Starcon Academy

The place to go to discuss anything related to the Space Quest Universe.

  1. Started by Sir Procestuous,

Josh Mandel said during the SQ6 Commentary that part of his reasoning for creating Stellar was that he found it hard to think that for all Roger's adventuring and accidental feats of heroism that he wasn't viewed as a "urban legend" of sorts. Space Quest 5 in a way DOES allude to just that with Bea asking if Roger was the same man who foiled the Sariens, and again when she snidely remarks "Isn't there a mop somewhere with your name on it?" Then again, she may just know Roger's file really well. But, that aside, and Stellar obviously, do you think there could actually be a group of galactic individuals who are familiar with the [greatly exaggerated] tales of the herois…

  2. Started by JamonBull,

I wish I could play Space Quest on my Mac or iPad. Does anyone know if or when the games will ever be released for OSX or iOS?! Would be great to see them in the App Store or on Steam. Which company currently has the rights to publish the titles on these operating systems?

  3. Most likely this has already been discussed many times over (perhaps even started by myself years ago! LOL), but what the heck! :P Let's say hypothetically at the start of Space Quest 6, we see Roger receiving a hero's welcome [For the first time since Space Quest 1!] for his deeds in Space Quest 5, and was allowed to remain in command of the Goliath, do you think it would have been better received than SQ6 was at the time? I admit this is what I was initially excited for Space Quest 6 to be; more adventures with Roger's new ship and crew. But as time (and personal experiences) went on, I came to realize that Roger needs to be a janitor to be Roger, and I nowadays…

  4. It's no secret that I played Space Quest obsessively as a kid -- and a kid with a very tenuous grasp of obvious humor at that. So it's time to air out some embarrassing laundry and hope some of you will do the same. ;) Any jokes in Space Quest that you didn't "get" until much, much later in life? For instance, it took me the longest time to get the joke in "Ulence Flats" ("flatulence"). Yeah, I know. NOW it's pretty obvious. But when I was a kid, I just thought it was a cool sounding name. Anyone else had moments of replaying the games as an adult and going, "Wow, how did I miss that?" :)

  5. The Minecraft server is finally up, along with its website! The instructions on how to access the server and all the server information is included as well. As a bonus there is a downloads section for the Ulence Flats world texture pack (which makes Ulence Flats look authentic to the original AGI game) and a collection of Roger Wilco Minecraft skin for your character avatars! More to come in the future. Email suggestions or even submit content for other ideas for downloads if you feel like it! The server at the moment has 4 worlds: The Hub - a portal hub to the different worlds, the Survival World - for standard Survival Multiplayer play (pvp disabled), The Ar…

  6. Started by Telix Zmodem,

What made Space Quest special to you? For me, it was: 1. The games were funny! As a kid, I enjoyed the humor more so than LSL, which was over my head! 2. The box art was great! It stood out at Software Etc. It was like Star Wars. 3. There was no 'Star Wars Adventure Game', so it was something that was new, but similar to what I wanted. 4. This was before 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' so it also reminded me of 'Star Trek TOS'. 5. Other games like KQ had you play as a specific character, but Roger was generic enough that I could see me as Roger. It seemed more immersive. 6. It was a game I could play with friends, especially if they hadn't seen it, I would g…

...when I realised that Karm Treebis* is an anagram of Mark Seibert's name. Not really that big or impressive a discovery, but I didn't see this mentioned on the SQ Wiki and I don't recall it ever being brought up before, so...yeah. *As in "Successful People Managing Techniques by Karm Treebis" ("Funny," the narrator says, "It's empty."), one of the disks Roger finds in Nigel and Singent's apartment.

Okay, started SQ4, but the music sucks <_< I tried my hand at Munt, the Roland emulator, but couldn't get it to work. Yes, I'm a computer iliterate. Is there an easy step by step on how to do it? I'd love to play the game with the good music I know is there. For starters, I couldn't even start the mt32emu.dll file. -_-

  10. Started by Ripper,

I always finished Space Quest 6 with 498 points. Some people said that the maximum possible points are 500. There is a points list here: http://www.spaceques.../sq6/pointlist/ But there are two mistakes: __________________________________________________ Go to the Orion's Belt and kick in the basement door - 1 I can't get this 1 point. Only this one works: Open the basement door - 3 __________________________________________________ Untangle the hookah hoses - 3 I only got 2 points for this action. __________________________________________________ The maximum possible points are 498 or 500?

