pcj reacted to Tawmis in Space Quest 3 in S-Video (removes dithering)
I don't think it's against any rules; however, visually - for myself, anyway - it looks less appealing. It all looks super blurred to me, rather than the smoother... pixel appearance.

There was also the original art from the SQ4 box that was sold on eBay during the KS project. But yeah I bet they'd go for a lot.

pcj reacted to troflip in Cascade Quest announcement
I'm officially announcing my upcoming game Cascade Quest, hopefully ready late this year! Details are here:
http://www.icefallgames.com/CascadeQuest/
The early Space Quest series was probably my biggest inspiration in terms of humor and gameplay for this game. I'm using SCI Companion to develop it, and it runs inside the Unity engine.
Please check it out, and follow @icefallgames on twitter for more information and screenshots!

I didn't get time. Patience.

That's the worst idea I've ever heard.

pcj got a reaction from suejak in Why is SQ6 (generally) disliked?
That wasn't the only time it happened in the SQ series though. SQ2 reset the accomplishments of SQ1. You could argue SQ5 is the one that reset SQ4's accomplishments as well. In which case SQ6 actually reset SQ5's accomplishments.
I think the point the Two Guys were trying to get across is that Roger was always destined to be a loser no matter how well he did. ("Life sucks, again.").
More characters is certainly a departure from previous SQs, though Sludge Vohaul pretty much came out of nowhere as the big bad of SQ2.
Well, that lack of a resolution is hardly the fault of SQ6. They probably expected to tie that up in SQ7. (The fan game Incinerations provides a decent resolution to the Stellar/Bea thing BTW).

Cool! Now change KQ5 to make Cedric less annoying.

Farm Feud
Farm Feud follows the story of a small group of barnyard critters, and some mutual varmint acquaintances, who are fed up with life on the farm and are resistant to the inevitable journey to the slaughterhouse.
Convinced that the farmer is controlling the minds of the other animals by drugging the food and water supplies, our heroes decide to take it upon themselves to gather up any weapon they can make or find, in the event they are forced to fight back against their captor and his hired hands.
Unfortunately, they soon realize that their suspicions are correct and that the farmer's maniacal plans are more gruesome than they could have ever imagined -- building a partially-organic, somewhat-hormone-free, frozen meal empire.
Faced with a future filled with severed limbs, fatal-levels of preservatives, cardboard coffins, and freezer burn, the time for escape is now. They must kill their way through a blockade of the farmer's obedient, zombie-like army who are compelled to prevent our heroes from escaping.
Fling Kong
From a long line of ruthless, blood-thirsty, killer apes, Fling Kong, the black sheep of the royal Kong family, terrorizes his way out of the zoo and across the city the only way he knows how—by throwing poo. Join the mayhem and light a match as you follow along Fling's escape from imprisonment. Exact revenge against your captors and antagonizers with an arsenal of stool consistencies guaranteed to leave a mark or at least, make a splat. Prepare to bear down and grunt your way through countless environments in this fecal-flinging, wildly-messy, obscene adventure.

It's an interesting idea. I just don't think we were looking for that sort of meta humor there.

There also needs to be a flashlight app with pro in the name and a giant long list of permissions. I can't come up with it all right now, but here's an idea for it:
The Ultimate Flash Pro Lite (Demo) 50%OFF!!
The official app to use your Camera's flash to light your way in the dark! Super bright - better than a real flashlight!
FEATURES:
* Turns your phone into a flashlight for over half a minute without overheating!
* Light up anything within range of your flash
* Keep your hands warm while holding it
* Large, easy to use on-off button
* Display keeps track of the flashlight's status
* SUPER BRIGHT!
REQUIRED PERMISSIONS:
* Phone State & Address Book (To e.g. turn on or off when you're in a call)
* Full Internet Access (To e.g. keep track of updates)
* Admin Access (To integrate properly with your phone)

