Er. This side of the pond we pronounce it an-drom-i-da... That's racist, that is, Akril. ;)

Of course, if you deliberately choose a minority system, such annoyances are to be expected.

Sci-fi is obviously very similar, but is not the same as fantasy. I'm also not a big RPG or Fantasy fan, and I haven't pledged to Hero-U, nor do I intend to. Wishing a project well and actually putting one's money where one's mouth is are two very different things. I'm also curious how collectively "we" could be "wrong"? I'm not picking a fight or taking offence, I'm just intrigued about the argument you're making here. I don't think any of us are saying, absolutely, that "fantasy sucks" or "Hero-U sucks", rather, "fantasy and Hero-U don't appeal to us". (In rather broad brush strokes.) For me, Kickstarter is about backing the things you really want to see succeed and would be willing to spend money on anyway. My first instinct with SpaceVenture wasn't about getting the game funded per se it was "I want a copy of this game". The reason I pledged much more than the RRP was the additional emotional attachment to Space Quest, great respect for the Two Guys, and the nostalgia of this internet community which was the first place I really interacted with other humans who I didn't know "in real life". In other words, I pledged despite the existence of Troels Pleimert, Frederik Olsen and Anders Kalle. ;) Since I have no emotional attachment to the project (never played QfG, nor does the genre or the style of game appeal to me that much), and do not want to buy the product, I won't be pledging. I'm sure the designers are great. I am not saying the product is bad for what it is. I simply wouldn't know, nor care (if that's not too blunt). I loved the Sierra games, and the more of these things succeed the more chance there is that a competitive industry can be built up producing a load of really good games. However, I would rather that these projects got funded "organically". Pledges to projects without any real emotional or financial attachment won't help in the long run. Sure, the product will get funded, but what about the sales afterwards? Backing a business that is doomed to fail because people think it's a great idea but wouldn't buy the resultant product to me is not the way to go. The market might be there for the idea, but unless the idea is translated into a desirable product, it will be worth nought. But hey - I'm a selfish arsehole. ;) What I will say is that you guys have done a decent job in advertising and promoting it. I say that as an individual, in the sense that I've heard about it quite a bit over recent weeks through Chris Pope's blog post and these threads on the forums. I know about the product and have spent time thinking about whether I want to pledge or not. This would lead me to two questions: a) are you pushing it this well in other areas and markets; B) and if you are and still aren't getting backers, is there something wrong with the product and/or sales pitch?

Burning questions for The Pope

As long as you know that "posh" is most definitely faked in my case... ;) -

I'd say time is ripe for an audio mockumentary on the two guys and what they "really" did post-1996... -
Burning questions for The Pope
drdrslashvohaul replied to Troels Pleimert's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
It was indeed excellent. With these past two episodes, I hope fans like you and Jess get the opportunity to turn up on the show more often. Chris is excellent, but having a different voice every now and again helps to mix it up. And Akril, obviously! Don't want to miss her out! -
To pick up on clearly the most important issue in this thread, surely it's a "metric shit-tonne"? Otherwise, I reserve the right to steal this expression and use it liberally in general conversation.

Ace Hardway ... what a guy
drdrslashvohaul replied to Troels Pleimert's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
Thing is, though, they kept rehiring him. And I'm not sure the guy had that much stroke in the higher echelons of command. Then again, it could be yet another plot inconsistency and yet another example of sloppy, amateurish writing. -

Ace Hardway ... what a guy

I think flawed heroes work best when they're not spectacularly awful. They shouldn't be spectacularly anything. If he's an average handyman, not bad enough to never get called again, not good enough to make any serious money, then he's definitely the man for the job. Look at Roger. He was a decent janitor. Just not a great one. Or an awful one. Totally average. -
At the risk of blaspheming, I think that "vibe" is perfectly recreated in the opening sequence of Incinerations. The bit that I always think about with SQ is the beginning of SQ4. The whole thing is brilliant, with Gary Owens, the art, the music, the genuine tension you get from the robot and the zombie. Excellent. I know the Crowemurphyists wanted a parser, but I still think they nailed it, even with the point n' lick interface.

Looks like we've got a stand off here. Who's going to call "irony fail" first? :D

Spread this amongst your web design/dev friends
drdrslashvohaul replied to Rahul's topic in Andromedan Spaceport
Precisely. Which means I have no doubt that these guys will produce something (assuming they use HTML5) which will be just as portable. Maybe something that could be used by other developers? Maybe something that would allow a whole new generation of AGI games. Sorry. 2GFAGI. Pronunciation - Too-guh-fag-ee. -

SQN only sneak peak at the PayPal stretch goal site

I would agree on the disagreement on translations. While I assume the little comment about there being no Europeans left who can't speak English was tongue-in-cheek, the fact is that there are a number of people who cannot speak English comfortably enough at a high enough level to fully appreciate the game, even though they would want to back it. 550k is a low goal, and seems to be a decent incentive for a relatively large group of people. Then the higher tiers focus on the even larger groups of people. I will, however, wholeheartedly agree on the "wordiness" with a caveat. I think the amount of text in the beginning parts of the project pitch (the bits people are going to be arsed to read) was too much, too complicated and too wordy. I wonder how many people either unconvinced or simply didn't read far enough to become convinced. Also, I appreciated the regular updates because I'm a fan - but a LOT of people have commented on how they felt they were being spammed. This is something to learn from in the future, I think. The caveat - for me, all this works. This doesn't come across as a micro-managed, slick, corporate campaign. It comes across as two incredibly enthusiastic guys (Scott and Mark) being backed by an incredibly enthusiastic fan (Pope) who are really excited to be working together on a new game. The "flaws" are almost its strengths. The almost ADD nature of the whole campaign (if you'll forgive the slightly offensive metaphor) makes it feel more real and more accessible. To me. I can imagine others feel differently. I think this is a little off-topic. But since I know the Pontiff of Crowemurphyism is reading this thread, I'll stick my two cents in. :)- 30 replies

Press Mentions of SpaceVenture, Two Guys, and Kickstarter

As much as I love the work the guys have done, some of those comments do make good points, though. Especially the thread of comments created by "fiddlesticks". -

I'm surprised it crossed over to the states. A lot of the humour and references are peculiarly British. Then again, I always think the humour in SQ is situated somewhere in the mid-Atlantic... I'd heard about a new project, but didn't realise it was a full series. Danny John Jules mentioned on Twitter that he'd received a script, but I didn't know whether it was a series or a movie. I hope it's the male Holly though. That guy was hilarious.

The final two series were pretty poor. The first six (before Craig Charles's sexual assault case) are definitely the best. There is talk of the Grant and Naylor getting back together to do a film, I believe? But I could be wrong on that front (and can't be arsed to Google it).
