The lead designer has popped up on Facebook and has been answering questions. He can't say much, and we won't know things for sure until we see some actual gameplay ourselves, but he has confirmed that it is "certainly not a platformer or action-oriented," is episodic, is open-world, is able to interact with the environment, "not point & click in the traditional sense but is an updated take on the formula (more details to come)". And we can expect puzzles, exploration (those two alone satisfy me), and a humour-filled wondrous story. He also said we shouldn't be concerned about linear gameplay and expects us to be pleased in that department. He says the trailer was cut more action-oriented because "adventure game mechanics are hard to show in a trailer without making the trailer seem slow for a mass audience." He also says he hopes he can go into more detail about why soon. This doesn't and has never bothered me personally, though. He goes on to say that if this game is successful, it could show the industry that people still want games where charm, storytelling, and using your mind are at the forefront. That's a winning approach in my book. Only time will tell for sure, though. He also wants to do a straight up AMA in Jan. -

Heh there's still so much we don't know. My standards are already low, so I'm left with just being intrigued at what they come up with. I might actually enjoy it. Regarding the discussion about who this is catered to, maybe it was pressure from ActiVision to rig the teaser a certain way. A teaser doesn't contain gameplay elements, though. It never did. Think back to the teasers for Arkham City. There wasn't a shred of gameplay in that. Or Aliens: Colonial Marines. In fact, they were entirely pre-rendered. At least this is running in the game engine. Granted, one of these games was a disaster and looked nothing like the actual alleged "in-game" footage that was released previously, but the other game turned out to be amazing. One thing is for sure, that video did send one message "adventure". Maybe not the game genre adventure that we're used to, but the actual definition of adventure. Journeying, discovering exotic locations, excitement, characters. -

For ActiVision? Cash-in. For The Odd Gentlemen? Acceptance. For some fans? Just getting something called "King's Quest" again. I'm interested. I hope if it is a platformer it's something a little more unique than a straight platformer with TR-like puzzles. I don't know. They've said both that it's an adventure and that it's not the game you played 20+ years ago...I don't know. -

I'm really digging the artwork in this game. Take the backdrop in this scene for instance... It's huge! And so dynamic! At least it makes the world LOOK big. -

Uh, no. By Tomb Raider-inspired, I'm referring to the original game which was neither cinematic nor QTE-laden. And I don't even think it'll be a carbon copy of that, just inspired by it. I'm thinking something like Alone in the Dark/Indy: Infernal Machine meets traditional puzzle adventure. That's my guess. Could be way off. -

Looks promising. I'm still cautious, though. I don't think it'll be traditional platformer so much as Tomb Raider-inspired. They've already said it'll be an adventure but not point & click. -

I never said we were smarter. I said we're more impatient now because current technology caters to that mindset more than it used to. We've always had the same potential we have now, it's just easier not to indulge it.

Lol re: the snake, yeah there's something you can do to him that's definitely a best-case solution. Always assume that violence isn't the best answer in King's Quest (except for Dracula, you can kill him, though he's already dead I guess). Also, it's apparently from a very obscure fairy tale or myth. You get something out of it that helps you elsewhere later on. Congrats, though! I'm trying to remember if the sword actually has a use...

Lol you don't agree? It's too easy to just look up a hint (or worse, a walkthru) online when you get the least bit stuck. At least you were forced to rough it through if you didn't want to pay for a hint book or hint line.

The root of the problem is impatience and lack of self-confidence. The internet, cell phones, etc just all cater to that too much and too easily.

Yeah, and that approach works great. I loved LA's games. Just not as much as Sierra's.

Congrats! You know, you raise some good points. The "fill" bowl, for instance. I guess it isn't obvious on first playthrough that you have to say it to magically fill it up. I take it for granted now that that was the solution. I don't even remember how I figured it out. I may not have. It may have been from my childhood days when I wasn't smart enough or too impatient to figure it out and just cheated my way through it. Even so, I still defend it. Also, regarding the flying eagle, KQ1 (and KQ2, for that matter) has hotkeys for ducking and jumping. Obviously they're meant to be used for some reason. And that moment when you figure you might just try jumping to catch the bird just to see what happens and having the bird pick you up and take you to a previously unreachable location is just a very exciting and magical moment. This was also around the time of simple platformer games where things like jumping and ducking were common, so the instinct to use them in an adventure game wasn't far fetched (especially seeing as they were documented) because KQ1 was the very first 3d graphic animated adventure game ever made. Why wouldn't you try jumping? Mindsets. The treasures in KQ1 give you points for finding them (why shouldn't they!) but they're also used for alternate solutions to puzzles in the game. For instance, you can give a treasure to the rat or the troll instead of using the appropriate item. But you get less points in the end. So there's nothing that has absolutely no purpose. This approach is also present in KQ2, by the way. Remember, these are all best case scenario puzzle solutions. You weren't expected to get full points on the first playthrough. That's why there are alternate solutions. You could argue that it's impossible to know whether you've gotten the best scenario or not, but I say the clear indicator is that you didn't finish the game with full points. It also adds to replayability. Going through the game and trying alternate solutions. The best-case solutions, however, would be more challenging by design. To the point of absurdity. It's still fair because the game isn't un-completable because you couldn't figure out some "moon logic". You can still beat the game, just without full points. At that point it isn't "what does this developer expect me to do here" it's about "how else can I go about this situation that might be a better way". Then beating the game with max points becomes all about discovering new methods to do things and then feeling personal satisfaction at having actually figured that out. As adventures went on this design philosophy and approach to playing adventures was lost. It's just a different mindset now. We HAVE to beat the game with everything or it's not fair. No, you don't HAVE to beat the game with everything. You can just beat the game and consider beating it with full points as a bonus for both replayability and personal accomplishment/bragging rights. Turning to a walkthru for such puzzles is counterproductive to this mindset. TL;DR the internet ruined adventures :P.

Actually, looking at the comb is an important clue to a puzzle right in the first chapter. You MUST look at it. :(
