s_d reacted to Blackthorne in I'd like to see SQ3 redone like SQ2 wasHeh - WHY did we make it? One reason, really. Just because we loved it.
To be honest, it was as simple as that.

s_d reacted to Blackthorne in I'd like to see SQ3 redone like SQ2 wasWell, who knows - maybe in the future we COULD get a license to make and sell it. If we were able to sell it for $5-$10 and make it so we could pay the team a decent wage, I'd love to do it. We just don't have the time to do free remakes anymore. When we started IA 10 years ago, most of us were young, single - no families, students or working stiffs (or disabled!) and we had tons of free time and a hell of a lot less bills! Now, most of us are married with children (multiple children) and the extra time to do stuff without pay just isn't there.

s_d reacted to Blackthorne in I'd like to see SQ3 redone like SQ2 wasSure - we actually have a LOT of content, whoa. We actually programmed almost all of the garbage scow area - I have demos of that. Like MI said, it was SUPPOSED to be the secret hidden full point ending for SQ2. To be able to play that first area of SQ3.
SQ3 is one of my favorite games of all time, let alone one of my favorite ADVENTURE games. We planned on doing some great stuff, but always staying faithful to the original game, which is perfect, really.
This was a test/concept background for the Garbage Freighter - we never got around to doing it. Most of our original work were paintovers of the original artwork, which I have SUCH an attachement to. We were experimenting with this style when we decided to cancel the project.

s_d reacted to Blackthorne in I'd like to see SQ3 redone like SQ2 wasAbsolutely I'd talk about this. I'm busy right now, but I'll totally dish on this. Got art and everything.
MI's right - he totally wanted alternate camera angles, and the few tests done with ideas like that turned out cool.

s_d reacted to Frede in I'd like to see SQ3 redone like SQ2 wasThe thing about SQ3 is that all remake efforts have been cursed from the get-go. Okay, maybe not Infamous' attempt, but the SQ3VGA projects I've seen rise and fall have usually been less than impressive. Either they were gaussian blur-fests where someone had just dragged Mark's original artwork into Photoshop and applied some colour tinkering and blurring to make it look "newer", or they'd have overly garish artwork that would merely have been painted over Mark's originals. And never with any sort of gameplay expansion. Same game - only with new audio and new visuals.
The problem with SQ3 is that it looks great to begin with. Mark really got the most out of those 16 colours. Unless the developers of a remake wanted to really play around with the boundaries, there'd be nothing to gain from a VGA remake. Yes, you'd have 240 more colours, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? An SQ3 remake would have to be a well-done overhaul rather than a new paint job if I were to feel something had been gained by remaking it.
Infamous Quests could get a way with a - mostly - 1:1 remake of SQ2 because there wasn't much to work with to begin with, in terms of the visuals. With SQ3, it's as if - because the original is near-perfect - no one really wants to replace the original aesthetics. Just arbitrarily make them "better". Which I'd argue is exactly the approach that'll never lead to a successful SQ3 remake.
I want to see the backgrounds from new angles, a bigger Garbage Freighter, new planets, etc. Don't just give me what the Two Guys released back in 1987 with a new coat of paint. You'd be doomed to fail because the old coat of paint is still damn impressive.

s_d reacted to Frede in Space Quest Historian Podcast - The Official ThreadHeh, this is probably one of the better posts here ;)
And quite the surprise, I might add. More so than when I finally realised pcj is not an android. To be fair, I'm still in denial about that one.

*cough* You rang?
Um...surprise?

I'm not a scientist, but if you have a dick, for once you're not eligible. ;)
Yes, I realize the irony of combatting sexual discrimination by discriminating myself. That's because I not only have a dick, I also am one.
Edit: Kidding aside, transgender and transsexuals are, of course, also welcome! I don't know if we even have any from the transgender crosssection represented in the SQ community? Would be cool if we did. I wear nail polish myself occasionally, but that hardly qualifies.

s_d got a reaction from Sir Procestuous in TGFA Kickstarter Fan Art ProjectYep, they've been fixed for about a week now.
Yeah, the Twinkie Nose Tuesdays would be a fantastic addition! You definitely deserve some payoff for all that twinkie consumption...
I'll have to steal Chris's avatar as well.

s_d got a reaction from penguinfan in SpaceVenture's Backers... Where are they hiding? There were large sections of "get to know" in some of the commentaries (including the Chris @ Oakhurst photos), but this is a great idea. I like Chris and feel that he's brought a lot. In particular, one would have to be completely blind to not have noticed the storm of press & attention he arranged after the Great Blackout (and 218K debacle), which essentially saved my favorite Kickstarter project of all time. Not everyone was as involved in the day-to-day of the campaign, as a backer, but I, and a few dozen others, were deeply involved. In fact, it is, in large part, those individuals who've resurfaced here, and integrated into the forum communities.
I agree with the sentiment that the SpaceVenture web presences are fractured, and I disagree with the assertion more central organization wouldn't work for the project. I can see how (specifically) a private forum community would be insufficient for every aspect of backer/dev interaction (in particular, reward fulfillment), but having the production diaries and concept art presented in weblog format seems a misstep. Forums, with integrated polling, are perfect for posting, discussing, and voting on concept art (including IP.Board, running here). I don't find the wordpress sites particularly awful to look at (I kind of like them) but they are awkward use and navigate in comparison to a streamlined approach, on at least a single website. I've four sites to follow for SpaceVenture; Kickstarter, SQN, SVRewards, and GFA.com... in fact, GFA.com may as well be two separate sites, the way they are divided. This is a big headache.
I love the content, though. :)