pcj reacted to troflip in SCI Companion v3 has been released!
Visit the SCI Companion for download links and more info: SCI Companion 3
I've spent much of the last year working on version 3 of SCI Companion, which now provides full support for creating and modding VGA Sierra games. It even includes a decompiler to reconstruct source code from old games!
blurb from my website:
-----------------------------
SCI Companion is a completely free IDE (integrated development environment) that lets you create games that run on Sierra’s SCI engine. SCI Companion 3 is now available, which offers support for SCI1.1+, which includes VGA graphics and digital audio.
Create 16-color EGA graphical adventures with a text parser interface (in the style of King’s Quest 4, Space Quest 3 or Leisure Suit Larry 3).
Create 256-color VGA graphical adventures with a point-and-click interface (in the style of Space Quest 5, Gabriel Knight, or Quest For Glory 3).
Comes with a complete well-documented class system and template game.
Lets you browse, extract or modify graphics, text and sounds from nearly any SCI game that you own.
Decompile the code behind these classic games to see how they work (or find Easter eggs). Scripting in SCI is accomplished via a language similar to LISP and SmallTalk.
Includes streamlined editors for graphic assets.
And other game resources like text and audio.

pcj got a reaction from MusicallyInspired in To Gary Owens voice match, or not to Gary Owens voice match, that is the question..
Speaking for myself I'd certainly want the sarcastic narrator approach we saw throughout the SQ series, which Gary Owens did so well. I wouldn't particularly want someone trying to imitate Gary Owens, but a similar voice could work as long as they were doing their own thing and it didn't sound forced.

It’s finally here!
This review/retrospective tackles why we loved Sierra games against the backdrop of King’s Quest 2015. It tries to provide tangible game design reasons about what made classic Sierra games special, with a particular focus on the special relationship between storytelling and puzzles. And of course a look at how KQ2015 measures up.
Even if you don’t ultimately agree with my opinions, it should be a fun, nostalgic romp through Sierra games as it also tries to celebrate Sierra games and their creators. It contains clips from almost all the Sierra games (yes, lot's of Space Quest), interview excerpts from most of the original designers (yes, Mark Crowe & Scott Murphy), lots of classic Sierra music, and a tribute to Gary Owens.

pcj got a reaction from suejak in Space Quest was Sierra's true crown jewel
Eh, maybe to us personally, but SQ doesn't have the community today that KQ has - look at the Phoenix Online forums, even back in their "Silver Age" versus here. Not much activity round these parts even back then. And it's not like there weren't similar things going on - the SQ7 group shut down about the same time TSL was going through its own cease-and-desist throes, which eventually reversed, supposedly thanks to their fans... And saying it's SQ ignores the following that games like QFG, GK, or even PQ has...
My intent is not to dump on any specific community. Perhaps SQ just appeals to a different type of person than KQ - the underdog.
My opinion as a programmer is that AGI/SCI, as well as Ken's ability to keep developers produce a number of quality games for years, are the true "crown jewels" of Sierra. Without an engine that could let storytellers do what they wanted or a producer that pushed them to succeed, I don't see how Sierra could have been successful. It's only once Ken was pushed out by Cendant that we saw Sierra fall. I don't feel that SQ could have happened at that time without Sierra. SQ helped diversify Sierra's portfolio and probably helped make it a bigger name, but there was Sierra before there was SQ. Ken was the one that let Scott learn how to program and develop his own game after hiring him for random projects. That wouldn't have happened later, or likely at another game company.

Besides Steam and GOG, the Humble Store may be a good place to sell it, since a purchase there can give people both the DRM-free version and a Steam key (when Greenlit).

pcj got a reaction from Frede in Vohaul Strikes Back vs. Incinerations
Speaking as one of the VSB leads, they're certainly two different games. I felt VSB stuck more closely to the Space Quest style, whereas Incinerations took Space Quest off into a new direction.
So I would say VSB is probably the better sequel, but Incinerations is likely the better game for being able to stand on its own.
