Sato
I'm looking to get into this series, but I'm looking for a few ways of getting all the games in their various forms. I know that the first game was remade, and the remake is the one used on most stores and physical releases. I'm also aware that the original is available on GoG, along with SQ2 and 3. However, I'm wondering if there are any physical releases that contain the original version of the game? I prefer having physical stuff, and I'd like to play through both at some point anyway. Thanks in advance! And sorry if there's somewhere more appropriate to put this, but it seemed fine here :P
Frede
You'd have to buy one of the old collections on eBay, I think. I don't think there are any versions in print that contain the original SQ1, disturbing as that is.

Troels Pleimert
Be warned; some of the later Collections do not include the original SQ1EGA, for some reason -- only the VGA remake. Your best bet for finding a boxed version of SQ1EGA would probably be eBay. But they probably don't come cheap.
BlockMaster
Me too I want Space Quest 1 EGA. It's the only Space Quest game that I never played. I have the newest Space Quest Collection, but it's not something that I want enough to buy. <_< I prefer the VGA. :P

MusicallyInspired
The only collection that doesn't have the AGI original is the 2006 re-release. Anything before that is fine, with the exception of the Space Quest Trilogy and the Space Quest Saga which only contain the remake of SQ1, it looks like. Steam also only has the remake (as it's basically a re-release of the 2006 collection). It used to be on ActiVision's store as well, though I don't think it is anymore. Same deal at any rate. The best one to get would be the Space Quest Collection Series which has all 6 games, both versions of SQ1, a few bonus games, and a teaser trailer for SQ7. The Current Inside Copy, etc videos are on there as well. It's quite the pack on two cds. I highly recommend it if you can get a hold of it. Most of us started with the AGI version so it has a special place of nostalgia in our hearts. I, for instance, prefer Mark Crowe's AGI artwork to the outsourced-to-Korea over-stylized 40's sci-fi look of the remake by far. I love Mark's view of technology. I love the yellow/brown, purple-skied desert of Kerona more than the red sand/rocked green-skied SQ1VGA. The remake is fun (and the soundtrack is great! One of SQ1VGA's higher points), but I just think the original's atmosphere wins out. xTr1m and BlockMaster
Troels Pleimert
Am I the only one that prefer Space Quest I VGA to the original? Well, yeah -- apart from some great additional writing by Josh Mandel and Ken Allen's kick-ass soundtrack, the VGA version will always be the inferior one. In my mind, at least. Oh, and don't mention the VGA version to Scott Murphy -- he will LOSE. HIS. SHIT. drdrslashvohaul, MusicallyInspired, BlockMaster and 1 other
tomimt
SQ1 VGA is a bit too pulp. It really doesn't fit in well with the rest of the series. I take it it's a sore spot for Scott then? Was it made without the supervision of the guys?
Frede
Yes. It's a "great" example of commercialism. It's got nothing to do with the Guys apart from being based on their game. If I remember correctly, they didn't even realise it was in development till fairly late in the process. I'll admit, I appreciate it for what it is. Like Troels mentions, it's got some funny writing and a brilliant soundtrack. But it's not really a game by the Two Guys from Andromeda. Troels Pleimert
I take it it's a sore spot for Scott then? Was it made without the supervision of the guys? Yeah. He and Mark were told, late in the process, "Hey, if you have any comments, please let us know!" And so they did, only to be told, "Well, we can't change that. Anything else?" Scott hates SQ1VGA with a passion.
MusicallyInspired
Besides the art direction and lack of 2 Guys involvement, what else was different between the original and the remake? There were the two instances of copy protection, the 2 Guys instant replay death sequences (which were actually a good part), the widget/slot machine solution (worth points but I'm not sure if the vga version has more points than the original or not), the addition of the SQ4 easter egg which was a nice touch. I think Doug Oldfield was involved in the remake, however, and I seem to recall Scott getting along well with him to the point of saying if there was a third guy from andromeda he would be it. The remake has merits, but the original is far better solely for the fact that neither of the Two Guys directed it. Frede
tomimt
There's aspects I liked about the VGA remake. The way to cheat in the slotmachine with a magnet was one of them, as I've always found the money grinding bits in the old Sierra games to be a waste ot time. But I can see why Scott is sore with the game, especially if it was made behind their backs. Frede
Capn_Ascii
Am I the only one that prefer Space Quest I VGA to the original? Nope! I actually prefer it by far over the EGA version, though in my case it was the VGA one that I played first. I didn't get a copy of the EGA version until *years* later - and when compared to the remake, the jazzed-up writing and great music of the VGA version leave the EGA version in the dust. Personally, I also liked the pulp, 'Buck Rogers' design aesthetic, but mostly because, as a remake, they have a bit of license (in my mind) to have some fun with making new versions of the old graphics. Straight upgrades of existing assets are all well and good, but I always enjoy new, creative takes on existing concepts. That's the Tranformers fan in me, I guess...after you see dozens of versions of the same characters and concepts across successive continuities, you start to gain appreciation for the ones that take the paths less traveled. :P