The artwork and music was awesome as well!*SPOILER ALERT* Of course I gotta admit, I got some chills watching the Two Guys plan SQ1 in the game!! Again, really good work! :)

s_d reacted to vega in SpaceVenture News and RumoursIf SpaceVenture is successful that can only mean that the IP for Space Quest will be even more expensive. Chances of them getting the IP are close to nil. People shouldn't be getting their hopes up because they'll only be disappointed. The only realistic outcome is that they can get the rights to develop a new game in the series under Activision's control.

s_d reacted to pcj in SpaceVenture's Backers... Where are they hiding?Let me just say this, if it weren't for Chris, you would probably not be hearing anything out of the Two Guys (relevant to SpaceVenture). It's not their fault either - they're just not promoters like Chris is. If you listened to many of the commentaries, the guys tend to ramble off-topic occasionally and Chris is the one who brings them back.
The Two Guys have full control over the game. Chris provides input, sure, but Scott and Mark have final say on everything.
Incidentally, if you want unfiltered access to Scott and Mark, they show up occasionally on Twitter - @SlashVohaul & @Wilcofever
Do you have any ideas on making the websites more navigable? I'd be happy to give that a look if you have anything in particular in mind.

There goes my plan to hand out the games to people I know based on how much I like them. "You're my oldest and dearest friend; enjoy this copy of Space Quest 3 -- on me!"
"Oh, you? Yeah, I guess you're okay. Here, take this copy of Space Quest 2 and leave me alone." ;)

s_d reacted to asdfasdf in EGA version of the SpaceVenture prototype domeThose are awesome! During the KS I started trying to make the SpaceVenture dome in AGI just for fun (was playing around with it for the first time). The vector graphics and priority system certainly take a bit of getting used to. Anyway, I only got about part of the way through it before I realised how long it would take me to do the whole thing :) Also, it can be pretty draining to motivation when you mess up a colour fill and have to try to fix up the drawing instructions without destroying everything and having to start again :)
Anyway, here's where I got up to (posted in the pledgequest thread):
I actually got a lot further a couple of times but had to start over to get the priorities right etc. :(

Thanks! Glad to hear that you enjoyed the game.
I agree completely about Akril's animation on Vohaul; it's one of my favorite things about Pledge Quest II. I especially like the part near the end when he leaps out of the

s_d got a reaction from nockgeneer in Pledge Quest II: Noodle Shop of Horrors has arrived!Way awesome, Akril!
I'm so impressed with you two (and no, you don't have to go being modest and crediting Jess, as usual! I already gave him kudos via PM, so there :P ).
Funny story; I really don't play games in front of my toddler for a number of reasons (being not even 3yrs old, we've pretty much completely eschewed violent imagery in front of her, for the time being), but I felt I was under a time crunch for Linux, and wanted to play through PQII thoroughly for testing. So, she crawls out of the beanbag chair and hops up on the couch next to me, staring intently at the game... this time I let her watch.
It was pretty funny hearing her commentary along with the game (for example, nearly every time I brought up the inventory, she'd ask "Where is the girl? Where did she go, Papa? I can't see her.", etc., ad infinium). I finally began positioning Bea to the left of the inventory before raising it, every time. She remarked about the "funny cat" because of the spoiler on his face, and how silly it was that he was spoiler on top of spoiler! At one point she asked frankly whether or not Bea was learning to pee in the toilet like a big girl, in an unexpected reflection of what is important in her little world at present. :) The biggest surprise was when I replied that Bea was going to travel spoiler spoil... and had zero questions back, as if doing so made all the sense in the world.
The crux is that PQII was her first adventure game, from beginning to end, and she loved it. Especially all the fish jokes. ;)

s_d reacted to tomimt in EGA version of the SpaceVenture prototype domeSeeing those AGI screens makes me really hope for the proto5 to gather in enough money for the Guys to make the alternative EGA graphics.

s_d reacted to Akril in Pledge Quest II: Noodle Shop of Horrors has arrived! While I do take commissions (well, technically I've only taken one so far), I'm still willing to make exceptions for members of relatively small fandoms that I'm also part of (it depends what sort of art/animation I'm being asked to make).
I try not to quit any project I get involved with without a very good reason, though I might get slowed down because of other commitments. I had a lot of stuff going on during the development of PQ2, which really dragged out the whole thing. (Pledge Quest II was 3 months in the making, but it's barely a third as large as Adventure: The Inside Job, which took me about 6 months to make.)
Speaking of art, I've got a few pieces of PQ2 concept art I need to upload once I get back to my place.
EDIT: And I'm sorry I forgot to bring it up when I first posted this message, but that story about your daughter was adorable, s_d. Thank you for sharing it. (Also, thanks to everyone who's spreading the news about the game!)
