Frede
Must be the year the first "mobile phone" appeared. Though they obviously weren't very mobile back then, to say the least.
Collector
Correct. Motorola was the first company to produce a handheld mobile phone. On 3 April 1973 Martin Cooper, a Motorola engineer and executive, made the first mobile telephone call from handheld subscriber equipment in front of reporters, placing a call to Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_mobile_phones#Predecessors
MusicallyInspired
The picture they used is kind of jarring. Also, that shot of Picard holding the PADD is from at least season 3 (no lines on the shoulders of his uniform, which only existed in season 1 and 2) so that year would be 1989 at least. Of course, they did have PADDs in the first season as well. /geek mode ...just kidding, geek mode never turns off. Troels Pleimert

SteveHNo96
Most of the technology was based on science fiction stuff like Star Trek. That's actually what made it so cool. If you think about it though, a lot of the people who made this stuff were nerds and nerds liked Star Trek as a kid, so they'd love this stuff. Plus, making it look like the stuff from Star Trek just made it that much more awesome.
