posts, considering the near-wasteland that preceded this sudden flurry of activity  I loved the soundtrack for "The Social Network", but the one for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is arguably too big a mouthful. I love the cover of "The Immigrant Song", though. While I also like "Ghosts I-IV", I'm unlikely to listen to all of that in one sitting as well, but I do love the album. I also the riffing on "Big Gun", but Cerberon is arguably the iconic track. The E1M1 of "Quake II." That you don't get the soundtracks if you purchase these games on Steam is nothing short of a crime.
  15. Chamber 15, actually. Oh, and then I'll just veer off-topic again. The "Quake"-soundtrack is downright nasty, and I mean that as a huge compliment to Reznor. For us NIN-fans, I'd say it also works as a fitting end to the "Self Destruct"-era, and even though his recent soundtrack work has been awesome, the "Quake"-soundtrack still contains some of his most accomplished instrumental work. It's certainly the darkest... I love the "Quake II"-soundtrack as well. Very different, but it does really get the adrenaline pumping. When you fire up a single player game, and "Descent Into Cerberon" starts playing, you know the Strogg are gonna have their biomechanical asses kicked.
  16. Thanks for the recommendation. Been considering getting that game, but an RPG starring Mario seemed a bit odd. Will give it a try! :)
  17. Yeah, great work as always, Akril :D Good to see that you're drawing SQ-stuff again!
  18. I don't play that much these days. But when I do, it's usually older stuff - I'm just on a laptop, and I have no interesting in saving up money for a stationary gaming PC. I've been playing a lot of "Half-Life 2," which I haven't played previously. That got me hooked on "Portal" as well, but the test chamber I'm stuck at right now - and have been for a while - is a real bitch. Also currently going through "Quake" for the first time. Mainly cause I wanted to hear Trent Reznor's creepy-as-hell soundtrack in action. I also dug out the sequel just today; still have the old CD for it. I'm also having a lot of fun with the ZNES emulator. Been playing a lot of "Super Mario Bros.", "Super Mario World" and "Super Star Wars" recently. I never had a SNES myself, but I'm seriously considering getting one now. On and off, I've also been playing the "Hitman" games, "Diablo II", "StarCraft", "Fallout" and - when there's really nothing else to do - "Duke Nukem 3D." Apart from the issue of PC horsepower, there's just something that keeps drawing me back to the golden oldies. Should reinstall my Sierra collections as well, as I think. I may see the craving for an adventure fix coming soon.
  19. You know, this could be the perfect outlet for that collaborative fangame effort that was brought up a while ago. We could decide on a red thread to carry through the games, and then do a bunch of smaller text adventures that fit within the larger scheme of things. The thought of users submitting SQ-text adventures to SQN/VBC is also sort of mindblowing to me right now. Must be the red wine from last night still talking.
  20. You may be thinking of Z-machine. However, the King's Quest Omnipedia (there's... two of them!) states that the KQ5 text adventure uses an engine called "Quest." Might be worth pursuing.
  21. The yellow ship-screen featured a "Curse of Monkey Island"-style sequence, only with a slingshot rather than a cannon. After that got scrapped, we didn't think of arcade sequences anymore, it'd seem.
  22. Aye, good to see some regulars returning. Welcome back ;)
  23. As far as I remember, Diane was diagnosed with a condition that would make her lose eyesight over time, eventually rendering her blind. It's a real shame, and I don't mean to be morbid or anything, but that would explain all too well why she may not be online anywhere. Overall, I prefer your explanation. At least that one doesn't make me depressed. I don't know much about the whereabouts of other regulars, but this could very well be Kain. And of course, Colin Panetta suddenly showed up when we released VSB. Also on Facebook, I believe. Now, Gareth... why would I ever lie to you? Wait. Scratch that; it's the incompetence. Sorry about that. I checked, and I have about as much luck with PMs as you do with BBCode jokes. Dunno where my reply ended up; for a while, I was sort of stressed about all the voice editing to be done, so disturbingly, I may just have been imagining things. At least I didn't send the PM to myself this time. If my escalating dementia doesn't scare you off, you're still more than welcome, though. By all means, e-mail your auditions to Andres, P.C. or me and we'll figure something out without me screwing things up.
  24. There is a chance he's watching; a while ago, he PM'ed me about auditioning for the VSB talkie. I PM'ed him back and told him he was more than welcome to audition, but nothing ever came of it, so I kinda ended up taking the role myself :P