  11. Started by JRock3x8,

Space Quest was not my first computer game but it was the first game I fell in love with. The last two weeks with all of the interviews and commentaries I revisited that part of my youth a little bit. I watched one of the play throughs on youtube with my 7 year old son watching over my shoulder. I was amazed at how excited he was about it considering the pretty awful graphics compared to what he is used to. So I got a copy of the game and installed it on a spare XP laptop we had (installing that game on modern machines is quite an adventure in its own right, thank you whoever built those modern installers...). I soon realized that this wasn't just entertainment…

  12. Hey folks, Cool new fix from NewRisingSun, the man behind the timer fixes. From the man himself: In plain English, you get stereo sound instead of mono for Adlib/Sound Blaster, and if you have General MIDI you get upgraded sound by way of less note dropouts and that one intro sound effect, and if you have a General MIDI Roland device, you get GS drumkits too, like 'Orchestra' and 'Jazz'! Get it while it's hot at: http://www.sierramusiccentral.com/assorted/sq5NRS.zip

  13. Started by Troels Pleimert,

Hi, guys. Long time no see. I don't check in here too often, although really I should. But since I basically checked out of the SQ community ten years ago things have changed considerably. Being a Roger Wilco fan is fun again, with the massive amounts of love showing in the fan efforts of VSB, SQInc and Infamous' SQ2VGA. Plus, not to mention, the fact that the original series is doing quite well on GOG.com. So there's that. And I was getting into a groove of playing the old series anyway, having by chance picked up SQ1VGA from the dust bin in my basement somewhere and giving it a whirl for the hell of it. It's a fun feeling knowing you can save a galaxy before…

Hiaya! I was just wondering if it's possible to end up in an unwinnable state in SQ 4, 5 or 6?

  15. Here's an episode of the Computer Chronicles from 1992 that features a mini-review of Space Quest IV. The whole show is rather interesting, but too bad SQIV got so little air-time, and that audio is only on the left! And did you know? In Windows 3.1, if a program crashes, it can be removed separately and not take down the whole system like in 3.0. Thanks, Paul Schindler, for giving me a funny Win 3.1 BSOD to view. http://archive.org/details/episode_946

... does anyone have them available for download somewhere? (I'd rather not extract the youtube versions, as the videos are so old and quality is already pretty poor - that the "reduced" versions of Youtube are typically much worse!)

Ruined!!! VIOLATED!!! I have to relate a terrible story. With this new SpaceVenture in the works I decided to check up on my ol' Space Quest boxes. A number of years ago, I decided to move them -- and some other items -- into storage. I'm not really a "collector" of anything really, but for some reason I wanted to keep those boxes around but just had no place for them. Well -- *sniff* -- I decided to check up on them last weekend and... it seems a pipe burst... and, like a laser it fired right into my SQ Boxes...DESTROYED NOTHING ELSE! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR6KjNmN2BA My question to you folks, should I go on ebay and restock t…

  20. One of the crimes Roger is convicted of by the enigmatic Admiral Toolman in the SQ6 intro is "Perpetrating a sequel without authorization". Maybe I'm just a little slow, but I never really "got" that line. I'm pretty certain the sequel in question is SQ5, but that line still doesn't make sense to me. It sort of has a "Hey, we haven't blatantly broken the fourth wall in this series for a while -- why don't we do it right here, in the intro?" kind of vibe to it. On the overanalytical side, I feel like I might be overlooking some sort of deeper context the game's writers were hinting at (i.e., the way SQ5 is more or less swept under the rug in SQ6: barely any mention…

  21. You got it wrong. Starcon does not know the identity of this entity that dumps toxic waste on planets, so they coined the term "Sludge Bandits" to describe that mysterious entity, which happen to be Quirk. Genetix had a warehouse of useless goop and bribed Quirk to get rid of it. There is no mysterious organization dumping waste on planets, it was Quirk all along. And before you mention it, that brown alien in the intercepted transmission is no bandit, he works for Genetix, try visiting it at the start of the game (the coordinate are always the same.) Or they beamed on their ship and left. Never to be seen again. The Goliath was attacked by the mutat…

I am attempting to run SQ4 from my old SQ Collection with one of the installers found on sierrahelp. I have also applied the patch found here: http://www.spacequest.net/archives/downloads/mpc12.zip which contains timer fixes and other mods that I am sure you are familiar with. This is the 1994 Collectors Edition. The game appears to be just fine without the patch. Once I apply the patch I receive an error. The error that I receive is at startup: "Ooops! You did something that we weren't expecting ... Error 4. SCI Version 1.001.064. " I am tempted to try ScummVM as it appears to have better sound right out of the box but DosBox has always worked for w…
