Great job on the last big push, guys! Hero-U is already above $400K with 4 hours to go. This is a great year for Sierra enthusiasts.

Though Frede said the first four 007 movies were more faithful to the books than the fifth, that's not saying much. If the movies had been completely faithful to the original books, Bond would be dead at the end of From Russia With Love. Artistic liberties were taken with the series in general.

Burning questions for The Pope
Dat Engineer replied to Troels Pleimert's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
A convincingly faked Geordie voice works too... -
Though this is obviously an exception rather than the rule, some writers can be very prolific with genres. Remember that Roald Dahl, who wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, also penned the screenplay for 007 film You Only Live Twice.

Frankly it's for the opposite reason of many of the other posters here. I loved the Quest For Glory series. The storyline was very gripping, the graphics were great, the gameplay was incredible. This, well... How do I put this? It doesn't look like a faithful continuation. Which surprises me considering that it's being headed up by the two original designers of the game. The cartoony art style is a bit of a step down after the neo-Gothic masterpiece that was Shadows Of Darkness. The other reason is, I think it's unreasonable that all of these Kickstarters are asking us for exorbitant amounts of money back-to-back, especially after many of us shelled out lots of our hard-earned bucks for SpaceVenture and Quest For Infamy. There's more than a bit of fatigue involved.

Sharpei's selection of Roger Wilco may have its basis in the fact that Roger has gone missing before, and no one really cared - after being abducted by Vohaul's Apemen in SQ2, he was basically MIA until he showed up again in the StarCon Academy in SQ5. Dr. Beleauxs even says this during The Great Plot ExpositionTM just before the SQ6 endgame: "We thought no one would miss you. Go figure." Compared to anyone else in the universe, Roger probably has absolutely no value (Edit: I realized I just used a relative and an absolute in the same sentence. I fail at style) It's hard for me to compare Ace Hardway to Roger Wilco because it's basically comparing a real, tangible apple to a picture of one, and I'm afraid to speculate lest my visions of the character differ from what the Two Guys actually have in mind.
-
I don't know... as far as Roger was concerned, they would have to find some reason - any reason at all - to get him back in good standing with StarCon, considering what heavy punishments there would otherwise be for the "atrocities" he committed in his stint as Captain of the Eureka/Goliath. Then again, you could also argue that being assigned to the Deepship 86 is possibly the worst punishment that any tribunal council could dream up, period.
-
Unless you are of the school of thought that Space Quest 5 doesn't exist, he does a great deal of cleaning in that game, including the StarCon crest. :) Edit: Ah, but I guess you could make the argument that he was technically not a janitor in that game, so...
-
If you check the SQ4 transcript, Roger Jr. outright says this, so it's hard to assume that Roger could have ended up anyplace else when he had gone through the Time Rip. As for StarCon Academy, since that was a Mark Crowe retcon, it's a bit difficult to view any of the previous Space Quest games from the perspective of StarCon ever existing. ;)

Hmm. Topic is from 2003... Yeah, I think I'll pass on reading through that. Ancient history indeed! It would be hard to create a "fan club" for Roger Wilco without turning it into a cliche. That "obsessive fan" device has been used so many times in storytelling; the best subversion I can think of is The Incredibles, where Mr. Incredible's "number one fan" becomes his nemesis -- Syndrome. On the other hand, it would be funny if Roger's travels took him to a planet whose entire culture is based around a worshipful idolatry of him - Wilco statues, Wilco coffee mugs, Wilco T-shirts, a variation of football called Wilcoball - assuming that it's handled carefully. With a device like that, you either have to be very subtle or blatantly absurd in order for it to not appear trite and forced.
-
PsyckoSama put it best in a different thread: We all know about Roger Wilco's story and how he got the short end of the broomstick in Space Quest 6, but those who are inside the universe - not just StarCon's tribunal, but all of StarCon period - probably were under the impression that Roger went rogue and murdered Captain Quirk without probable cause. They probably believe that Roger got let off the hook too easy by being allowed to serve as a janitor on DeepShip 86. I don't think Roger has any fans at all simply because the universe he's in doesn't hold him in very high regard, save for those who know him personally.

I wouldn't have shown up either unfortunately. I collapsed into bed as soon as I got home from work. :(

A friend of mine just scheduled their birthday party at 6PM EST on the same day as the Hangout, and invited me to it. Decisions!!!
-
Can we do the Saturday 13th hangout after 3:30 PM EST (that'll be 2130 Troels' time)?
-
I'm up for it. Edit: For those hungry for more content, even though there's no hangout this Saturday, I will be posting an adventure game related video on YouTube that day, which I will link to either on this thread or somewhere else on the forum. :)
-
We need to start coming up with unofficial titles for these Hangouts. Superfan Hangout #3: The Case Of The Missing Webcams :D
-
As I said above, I think more people (myself included) seem to find the running commentary a lot more engaging than just a playthrough of the game. When somebody watches the Hangout on YouTube, the topmost video will be of the person who is currently speaking, thus you might notice that you and Troels tend to dominate the screen time, whereas PCJ and I do not appear as often, save for our little interjections and exclamations ("COMMANDER KEEEEN!!!") I'll be in for however many hangouts. Maybe we could also have a forum for potential fan game ideas?
-
On that note, the next time we do a Superfan, I'll remember to provide more running commentary for the game being played. I think there was a lot of stuff that I found interesting in QFG1 that I should have drawn attention to. I really get entrenched in the games when I play them, though. :P

Aha.
-
Well, that went extraordinarily well. We were all over the place but I think it was still fun. :)

With all of the references that Sprint has in SQ5 (the StarCon Aptitude Test, the intership transmissions, the guards in the brig, etc.), one wonders if they paid a good sum of money for product placement...
-
I'm fine with 2pm EST. Hope to see everyone there!
-
Shall we shoot for 5:00 PM/1700 EST?
-
SQ2? Or SQ2 Eye? Or that awful SQ2 edit I made a few years back?
-
What? Did you miss the smiley? Don't apologize. I wasn't really looking forward to playing Riven anyway.
